To ask when you gave your little ones their first taste of solids

I'm a little confused by advice I was given from the health visitor. She says not to introduce solids of any sort until 6mo

However clearly there are jars of baby food readily available in all shops which say from 4 months.

I have on occasion given a small amount of baby rice and also rusk crushed up and mixed in with milk formula. Baby loved it no problems and is 4 and a half months old.

When did you first introduced yours to solids of any sort?

DD loves a Rusk now and again, sitting her in the highchair with one keeps her happy while I'm cleaning the kitchen.

trixymalixy · 20/05/2018 22:59

6 months for both.

reluctantbrit · 20/05/2018 23:05

We did BLW and for that the baby is supposed to sit upright and can grab food itself.

DD was 5.5 months but it took until she was 9 months for her to eat a meal compared to nibbling.

At 4 months you are restricted to fruit and veg. No gluten, no dairy, no meat. You can obviously mix with formula or breastmilk but not with cows milk. Pretty pointless as these foods do not provide any calories.

Mousefunky · 20/05/2018 23:09

6 months but DC3 didn’t eat many solids at all till she was one, she liked breastmilk too much.

I was given rusks in my bottle at 2 months Hmm. The advice has changed A LOT over the years.

Bearfrills · 20/05/2018 23:10

Yeah. No calories at all in avocado, apples, squash, sweet potatoes, banana, carrots, lentils, peas, parsnip, blueberries, etc. None at all.

NellMangel · 20/05/2018 23:15

Six months to the day! I'm a rule follower 😁

MollyDaydream · 20/05/2018 23:16

There's also evidence that introducing gluten, dairy (formula is dairy btw), eggs, nuts, fish between 4 and 6 months reduces the risk of allergies.

BertieBotts · 20/05/2018 23:21

They don't advise to avoid anything prior to 6m any more, just the normal stuff you need to avoid prior to 12 months - honey and too much salt. And then anything in terms of choking hazards also.

BertieBotts · 20/05/2018 23:22

This is worth a share.

There's also a link on there which debunks the whole "schedule" of what to introduce first, second, third, etc. This was relevant when babies were routinely being weaned before 17 weeks as it was important to avoid anything too aggravating to begin with but after 17 weeks and certainly by 26 weeks this is not a problem.

spookytime · 20/05/2018 23:30

DC 6 months on the dot.

However I was weaned early, mother can’t remember when Hmm but bragged about it at all he time and to me later. I have UC and have suffered digestive problems all my life. Related? No idea but in the forums am on which deals with IBS, Crohns, UC etc. many of us were weaned too early by today’s guidelines.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 20/05/2018 23:37

Gave DD her first taste of purée at 5.5 months but she wasn't ready for it so delayed until just after 6 months. I was the last one out of my antenatal group to start weaning, I'm not sure why so many parents these days seem to be in such a rush to start.

I presume some baby food products state 4 months as refluxy babies for example are sometimes weaned slightly earlier.

banannabreadforme · 20/05/2018 23:38

5 months when she grabbed a chunk of banana off my mum. We were all stunned 😂

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 20/05/2018 23:42

DD started with baby rice at 16 weeks back in 1996. I think DGS started a bit later with Aptamil porridge, and at nearly nine months will eat most baby food along with fruit purée, yogurt and the odd bit of chicken. Fearsome appetite, but then he never stops moving.

Sausagema · 20/05/2018 23:57

23 weeks, BLW. Read all this stuff about them not eating anything significant for weeks... found evidence Dd had indeed eaten some veg the next day in her nappy. she was more than ready and took to it like a duck to water- to the point we were at a bbq a few days after starting solids and she was on my knee, latched on to my pork chop Grin. I was actually a bit disturbed how much she likes food! She's just a foodie though, food is life. Don't think that has anything to do with BLW though, I just thibk that's how she is.

Kokeshi123 · 21/05/2018 00:19

I started at 4.5 months.

I looked at the research and it seemed like giving iron-rich foods and allergens before six months slightly reduced the risk of iron deficiency and allergies.

I doubt the differences between starting at 4.5 mo and 6 mo are exactly large, mind you.

llangennith · 21/05/2018 00:45

4 months, 3 months, 6 months with my three. Mashed banana or other fruit purees. Never baby rice: have you tasted it?😝

Crabbitstick · 21/05/2018 21:45

I think Bearfrills calorie comment refers to fact that very little food is initially digested to the extent that nutritional value is absorbed - mainly it passes through!

funmummy48 · 21/05/2018 21:51

3 months with my first as per the guidelines at the time. By the time my second arrived, the advice had changed to 6 months but I stuck to the original 3 month guideline as that had always been the "norm" until then.

TomFun · 21/05/2018 21:52

6 months. There’s really no need to start earlier, unless advised for medical reasons.

Liz38 · 21/05/2018 22:03

6 months with DD and did BLW so she needed to be sat up safely and securely and able to direct food roughly in the direction of her mouth herself. Hit and miss would be a fair description Grin

Fatalcupcake · 24/03/2020 11:52

I have a 6 month old who is not interested in putting stuff into his mouth. He s supposed to be starting solids and we’re trying blw method with not much success! He just plays with it! Anyone that has gone through this fase successfully?
