Royal wedding: disappointed at all the nasty MN threads

TwitterQueen1 · 20/05/2018 07:55

I saw two 'positive' threads - one on Camilla, one on Charles. All the others (that I saw) were pretty spiteful and unpleasant, alleging or implying:

  • Kate tried to upstage Meghan by wearing cream (which was actually lemon)
  • Several royals were 'unable' to look at the happy couple whilst they were saying their vows
  • Kate really wanted to marry Harry herself
  • Elton looked very rough and his wig was awful
  • Victoria B is miserable and po-faced
  • David B - 'nuff said
  • Harry's outfit looked like PJs and he should have shaved
  • Meghan was afraid of being upstaged by adult bridesmaids to chose to have only flower girls
  • Meghan's dress didn't fit well
  • Meghan is going to get restless in a few years and flit
  • apparently there's a lot of 'hate' for Meghan
  • all the guests, including Harry, would be guilty of drink driving after the reception

At the risk of sounding like Pollyanna, and regardless of whether you're a royalist, republican, communist, whatever, I think it's a shame that people looked for the negative and nasty on a day of celebration.

Can we have some positives? Here's mine: William looked relaxed and confident and was obviously a huge support to a very nervous Harry.

the endless mouth-frothing utter obsessive rage some posters have engaged in? No one is complaining about debate or criticism or opinion, just the endless agenda-pushing.

The only frothing i have see is from people like you who do not accept anyone having a different POV

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 20/05/2018 14:41

And who funds the royal family?

Yup. Us.

Confused How do we do that, then? I mean, I know that the British tax payer funds some aspects of costs connected to the monarchy, but I don't get how we are providing the income that they get from the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall, or from the Queen's private investment portfolio, or how we fund the revenue they get from the property they own, or how we fund the Crown Estate.

I don't know a lot about Economics, as you can see, so any explanation of how we fund everything for them would be welcome.

Bourdic · 20/05/2018 14:46

I thought the pastors sermon was utter garbled inane rubbish - who amongst all those gathered in the church gives a real shit about ending poverty or children going to bed hungry? Many of them contribute to these problems in effect by the values they live by and are representative of our obscene celebrity obsessed culture . As for quoting MLK - well the few words he did quote could have been said by anyone. As for the pout on a stick and tattoo man, inter alia, words fail me.The whole event for me demonstrated absolutely everything that is wrong with British society.

Lorddenning1 · 20/05/2018 14:54

@madeyemoodysmum haha that horse made me laugh :)

GoldenWonderwall · 20/05/2018 14:56

There’s a discussion to be had about republicanism, money spent, media circuses etc etc. That’s nowt to do with what her dress looked like, her dysfunctional family, what Diana would do, how her and Kate are in competition etc bloody etc which is what most of the fish wives are harping on about. There’s reasonable criticism and there’s being a big salty meanie and it’s fairly obvious what the
difference is.

Carycach100 · 20/05/2018 14:58

The Duchy of Lancaster was originally a crown asset until the middle ages when the ruling monach decided it would become a private asset. I would imagine few of the royal families personal wealth accrued to them through their own or their ancestors hard work.I would imagine mostly landgrab over the centuries and feudalism

ArtBrut · 20/05/2018 15:06

I think you will find any bitterness towards the event is more likely to stem from the tastelessness of a massive display of immense wealth and privilege at great cost to the tax payer at a time when schools and NHS budgets have been slashed, rather than 'jealousy;

This. And I must say that what strikes me about many of the Mn threads is not 'nastiness' but how low the bar apparently is for royal behaviour to be praised to the skies.

Several people said on other threads that Harry and William walking to the chapel together, and Charles displaying basic good manners to Doria Ragland, had made them cry. Hmm Seriously?

derxa · 20/05/2018 15:09

I had the misfortune to hear Polly Toynbee going on about how awful the RF are this morning. They're dim and uncultured and never go to art galleries or the theatre. Presumably Polly would be a much better head of state. If you want a hypocritical champagne socialist that is. For me the Royals add to the gaiety of the nation. I'm not a sycophant - most Scots aren't.
Sod off Polly you cliche ridden bore.

Roussette · 20/05/2018 15:34

TSSDNCOP I loved your thread yesterday until it came to an abrupt end because it was full ! I started a Part 2 thread but it didn't really get off the ground and then I went off to our street party which went on till midnight!

It would've been nice to have just one day without the nastiness, just one, not a lot to ask but elsewhere there were horrible rants about parasites, vacuous, forelock tugging and all that bollocks so I just joined the thread above and enjoyed talking nice things.

Mabeldidit · 20/05/2018 15:41

'I'm unsure why so much hate for the Bishop. I can see why people say he spoke for a long time (and the odd Fire section!) but so many comments about it being inappropriate'
Because not only did he go on far too long he kept repeating himself. Fire and love. Yes we heard you the first fifty times.

madeyemoodysmum · 20/05/2018 16:05

•Prince Harry
• Volunteered for 2 tours of Afghanistan.
•Set up Invictus games helping wounded service personal.
° Numerous unpaid charity volunteer appointments all over the world.
•Family brings in 400 million a year in private revenue that under the “ sovereign act 2011” the government keeps £360 million of.
•Family brings in £1.8 billion per year in tourism.
•Country better off by £2.1 billion a year.
Remind me how the wedding is waste of tax payers money ?
° The wedding is paid for by the Royal heritage and private funding not the tax payer and that includes her dress!
° The tax payer will pay for the public security not private security. The same way the tax payer pays for public security at football matches etc.

