Very senior manager was told off by HR for doing a mocking Chinese accent when talking about a trip to a Chinese restaurant in a senior meeting.
She then recounts story with same accent in different meeting as well as how funny it was HR told her off for it.

It Bothers me. But am I the only one?

I'm from Liverpool and have heard my accent mocked on TV many times, remember Harry Enfield and "the Scousers". Why is it racist to mock foreign languages, but not British ones?

zzzzz, it still pisses me off though when people say "calm down, calm down" in a put on Liverpool accent. It's not funny.

I imagine she's absolutely hilarious hmm Why do you encourage this?

@derxa - because she genuinely likes a Scottish accent (as do I and thousands of other people) and wants to sound the same. She's not trying to be derogatory - she's full of admiration for it. Does that make her a racist?

"is X racist?"

"No, because Y isn't"

Of course it is racist. Some people think it is ok to say slitty eyes to me or let's get some chinkies because their family and friends have always used the words. Well maybe you come from an ignorant, uneducated background then! And yes I find it bloody hilarious Hmm

I think it's racist because it mocks a specific race of people.

My mother (she's no longer alive, but the story still counts) used to work for Chinese people and whenever she recounted a conversation with her boss, she'd do a sort of Chinese accent for his part (missing out pronouns, etc also). I eventually told her I found it embarrassing and racist, but it was a very difficult conversation to have.
