To drive 5.5 hours without stopping?

NotMyCircusMonkeys · 18/05/2018 17:02

DP and I are on a short break in the UK, we left first thing this morning. The journey took about 5.5 hours and I drove all the way; we filled up with fuel before we left and had drinks and snacks in the car. Obviously if we had needed the loo we would have stopped.

I spoke to DM when I got here and she was very concerned that we hadn't stopped for a rest on the way down.

AIBU to think that two healthy adults can survive a 5.5 hour car journey without needing a break? I do much longer days at work and often work through my lunch, so I don't really see the difference.

How far would you drive without stopping?

Meh, I've done it but I try to remember to stop for a pee break, as it takes the pressure off the concentration of driving.

Eolian · 18/05/2018 17:04

YANBU. We've definitely done this. Sometimes stop for the loo, but that doesn't really count as a rest!

kes53 · 18/05/2018 17:05

Ive done 5.5 hours to six hours non-stop to destination and then returned same day. Tiring but not unduly.

Grasslands · 18/05/2018 17:05

You rest when you get to your desired destination.

Sirzy · 18/05/2018 17:06

As long as your sensible and don’t push on when you know your tired or need a break then I don’t see a problem.

BlueJava · 18/05/2018 17:07

YANBU but personally I'd stop for a break on the way.

RestingBitchFaced · 18/05/2018 17:07

I've done this occasionally, it's fine. You can pull over if you need to, but I would rather keep going

Furano · 18/05/2018 17:08

Up to you, personally I need a wee break after about 3.5 hours

halcyondays · 18/05/2018 17:08

It sounds a bit much, I agree with your dm. If it was us there's no way we'd last that long without the loo anyway.

Thebluedog · 18/05/2018 17:09

Truck drivers can drive up to 9hrs a day, they do have forced breaks, but I think it’s 4.5hrs in a block before a break - I think, so dont take it as gospel

I do it all the time, 5/6 hrs as my parents live in the arse end of wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

youarenotkiddingme · 18/05/2018 17:10

I've driven 3.5 hours to somewhere and driven home again after 5 hours!

I couldn't manage 5.5 hours as my bladder would rebel Grin

DramaAlpaca · 18/05/2018 17:11

That's a long time to be driving without a break.

I'd have stopped halfway myself, to give my brain a rest from concentrating on the road and to have a wee

Sirzy · 18/05/2018 17:12

The blue - it is maximum of 4.5 hours before a break of at least 45 minutes.

vampirethriller · 18/05/2018 17:12

My mother drives 4.5 ish hours to her nearest city and back in a day without a break on the way. Sometimes she has a nap in the car before setting off home but she wouldn't consider a break unless someone's kidneys were about to explode.

RedSkyAtNight · 18/05/2018 17:12

The AA and other motoring organisation recommend that it's not a good idea to drive more than 2-3 hours without a break as you get tired and lose concentration. so if you and your partner had split the driving between you, I think it would have been fine not to have stopped, but you are potentially putting yourself and others at risk by not having a break from driving.

Ohyesiam · 18/05/2018 17:12

Every time I tell my poor old mum anything she treats it like I’ve been through a disaster or a tragedy.
We usually just end up talking about the weather and what we had for tea..... actually even then she can sometimes say” oh poor you, cooking again?” Confused

RomeoBunny · 18/05/2018 17:12

Piss easy. I drive from Liverpool to the South Coast all the time in one run. Anywhere from 4hrs45 to 6hrs depending on traffic.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 18/05/2018 17:14

It's fine - I've done it before but usually would need a wee stop in the middle!

I'm driven from London to Alnwick without stopping. That's probably the longest! 327 miles - took me 6 hours as weather was vile.

FlyingDandelionSeed · 18/05/2018 17:16

I think it's a good idea to stop (just a couple of mins) and stretch legs/get blood moving after a few hours.

Human bodies haven't evolved with long sedentary periods, they need the movement to function properly.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 18/05/2018 17:18

Of course you can survive easily, but it's down to individuals. A young driver, or someone who is not used to drive further than the other side of town should have a rest.
A confident driver, used to drive long distance, can drive for much longer. You don't even need snacks for 5 hours, we eat far too much and too often in this country.

The worst drivers are the ones who have strict rules, and will carry on despite being obviously tired. It may be that you need to stop after 1 hour, then you should, even if you are experienced. I think I've done 7 or 8 hours straight in the past and I was fine. I must have stopped after 8 hours for a loo break and a quick coffee and then on again for 4 or 5 hours. With the kids in the car, I stop much more often but also for longer. We do plan the trips accordingly, but to be fair, we have less chance of resting properly the night before!

Cakeorchocolate · 18/05/2018 17:18

No yanbu. I very rarely stopped for breaks when driving before having dd. Needs must now! Some people enjoy a rest though or just a stop somewhere out of interest or stretch their legs etc. No one is U for this. Everyone is different that's all.

adaline · 18/05/2018 17:20

As long as you're happy doing it I don't see an issue.

I'd need a break halfway through for the toilet and to stretch my legs though!

BertrandRussell · 18/05/2018 17:22

I would have pre children. Post children I can't last that long without a pee.

JennyOnAPlate · 18/05/2018 17:24

I am amazed and jealous of anyone who has a bladder that could cope with that. I'd need two pee breaks Blush

Cheby · 18/05/2018 17:57

I would have done this, pre kids. 2 DC later and NFW would I be able to wait 5.5hrs for a wee. 😂
