To think 21 bananas a week is crazy?!

RomeoBunny · 21/05/2018 10:07

I just counted. We went through 21 bananas in 7 days. I know it's only 1 each a day (3 of us) but looking at it for the week, it just seems crazy. That's £25 a month on bananas alone!

Husband thinks I'm nuts.

I think we need to eat more tangerines Blush

We're very similar! I don't eat one a day but my husband and son do.
We also go through a rididculous amount of apples and oranges.

AnnieOH1 · 21/05/2018 10:15

Provided your budget allows it I don't see an issue. They're healthy, 1 or 2 of your daily allowance (depending on which you subscribe to and size of the fruit) and quite cheap - 15p each max iirc.

Birdsgottafly · 21/05/2018 10:16

If you can afford them, then that's fine. Other fruit don't give what Bananas do.

I eat fruit because I like sweet things, if I had less money, though (I get PIP), I'd have to eat food with refined sugar in.

I wish Jamie would focus on making foods cheaper, as well as putting tax on food.

Rocinante1 · 21/05/2018 10:16

Don't worry (unless you're needing to cut back on grocery shopping).
We go through 21 bananas and 42 eggs just for breakfast (2 scrambled eggs and 1 banana each) along with toast. More if anyone wants a banana for snack or eggs needed for cooking etc.

user1499173618 · 21/05/2018 10:17

Ideally you should be varying your food intake as much as possible. A banana per person every single day is probably not varied enough.

BarbaraofSevillle · 21/05/2018 10:17

Buy cheaper bananas. I almost never buy bananas because I hate them, but DP likes them every once in a while and I'm always astonished about how cheap they are (normal supermarket bananas, which seem to cost about 10-12 pence each so your monthly banana habit should cost about a tenner).

Or you could just give them up entirely because half of Mumsnet seems to think that they are Very Unhealthy and to blame for the obesity crisis.

Hideandgo · 21/05/2018 10:21

Are you eating gold encrusted bananas? YABU!

Huge bananas are 14p each in Tesco. So £12/month at your current rate. In any case 20p for a healthy filling snack or food is a bargain!

VerbenaBoriensis · 21/05/2018 10:21

Smaller bananas OP? We get through them too. Only wish DC would eat them.

flamingofridays · 21/05/2018 10:22

we go through about the same!

I also find it crazy and have never added up how much it costs but we could be eating worse snacks so I am not too bothered!

Aprilmightbemynewname · 21/05/2018 10:23

My ds16 alone eats 28 a week.
And I have 6 x dc.
Only 1 won't eat them and the rest aren't boxing nuts!!
Maybe need a banana farm!!

StubbleTurnips · 21/05/2018 10:25

Roc glad you said about eggs, we go through 2 dozen a week and I think that's mad. Don't get me started on milk.... 36pints of semi skimmed and 10pints of whole Mille every bloody week. And even then we run out. There's 2 adults, 1 child and a toddler.
Might as well buy a cow.

Ninchninch · 21/05/2018 10:30

We go through an awful lot of fruit and milk.
4 pints of milk a day!
20 bananas a week
20 oranges
10 apples
6 kiwis
1 punnet of grapes
3 punnets of strawberries
3 punnets of raspberries
2 punnets of blueberries
24 eggs
1 loaf of bread a day!
We're healthy and happy!

ConciseandNice · 21/05/2018 10:31

When we had all our kids with us (5) we got through 9 a day on average. Now it’s only that per week!

Rocinante1 · 21/05/2018 10:34

@Ninchninch

Replace kiwi with figs, and some more eggs, and we're the same as you!
I'm so glad other people use the same!

soupforbrains · 21/05/2018 10:43

I once did a diet where I ate 3 bananas a day so that was 21/week just for me. bananas are incredibly cheap and are an excellent source of fibre and potassium so I'm not sure what your issue is?

PinkHeart5914 · 21/05/2018 10:43

Bananas are one of the cheapest fruits you can buy and No I don’t think 1 banana each a day is excessive tbh.

Are you suddenly on a really tight budget or something? If not I’m not sure what the problem is as food is for eating right?

BlueJava · 21/05/2018 10:51

That's good (provided it's in budget). I wish I could get my 2 DS to eat any fruit!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 21/05/2018 10:54

46 pints of milk a week? Wow

PearPeachCrumble · 21/05/2018 11:22

My kids from the ages of 2-5 easily used to eat a bunch a day, 4-5 each. Since 5 they calmed down quite a lot and now eat about 5 a week each and have done for a good few years.

Babyroobs · 21/05/2018 11:25

There are a lot of health benefits to eating ripe bananas, so I don't see the problem if you can afford them. We go through a lot ( family of 6), the kids eat them on Weetabix, on toast with peanut butter etc as well as just by themselves !

Lukeandlorelai4Ever · 21/05/2018 11:30

We are the same! We get through about 18 a week between 2 adults and one child,
Also 3 punnets strawberries
3 punnets blueberries
1 punnets grapes
1 melon
Bag of apples
Bag of oranges
1 mango

That's mainly my daughter, I'm more of a vegetable person!

murphys · 21/05/2018 11:33

Wait! What!

25 pounds for 21 bananas?

Is that really right? Or do you shop somewhere really posh.

not in UK but I just cannot get past that bit

CamHowe · 21/05/2018 11:34

I thought from the thread title this would be for just one person lol. That would have been ridicolous! No a banana a day isn't crazy. Maybe unusual and very committed though haha.

murphys · 21/05/2018 11:35

Ah per week.

have calmed down now Grin

Carboholic · 21/05/2018 11:36

My toddler almost eats that amount all on his own.
