Daughters 18th birthday on the last day of May. Now cake maker has said she has too many cakes to make so sorry but she’s not doing it anymore.

Just so unprofessional, I booked it ages ago. Not even sure if I can find anyone else now.

We recently had the huge rainbow cake from M&S and I can really recommend it. Having paid £80+ for home made cakes previously, it felt very good value at £45 (and it was personalised).

LagunaBubbles · 18/05/2018 23:27

I can't get worked up about this. DD was 18 last week.
We bought ( at her request) a huge Costco cake. (£14). Job done.

Not a particularly helpful comment, as thats you. The OP wanted a bespoke home made cake designed for her daughter and theres nothing wrong with that, not a mass produced cake.

Very unprofessional OP, I hope you find someone else.

I do cakes. The only one I have ever had to cancel was one 18 months ago when I was rushed to hospital for an emergency gall bladder removal (infected with gangrene). Unfortunately it was the day before the cake was due and I had it all covered and ready for decorating but was too ill to try to get any of my cake mates to take over. Fortunately it was for a regular customer who was lovely about DS messaging her to cancel for me and I did do her cake for free this year.

Anyway, you should probably still be able to find someone decent with this sort of notice. Where are you- if around Edinburghish, I could recommend a few (though not me as will be on holiday so am not touting for business. Grin )

Op our local bakery did the most amazing christening cake for us with about this much notice. Do you have a decent local bakery? i would get on facebook and thimgs tomorrow. Draft an email explaining the situation and send it to everyone. I am sure someone will come forward. Are you on any local facebook groups where you might be able to get recommendations?

Pebblespony · 19/05/2018 00:54

People who are saying it's only a cake are missing the point. A service was booked, the provider presumably committed to providing it and is now saying otherwise. As a business it is unprofessional to not properly plan workload etc. YANBU.

This happened to me the day before my DS’s birthday party and the only place that would do it overnight was cakes.co.uk. I had low expectations but was very pleasantly surprised, and I have used them multiple times since. It’s a bit expensive for what you get but the cake is fresh and they can’t build a three-tier Star Wars cake, they do personalize a fair bit and they genuinely get it to you the next day, even the next morning for a surcharge. Plus it’s egg free.

EllenOlenska · 19/05/2018 01:47

It's utterly appalling and yanbu. You made a booking.
This happened to my friend 2 weeks before her wedding. In the end she bought the stands herself and bought 3 "off the shelf" from Patisserie Valerie that worked out cheaper by about a third of her original "custom" order. The staff there were also fantastically helpful.

Whitecurrents · 19/05/2018 05:20

That’s completely unprofessional, I would be furious. If you happen to be in London I can recommend this company which I’ve used many times www.londoncakes.com/

MrsJonesAndMe · 19/05/2018 07:21

Very unprofessional!

What sort of cake were you looking for and roughly where are you? I think M&S, Waitrose or Valerie might be your port of call now. We have a local independent department store who could do this sort of thing too - in case you have similar.

MindatWork · 19/05/2018 07:31

Hi OP, have a look on fb and see if there are any wedding fb groups for your local area (one where brides can recommend suppliers, etc - here are about 4 diff ones for my area). There will be loads of local cake makers on there and people should be able to tag them in if you post asking for help. Good luck xxx

Everexpandingwaistline · 19/05/2018 07:46

I order all my birthday cakes from M&S, they're really good value & tasty. Depending on the type of cake, you only need 7 days notice. Some require a bit longer but there are plenty of styles to choose from.

fluffydinosaur · 19/05/2018 07:52

YADNBU! that is ridiculous and the cake maker should have not taken on the order if they didn't have enough time. on the positive side, at least they aren't going to try and rush it for you and possibly produce something disappointing.
OP whereabouts are you based? I'm a cake maker and depending on the size of your order I could probably fit you in at the end of the month. I'm based in the SE and cover round Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, and bits of London and Essex. if you are still looking for something and that's any good, please PM me.
