AIBU to think we should have upvoting like Reddit?

Was just reading a post I really agreed with that gave great advice and thought it was a shame there's no way to upvote it to greater prominence like you can do on Reddit. As it is, you just get the posts in chronological order rather than seeing the ones many people consider to be the most useful first.

No

Midthreademergencynamechange · 18/05/2018 21:00

Have you been on Mumsnet long?

starzig · 18/05/2018 21:03

Some people on here would have an anxiety attack if you accidentally knocked the down arrow though.

Buggered · 18/05/2018 21:11

Christ. We have whole threads because someone received a “look”. A down vote.........phew. You think Kim Jong Un is volatile. You’d open your IPad to MN and a mushroom cloud would rise from the screen.......

Been here about 5 years I think @Mid. Are people really so petty as to get upset by a downvote?

Take a look at MNTrolls, they are new to Reddit and they always, always moan about downvotes, despite it being spelled out about vote fuzzing and the reddit lore of moaning about downvotes will get you a downvote etc, and that sub isn't even discussing anything controversial

Its good and bad, it can create echo chambers and sometimes the top posts are nothing more than memes such as DAE, Tories are scum or Corbyn is...

It is good at reddit as that is what it was built around (well introduced very early on) but it wouldn't work here.

MrsJayy · 18/05/2018 22:00

What is upvoting I can barely work mumsnet without something new

CorvusUmbranox · 18/05/2018 22:05

I dunno, if there was only the ability to give upvotes, and no downvote option, then maybe it could work, but I find the lack of social media bollocks rather refreshing, tbh

FlyingDandelionSeed · 18/05/2018 22:07

I don't like Reddit style rearranging on upvotes and downvotes, but I've used a few forums that have 'i agree/I disagree' buttons, which saves having to read through endless people writing out the same thing over and over, or quoting someone just to write 'This.' or 'My thoughts exactly'.

People have to actually use them though, and I'm not sure that would work here.

Justanotherlurker · 18/05/2018 22:19

Some people would still be upset at not receiving upvotes, on Reddit it works as you can hide the obvious trolls or you can go onto some other subs and see the echo chamber in effect where reasonable or truthful opinions are hidden by downvotes.

It wouldn't work on here as its a flat forum structure so it would just become a popularity contest, at least on reddit conversations can spin off from one top comment

noeffingidea · 18/05/2018 22:49

Completely pointless, and childish, IMO. I only use them if I've started the thread, to thank people for posting, otherwise I just ignore them.
It would be nice to have an edit and a quote function though.

beansforbreakfastonceagain · 18/05/2018 23:32

Bollocks. Most references to downvotes on there that I've seen are of the don't give a fuck nature.

PodgeBod · 18/05/2018 23:32

No, I think reddit upvoting/downvoting is good in theory but it doesn't actually work like it's supposed to according to "reddiquite". People just down vote what they disagree with even if it is a valid point or opinion. I like that on MN I can see a dissenting opinion even if it is batshit insane.

TheKarateKitty · 18/05/2018 23:36

There’s no reason for upvoting or down voting. Who cares how many people like or dislike a comment? Everyone that wants to comment will, or just quietly agree or disagree.

Chromatographer · 18/05/2018 23:38

I wouldn't want the higher ranked posts to appear higher, because then it would disrupt the order of the thread, but I wouldn't mind a system like on the student room, where you can give a post a positive rating, and the number of positive ratings appears on the post.

sobeyondthehills · 18/05/2018 23:41

didnt netmums have this system

Hygge · 18/05/2018 23:41

I don't understand the up and down voting thing on there.

All the conversations seem to be out of order and in a pointy shape.

It's probably for the best as if I understood it I'd spend longer on it and I dont have the time for that kind of commitment to another website Grin

It might do - I often see the odd post with really useful or just funny content in a see of stuff and would like to highlight it in some way.

Assuming that the members of a new sub are automatically new to reddit is a mistake. I'd expect some new, but by no means all will be. Any new sub whether populated by new or old redditors takes a while to settle down, even if its not under attack.

C8H10N4O2 · 18/05/2018 23:43

People just down vote what they disagree with even if it is a valid point or opinion.

It varies a lot by sub - many subs have their own culture around voting hence lurking before posting is as valid there as anywhere else.

paxillin · 19/05/2018 00:36

I don't think it is a very useful feature. It wouldn't sit well with MN's culture.

I'm not sure it is useful on reddit, either. Sometimes, you post on a popular sub (a news one or one perhaps) and get thousands of upvotes for a throwaway remark. Then again, on a smaller sub, thoughtful posts end up with 3 upvotes, simply because the topic is niche and the sub small.

There is a mumsnet subreddit, if you want that functionality just post on that.

I don't agree with introducing votes to MN. But I think there is nothing wrong with suggesting things you think are working well on other fora.

Yes there are quite a few sites using that model, its not a bad compromise. I don't see this or any other option being adopted to be honest but I'd be interested in trials of something like this in a non AIBU topic.

I've been on many platforms over the years, I've never joined one because of a specific functionality. I've always joined for the content and the posters and sometimes ported a useful bet of functionality to a different site.
