To have lost hope of losing weight

somesetmeadow · 19/05/2018 07:39

I have always had a tendency to lean towards plumpness. I put on a bit of weight in my early teens but lost it at 15/16.

I then out on a shitload of weight at university but lost it afterwards and maintained a reasonable weight after that although it was a battle.

But somehow the last three years and I’ve lost it. I’m 14 stone and at my height that’s big! I stick to a diet really well and then lose the plot and binge eat Pringles and chocolate and cake. I do exercise but it’s not enough to counter the amount of crap I know I’m eating.

Has anyone been in this position?

Try the Dr. Michael Mosley blood sugar diet

somesetmeadow · 19/05/2018 07:43

I would if I a) knew what it was and b) thought I could stick to it.

I just can’t seem to stick to a diet and don’t know why.

Me,me me . Lifetime gainer, loser here and I'm talking 5/6 stone. I must have lost the weight of a few people in my lifetime. Currently starting and failing to get into a diet. I find the motivation is not there but I really bloody need to find it. Start off the day quite well and then find myself raiding the cupboards. Being a secret eater as well is a nightmare. Wishing you well.

Stop binging on utter crap

abbsisspartacus · 19/05/2018 07:46

Helpful comment from araiwa

You need to understand why you do this

WeWere0nABreak · 19/05/2018 07:48

Have you had a health check recently? A blood sugar test scared me into losing 3 stone. If you struggle with willpower like I did, facing up to potential health issues could be tough self love?

If you have the cash, a few personal trainer sessions could help too - you can skive a slimming club, but there's no escaping a one on one weighing session like that!

SpornStar · 19/05/2018 07:48

Check out TeamRH Fitness on Facebook. Really common sense approach to weight loss and great for people prone to binges as no food is off limits. I’ve been following it for a few months, have lost weight consistently and not had a single binge whereas I used to binge frequently. It gives you a really good understanding of nutrition and what your body needs to function well and still lose weight.

Swearwolf · 19/05/2018 07:48

I have the exact same problem. I'll eat really well, lose a couple of pounds, then lose all motivation and eat a mountain of crap. I've been yo-yo-ing the same 4lb for two years now. Sadly the only things that have really worked for me have been big things - breastfeeding a newborn, working a whole summer of 12 hour shifts without a proper lunch break, food poisoning... But once the weight is down I can maintain it for years. I think for me, I need to adjust my thinking about food, it helps if I get a massive dose of guilt around eating crap, but the only thing that really works is not buying stuff. I have two small children so that's hard.

Non sure this really counted as advice, I just wanted to sympathise!

ArsenalsPlayingAtHome · 19/05/2018 07:49

I hope this doesn't sound patronising but my mantra is "move more".

Rather than thinking about how much or little you're eating, think about how long you're sitting still, and try to move more throughout the day.

I'm a yo yo-er too, and have fallen back into the habit of snacking in the evenings.

Hand in hand with that for me is that it makes me feel more slovenly, & I want to sit down more and move less. I'm now trying to stop the rot by sitting still as little as possible and moving as much as possible.

Mn really is not helping with this thoughGrin.

It's shit isn't it? I've put weight on recently & I'm fuming with myself for it.

Don't give up hope, just try and change the onus being on food to your levels of activity/inactivity.

JennyOnAPlate · 19/05/2018 07:51

It is really really difficult op. I've struggled with my weight all my life and I completely understand. I've lost 2.5 stone since last September through a mix of healthy eating and myfitnesspal. I still have about 4 stone to lose though and have completely lost all motivation!

I think something has to click in your head somewhere that makes you truly want to do it. If you're in the mindset (as I am) that you'd rather eat cake, it's never going to work.

I wish I had the solution.

littlepeas · 19/05/2018 07:51

If you have Instagram have a look at LauraThomasPHD and intuitive eating.

Swearwolf · 19/05/2018 07:53

Oh, and I made that sound like I've only got 4lb to lose, no, it's more like 2 stone! But 4lb is the most I manage to lose. Throughout my 20s I maintained a size 8-10 well, but now I'm back up to a large 12 - at my height, at least a stone above a healthy weight range.

