Daughters 18th birthday on the last day of May. Now cake maker has said she has too many cakes to make so sorry but she’s not doing it anymore.

Just so unprofessional, I booked it ages ago. Not even sure if I can find anyone else now.

That's extremely unprofessional of the cake maker. It certainly warrants some negative feedback on her social media. If this is a small business she has certainly shot herself in the foot as her prospective clients will be put off by someone who is so flaky.

NoFucksImAQueen · 18/05/2018 21:53

oh god I'd be livid. why do you have to go without a cake over anyone else? so unprofessional.

ilovelondon123 · 18/05/2018 21:59

Where are you based op? That’s awful. So unprofessional. I’m a cake maker and would never ever go back on an order unless my arm was hanging off 😂

pasturesgreen · 18/05/2018 22:01

Ridiculously unprofessional. Social media is your friend here.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/05/2018 22:03

Rule number one of being a professional cake maker is to have other industry friends to pass work onto if you can no longer make a cake. What if she broke her arm??? Is she even a ‘real’ cake maker - registered with council, hmrc, environmental health? Gets my goat, so many hobby bakers thinking it’s a job anyone can do Hmm (rant over).

AnalUnicorn · 18/05/2018 22:05

She sounds like an amateur. Check your local Facebook groups for other recommendations.

Skisunsnow · 18/05/2018 22:07

Wow, that's terrible. I am a registered and insured home cake maker and would never do that. I have only ever had to cancel one cake and that's because my kiddies had a sickness bug, and even then I found someone else to do it for her.

TheFatkinsDiet · 18/05/2018 22:07

I’ve had worse; went to collect a bespoke cake decoration from the cake maker and he looked a bit flustered then admitted he’d forgotten and asked me to email him the details again. This was on the day I was due to collect it Confused. I told him it was fine and I didn’t need it that much, which was true. Also silently judged him as a pants businessman .

TheFatkinsDiet · 18/05/2018 22:08

Oh sorry yanbu op. That is rubbish.

WindDoesNotBreakTheBendyTree · 18/05/2018 22:10

Oh well, there's 2 weeks to find another baker.

Not the day before (happens)
Ask her if she can recommend someone.
Is something ever so specially fancy and particular required?

TheFrendo · 18/05/2018 22:18

Well, some people are arses, but still, It is only a cake.

It is not a job, boyfriend, house to rent etc.

Not having the perfect cake does not ruin an 18th birthday. In fact having no cake at all does not ruin a birthday.

speakout · 18/05/2018 22:21

I can't get worked up about this.

DD was 18 last week.

We bought ( at her request) a huge Costco cake. (£14). Job done.

yorkshireyummymummy · 18/05/2018 22:24

M and S do really lovely cakes to order..........just a thought if you can’t find anybody.
And I wouldn’t be asking your let down cake maker for a reccomendation. Ask your friends.

Shutouttherain · 18/05/2018 22:26

To the people that do this as a job, would you consider taking on the job in this space of time?

Yes I know a cake doesn’t make a party and other 18 year olds wouldn’t care. But this birthday represents a lot more, as we never thought she’d reach this age. Didn’t mention in my op as not relevant. Just don’t want to the whole “spoilt brat” or “is this all you have to worry about” type comments etc

woodwaj · 18/05/2018 22:26

If you are in Manchester a cake maker I used this year asked for 1 weeks notice.

IMBU · 18/05/2018 22:30

YANBU. I was let down by a cake maker who was going to make my wedding cake. I had an appointment where we agreed on a design and I paid a deposit and then she was near impossible to get hold of. Eventually we found out that she was closing down. She must have known this was likely when I had the initial meeting with her. Don't offer the service if you can't do the work

StealthPolarBear · 18/05/2018 22:33

Where are you op

Sitranced · 18/05/2018 22:36

I wouldn't say it's unprofessional, it's disappointing yes but she could have told you the morning of and left you right up shit creek. There's still 10 days left till the end of May so you have some time to get/make a cake.

Aridane · 18/05/2018 22:42

What sort of cake had you commissioned ?

mintich · 18/05/2018 22:43

M&s cakes to order

grandplans · 18/05/2018 23:02

What kind of cake are you after and roughly where do you live?

tillytrotter1 · 18/05/2018 23:06

I made a My Little Pony Dream Castle for my daughter's 18th, she'd always wanted one, dead easy to do and very impressive. It's all in the cutting, lots of books have one.

PodgeBod · 18/05/2018 23:09

I would be pissed off tbh and I would leave a public review honestly stating my experience.

Juicyfrooty · 18/05/2018 23:10

M&s or Waitrose cakes to order are lovely

NWQM · 18/05/2018 23:12

I'm another one voting for M&S. They do some truly beautiful cakes and many only need 7 days notice. Or if you put out a plea in a local Facebook group I bet you'd find some recommendations. You are right though to be annoyed. It's so unprofessional. Hope you manage to get sorted and enjoy you 'little' girl's special day.
