To ask when you gave your little ones their first taste of solids

I'm a little confused by advice I was given from the health visitor. She says not to introduce solids of any sort until 6mo

However clearly there are jars of baby food readily available in all shops which say from 4 months.

I have on occasion given a small amount of baby rice and also rusk crushed up and mixed in with milk formula. Baby loved it no problems and is 4 and a half months old.

When did you first introduced yours to solids of any sort?

DC1 - 15 wks
DC2 - 29 wks
DC3 - 22 wks
DC4 - 26 wks

All based on when that particular child wanted/needed to start solids. They all started off on fruit/vegetable mush and then had finger foods introduced alongside.

Risks and baby rice have little to no nutritional value. It’s worth waiting until baby is interested in proper food IMO.

Amanduh · 20/05/2018 17:41

OP, baby rusks and bits and pieces are fine. It used to be 4mo now it’s 6. Gave my ds his first taste a year ago at 6mo but he wasn’t interested at all. Started weaning then but he didn’t really eat until about a year

DonkeyPunch88 · 20/05/2018 17:43

4 months with all of mine

Coldilox · 20/05/2018 17:44

6 months, didn't do purées or jars, straight onto real food, BLW style. Think his first food was a bit of toast he nabbed off my plate the day before he was six months!

milkysmum · 20/05/2018 17:45

Did baby led weaning from 6 months with both of mine. No need for purees ( much less faffing!)

redastherose · 20/05/2018 17:45

My Eldest DD is 24, 3 months was usual then! By the time I'd had Dd2 it was 4 months. As I gas to go back to work FT at 12 weeks with the eldest I don't know how we would have coped if she hadn't been able to have solids as she was ebf and hated taking any milk from the bottle.

MagicFajita · 20/05/2018 17:47

4 months , 4 months and 6 months.

The first two are much older than my third.

TeddyIsaHe · 20/05/2018 17:48

If you want to wean, fine but please do some research on nutrition before start filling your baby with crap like rusks and baby rice.

Real, fresh, homemade food. Vegetables, fruit, meat, cheese etc etc. Baby rice and rusks are devoid of any nutritional value, and rusks have more sugar in them than a custard cream. Just because its marketed for babies doesn’t mean it’s good for them!

Elledouble · 20/05/2018 17:54

5 months. Under paediatrician’s advice because he wasn’t gaining weight.

Foreverthinking · 20/05/2018 17:56

I've only given Rusk (mixed with formula) in a bowl and spoon fed, same with the rice. I'm not looking to start weaning properly yet regardless and will stick to the rec 6 months from now on. Just interested in how it was for others :)

Please don't crush food and put in bottles. It is dangerous. Babies don't need solids until 6 months.

Crabbitstick · 20/05/2018 18:04

Sorry, cross post.

AmazingGrace16 · 20/05/2018 18:05

6 months. first food was a strip of beef steak from bourginon which he chewed down on quite happily :)

EssentialHummus · 20/05/2018 18:08

5.5 months, bit of banana.

CatLadyToddlerMother · 20/05/2018 18:11

She was licking off my fingers and spoons from 5 months, didn't start giving her the jars or anything until 6 months.

Lauren83 · 20/05/2018 18:17

4 months, he has baby porridge and rice and fruit and veg purée, only in small amounts between bottles

Bearhunter09 · 20/05/2018 18:18

4 months because DS kept pulling himself towards food. He’s always been a great eater. Guidelines are just that -a guide trust your instincts

cadburyegg · 20/05/2018 18:21

6 months, unless it’s advised for medical reasons I don’t know why anyone introduces solids earlier, weaning is such a faff and messy Grin

UrgentScurryfunge · 20/05/2018 18:28

I had rusks in my bottle and weaned from 3 months and I'm fine despite the IBS and intolerances Wink Grin

I gave mine chunks of food such as banana to play with at about 5 months. They both wanted to wean at 23 weeks... stealing our food and shoving it in like lightning, copying eating and getting distressed at being left out. I was aiming for 6 months, but they made it very clear that they were ready to start eating their way through the cupboards... not ideal in your first week living in a new house!

BlueTrousers · 20/05/2018 18:33

6 months
6 months
4 months - as recommended by a paediatrician (he has allergies and had severe reflux and we were struggling)

However none of them have ever had baby rice or rusk - they’re utter shit, if you want to give your baby solids at least give him real food

GrandTheftWalrus · 20/05/2018 18:37

A couple of days shy of 6 months. Did a mixture of jars and blw. Fully blw by about 10 months. Now she eats everything in sight!

NapQueen · 20/05/2018 18:38

At some point between 5.5 and 6.5 months for both of them. Dhs family has a history or crohns and UC (with his wonderful sister suffering so badly from both she passed away at 27). I was taking no chances. There is every possibility the dc will develop either of these regardless but at least i know early weaning on my part wasnt the cause.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 20/05/2018 18:43

6 months. TBH DS wasn't actually interested at that age - he only really got into it at about 9 months.

sunnydaynoworking · 20/05/2018 18:46

How can you possibly know whether your baby would have had “no problems” from the food you gave? I mean it seems unlikely, but unless you have both a scanner and a crystal ball you can’t possibly say that!