Dont be a zombie and believe everything you see and read on the Internet, do a little research before sharing propaganda. Like it or not, the Royal family is a British tradition and icon.
Let’s not forget that most the twats complain about spending tax payers money are the ones who sit and sign for that money every Wednesday or daft liberals who haven't got a clue about reality👌🏼💰

Copied and edited from a friend

TSSDNCOP · 20/05/2018 16:10

Hey Rousette it was lovely wasn’t it. I stopped posting as guests arrived and I kept bursting into tears.

Honeyroar · 20/05/2018 16:28

There were some silly threads (the one about Kate wanting to marryHarry being the worst!) but they initial stupid posts were mostly followed with lots of posters disagreeing. A lot of people disagreed that VB is miserable too. They were just discussions.. We're not robots who blanket adore everything - there were things I liked, things I didn't. That's life. They had people camped out in the streets to see them, who adore them wherever they go, I'm sure they can cope with a bit of negativity on Mumsnet! Overall it was a lovely day and a spectacular wedding. I'm in California for the weekend, America has been gushing about it. It's all good. We amazed the world again with our pomp and ceremony. It really doesn't matter if a few people grumbled about things. We're British, that's another thing we're good at.

karmacoma1 · 20/05/2018 16:30

I would love to see the proof that the country is ‘better off by 2.1 billion a year’ thanks to the royals.

There needs to be a sensible, respectful discussion about the possibility of a republic because like it or not, there are a lot of people who don’t see the monarchy as relevant in a modern forward thinking country.

Carycach100 · 20/05/2018 16:37

The detail about who paid for what is not in the public domain, as far as i can find.
Those figures you have quoted are rubbish.Firstly the income 'the family brings in' as you put it, is from crown estates which do not belong to the queen personally, they come with the position like a tied house. The queen will be getting £82.2million from that this year not £40m

Fireinthehold · 20/05/2018 17:25

I agree that the rider with the "frisky" grey white horse did a grand horse. I kept thinking he's going to bolt.

I don't mind the Royal Family, and I enjoyed the spectacle of this royal wedding. I think the younger royals ie Kate, Wills, Harry and Meghan are more aware of their responsibilities and the need to be sensitive of public opinion. They take their charitable and ambassador roles much more seriously. I was impressed that Kate wears her clothes more than once and that Meghan paid for her own dress. Also I don't particular want a President and a first family, I'd rather stick with what we have!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 20/05/2018 17:27

Derxa I heard her too, she sounded like a right snob. Apparently the Queen reads Dick Francis, shock horror!

auditqueen · 20/05/2018 17:29

So someone who had to cut and paste a quote from a friend is calling others zombies. Righto.

So Harry joined the army and went to Afghanistan. Whoopee. So have a lot of our servicemen and women and some of them are on the streets now not living in a castle. Those are the ones I have respect for. Oh and the people who have managed to work for more than a couple of years.

I work full time and pay my taxes, thank you very much. Whilst my politics can be described as left wing, I'm more of a champagne socialist than Morning Star reader.

Republicans come in all shapes and sizes, all backgrounds and all political beliefs. I could stereotype royalists as brainless sheep who believe the crap they read in the media - but thst would be rude, wouldn't it.

traciebanbanjo · 20/05/2018 20:00

You look like the zombie posting figures that are very optermistic guess work at how much tourism they generate and how much better off the country is.

France doesn't struggle for tourism to their palaces and they are in public ownership to benefit it's citizens.

marchin1984 · 20/05/2018 21:12

but I don't get how we are providing the income that they get from the Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall

for a start, as far as I know, the taxes that are paid on the Duchy of Cornwall by Charles is voluntary.

I'd also like some clarity. Why do they get anything from the Duchies? And can we stop it?

marchin1984 · 20/05/2018 21:14

I don't mind the Royal Family, and I enjoyed the spectacle of this royal wedding. I think the younger royals ie Kate, Wills, Harry and Meghan are more aware of their responsibilities and the need to be sensitive of public opinion.

If we are in to dumping money down a hole for a spectacle we should host the olympics again.

LollyLollington · 20/05/2018 21:22

I've said this on other threads and will repeat here: a 14 minute sermon is NOT too long (it's actually on the short side!) and the content of the speech was perfectly appropriate for a Christian wedding. Which is presumably what the couple wanted given they got married in a church. Most people feeling it was inappropriate/irrelevant have clearly not been to a church service in a looong time!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/05/2018 21:30

But he did repeat himself. A lot.

LollyLollington · 20/05/2018 21:31

I had a lecturer at uni who always said everything twice-twice. But I always remembered her lectures! Grin Anyway I LOVED the wedding! Lovely day - even though I'd describe myself as an armchair republican. As in, if you were designing a system from scratch you wouldn't choose this. But, it's done and better than the alternative. Plus DD is in this awful loving all princesses phase. Which I don't normally encourage but as a mixed race person I enjoyed her playing at being Meghan yesterday as opposed to Elsa, Rapunzel, Ariel etc Smile
