To feel extremely bloody proud to be British today?

I take our country for granted because I live in a town that is the polar opposite of what Windsor looks like. But wow - watching the Royal family today I got shivers down my spine and felt so overwhelmed with emotion.

In the past I've looked at ways of emigrating because I've been fed up of living here, but I've just realised that it's a free country and to feel better about life I can actually make the move and go and live somewhere nicer (ok, maybe not Windsor but still).

We're so lucky aren't we?

I didn't suggest anyone should keep quiet biscuit. Lively debate and free speech is another good thing about Britain Smile

The cost of the wedding has been pointed out. But has anyone mentioned the couple's decision to suggest charity donations instead of gifts?

my friend did the exact same thing a couple of years ago. They suggested donations instead of gifts. We picked one we thought they would like. And while they are not poor, they are not wealthy by any stretch. Also, they make their own money by working, not getting a massive payout from the state.

I am not sure suggesting charities makes you a saint. It's certailnly better than being grabby, but with their wealth my guess is they can have whatever they want.

Jeanvaljean27 · 21/05/2018 00:02

Panem et circenses.

InkSnail · 21/05/2018 00:32

I know it isn't unique to suggest donations not gifts, and fundraising can be done at any time. but the amounts on this occasion must be substantial. The £30m wedding was pricey of course but only comes to about 50p per person in the UK. If huge sums are now with charities as a result that's a good thing.

Puffycat · 21/05/2018 00:40

Say what you will NOBODY does pomp and pageantry like the Windsor’s!
Class wedding, beautiful bride, was choked!

marchin1984 · 21/05/2018 00:44

If huge sums are now with charities as a result that's a good thing.

Hopefully it's more than 30 million. Afterall, if not, we could have just given it to charity ourselves.

MissConductUS · 21/05/2018 00:51

You should be proud. Britain shone this weekend and is a free and democratic society. We are proud to be your cousins across the pond.

SleightOfMind · 21/05/2018 00:57

We’re leaving England in two years time and I do have a new appreciation for how stunning the change of seasons is here.

A scant few weeks ago there were bare branches and we were all trudging about in the mud.

Suddenly it’s so green and lush. It’s a very pretty place to live. I‘m really going to miss the weather Sad

MrsFondacox · 21/05/2018 07:05

MightyMucks no I’m afraid you’re wrong, especially if you think the Romans etc didn’t rape and pillage and some general all round shagging. Also, you’d better sit down for this one, when Kings first started ruling, we were a French nation, check out the Plantagenets, try Google it’s your friend Smile

expatinscotland · 21/05/2018 07:55

'You should be proud. Britain shone this weekend and is a free and democratic society. We are proud to be your cousins across the pond.'

Speak for yourself. You certainly do not speak for all Americans, the vast majority of whom don't give a flying fuck about royals and many more are proud to be our own nation, not a cousin or satellite to a country a war was fought over to get independence from. What a disgusting comment!

MightyMucks · 21/05/2018 08:08

You look an absolute idiot, questioning somebody else’s intelligence and knowledge when you’re the one who is talking absolute bullshit. I actually feel embarrassed for you.

At the very peak of numbers there were only 16,500 legionnaires here because in normal circumstances they would rule through local elites so needed minimum soldiers.

There was nowhere near enough o them to makes a significant change in local population.

It also makes you look a bit silly telling someone else to google when you sound like your history from an 80s school book.

Meadowland · 21/05/2018 08:08

Agree with marchin.
I meet many people from overseas in my work and far from them thinking "wow, aren't they lucky to have a RF", the vast majority think we are living in the past and wasting obscene amounts of money which could be used for much more deserving causes.
And yes France gets way more tourists than us without the need for an outdated RF.
So the economic argument really does fall flat on it's face.
With this and Brexit,I believe we are fast becoming a laughing stock.
If it wasn't so tragic, I would probably find it funny too.

Slartybartfast · 21/05/2018 08:10

Agree with OP
God save the Queen

siwel123 · 21/05/2018 08:11

More like God save the county if you're proud to British?
Why would you want to save one person?

MrsDilber · 21/05/2018 08:13

I agree with you op. I have to drive up and down the country regularly, and it is so beautiful, especially at this time of year.

I love looking at our old churches, historic buildings (all of which we would never have had if it wasn't for an aristocracy), which are now open to the public.

Windsor looked amazing, the castle was stunning and 2 billion people saw that.

You are right, we are lucky. There are some real crap places to be born in this world, this isn't one of them.

Slartybartfast · 21/05/2018 08:22

Alright expat, you can laud and applaud Donald Trump!

MightyMucks · 21/05/2018 08:23

when Kings first started ruling, we were a French nation, check out the Plantagenets, try Google it’s your frien

‘Kings didn’t ‘’start’ with the Plantagenets. They’re

MrsFondacox · 21/05/2018 08:28

MightMucks, calling someone names isn't going to change the facts. Our population was literally thousands in 827AD when Egbert, Englands first King came to the throne, as opposed to millions upon millions it is now. I wasn't being funny when I said Google it, you'll learn a lot. Many that live in York (or Jorvik as the Vikings interpreted it from Eoforwic, the Anglo-Saxon name) are Viking descendants and York is in England so how do you explain that little titbit then? Off to work now so y'all have a good one.

MrsFondacox · 21/05/2018 08:35

Oh MightMucks before I go, I didn't meant a Plantagenet King first started ruling, I meant that the Plantagenets and the French made their home here, so to sit down because we also have people of French descent in Britain too. Hope it wasn't too much of a shock for you, bye!

pigsDOfly · 21/05/2018 08:36

Goodness Ismyusernamerubbish. What a lot of vitriol.

Unlike you I didn't call you names, and hurl insults at you. Nor did I call you a racist. I said the expression you used sounded racist, and so it does.

Still, it's a first for me, I've never been called a twat before.

Have a nice day.

kalapattar · 21/05/2018 08:41

God save the Queen

Well, that's a whole different debate there...Grin

expatinscotland · 21/05/2018 08:48

'Alright expat, you can laud and applaud Donald Trump!'

I don't, what an odd conclusion to make, that if a person isn't a supporter of monarchy, he/she is by default a Trump-supporter. Yeah, that's a logical sequitur . . . . not Hmm.

derxa · 21/05/2018 08:55

The same reason they clamour round Trump, anything to sell a story. I think the rest of the world just think we're a bit of an oddity, having a "royal family", like an old relic from a bygone era, they love to spectate but are grateful they have nothing like it themselves.
Well done shoehorning Trump in there. Grin

IsMyUserNameRubbish · 21/05/2018 08:58

@pigsDofly. It's people like you with all your "insinuating" that cause problems in this world, and my comment wasn't "vitriol" it was justified in reply to you saying my comment was "chilling" Stephen King novels are "chilling" ice is "chilling" my comments (in reply to someone else's by the way if you could've been arsed to read back) was most definitely not chilling, even less so if you'd have put it in to context.

You do like to use "still" as you ending comment a lot don't you? Still, I'm surprised this is the first time you've ever been called a twat and judging by your ability to "chill" so easily, refuse to believe it.

derxa · 21/05/2018 08:58

And yes France gets way more tourists than us without the need for an outdated RF.
The Élysée presidential palace costs £103.5m a year.