Luisa27 · 19/05/2018 07:54

...,I second the Michael Mosley blood sugar diet OP

Stick to it and you’ll lose weight, it’s very very effective 👍

WhiteCoyote · 19/05/2018 07:56

You need to change your mindset of it being a diet and start seeing it as a permanent lifestyle change - also not being so strict on yourself that you resort to binging. If you allow yourself half a tub of ice cream on Saturday after a week of eating healthy, you’re a lot less likely to go “screw it” and binge on everything in sight.

Keep motivated! I’ve found loads of inspirational pics and quotes on Pinterest, and look at them every time I want to give up and eat shit. It gives me the oomph until I can get to my treat day without guilt Smile

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 19/05/2018 07:56

I was the same (13) andnit easnt until I did a group challenge that focussed on the entire package that I was motivated enough to stop eating crap . Honestly once you change the habits they really can stick

But in fairly simple terms you need
To START and develop some new
Practices

For some People it’s a challenge they join
For some it’s WW /SW
For some it’s a health scare

It’s so do-able but you need to work out a reason why and a method

I never thought I could stop smoking , drinking and lose weight . But I surprised myself

snowsun · 19/05/2018 07:56

Its not diets you need , it's support to understand why you can't stop yourself eating too much of the wrong foods. Until you can sort out the psychological reason for it you're not going to be able to change your eating habits.
How about approaching it differently and see if you can get some psychological therapy. There may not be a great trauma that caused it but it could be as simply that you've been taught to reward yourself with bad food and that's stuck in your sub conscious memory. If it is this you could be eating to feed the part of the brain that is connected with reward or feeling good and it's become addictive.

Luisa27 · 19/05/2018 07:58

Type ‘Michael Moseley Blood Sugar Diet’ into google. All the information you need is at your fingertips.
Try it for 2 weeks OP - it’s amazingly effective. If you stick to it you’ll see incredible results within a couple of months
Good luck!

PurpleDaisies · 19/05/2018 07:58

If it were easy, everyone would be slim.

Slimming world has worked well for friends and relatives. Having a class to go to and knowing you’re getting weighed by someone helps.

Luisa27 · 19/05/2018 07:59

...and I’d argue it’s not a diet...,it’s a healthy lifestyle. Once you lose a little bit of weight you’ll find you’ll be able, and want to, exercise more - honestly OP - try it and see for yourself.

araiwa · 19/05/2018 08:00

Any diet will help you lose weight

Ops problem is being unable to stick to any and bingeing crap

JustDanceAddict · 19/05/2018 08:02

I am trying to change my eating habits which is the best way, although I do skip back occasionally as we are all human!
I try and eat less wheat as it def bloats me out - so one slice of bread with salad instead of two as a sandwich, more tomato sauce & less pasta, no cereal/bread at breakfast (yog/fruit/nuts/oats).
Also a very small amount of crap so one or two squares of good choc after dinner.
I walk more too but I don’t have a lot to lose. If I did I’d cut all crap out but it’s hard to maintain for long as it’s so boring!!
I’ve done mfp which really works too and gives you a good idea of calorie content.

MiniCooperLover · 19/05/2018 08:03

Do you exercise OP? I was 14st 9 weeks ago, I've managed to start exercising seriously. I do 4 different things a week (I squeeze 45 mins in after school drop off where I can). Ive lost 8lb so far. I'm starting to feel stronger with better stamina but it's hard work I won't lie. My weight can fluctuate by 4lb overnight so I'm going to have to do a lot more to get there. But it's doable 👍

Eolian · 19/05/2018 08:03

Low carb. It's the only diet that actually stops me wanting to eat crap. Dieting is hard. The only way to even have a chance of sticking to it is to pick a diet that makes you less hungry and breaks your addiction to sugary, starchy stuff. I'm not saying other diets don't make you lose weight. They do if you can stick to them. Low carb simply requires less willpower because it changes your appetite not just your diet. I'm losing about 2lb a week (8lb down now).

Moving more will make you fitter and healthier, but alone it won't have much impact on your weight unless you're doing a hell of a lot of exercise. Even when I was running 4 or 5 times a week I didn't lose weight unless I controlled my diet too.

Need to look at why you binge. Overeaters Anonymous is a nice self-help group.
