Have looked online but can’t see yet and thought the answer may be quicker here! My 9 year old wants to play and need to do some research! Thanks.

A fortnite game is 20 minutes long. HTH.

GlitterStick · 29/12/2018 19:42

Yes, there's a twenty minute game.
The playground mode ones that they play with their friends is nearly an hour

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 29/12/2018 19:45

But they're not the same. That's like saying a game of Minecraft lasts an hour Hmm

exLtEveDallas · 29/12/2018 19:51

If you are playing in a paired battle with friends, leaving the battle (ie mum says your time is up) means you screw over your friends and they get very angry with you in the playground the following day. So you need to play single player games, or mum needs to let you have more than 30 mins screen time.... and that's how it starts Wink

GlitterStick · 29/12/2018 19:57

ExLtEveDallas has it Grin
Might try that with my nearly 16 year old next time he's on.
"Tell your friends you can only play the 20 minute game as mummy says it's time to come off after 30 minutes."
Yeah. Go down like a lead balloon lol.
Can tell who has young kiddywonks and not nearly teens and teens Grin

FuckingYuleLog · 29/12/2018 19:58

Plenty of times my dc has been playing and we’ve had to go out or one of his friends have had to go for their tea or whatever. I’ve never known it to lead to grudges 😂

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 29/12/2018 20:04

We have a three game limit. You can't time limit Fortnite, it's so unfair! If DS dies before 10 mins is up, he can have an extra game.

The parents who have problems are usually the ones who know fuck all about online gaming and can't be bothered to find out. I'd be pissed off if someone dragged me off an online game if I was doing well. Imagine being dragged out of a restaurant halfway through a meal, or dragged away from a film in the cinema 5 mins before the ending.

gamerwidow · 29/12/2018 20:04

As I’m sure others have said it has a PEGI rating of 12 so will not be suitable for some under 12s but you have to use your best judgement as a parent to decide how young is too young.
I don’t see people getting their knickers in a twist about under 12s watching Black Panther or Guardians of the Galaxy or Star Wars although they also have a 12 rating.

GlitterStick · 29/12/2018 20:07

See, I don't think watching a 12 such as Starwars or whatever is quite the same as playing a 12 like Fortnite.
Games are more interactive. You're "in" them, absorbed. Especially if you've got the fkn headphones on.

gamerwidow · 29/12/2018 20:10

That’s because games have been demonised as a form of entertainment in the same way as video nasties in the 80s/90s and heavy metal in the 70s/80s.

masterandmargarita · 29/12/2018 20:14

Don't think either of those have been recognised as an addiction by the world health organisation

FixItUpChappie · 29/12/2018 20:33

I think this is a great quote from Tristan Harris a former manager with Goggle:

"there's a narrative that, oh, I guess they`re just doing this like we used to gossip on the phone, but what this misses is that your telephone in the 1970s didn't have a thousand engineers on the other side of the telephone who were redesigning it to work with other telephones and then updating the way your telephone worked every day to be more and more persuasive."

BaronessBomburst · 29/12/2018 20:46

The Switch has parental controls meaning that the chat function is off.
Screen time ends when the round does, be it 2 or 20 mins later.
There is no credit card linked and in-game purchases are blanket 'no'.
It works fine here.

Dimsumlosesum · 29/12/2018 20:47

Fucking never. Or failing that, pats at least 18.

birdiewoof · 29/12/2018 21:01

Don’t fecking do it! 🙈🤣 my son is almost 11 and him and all his friends play it.

PatriciaThomson · 30/12/2018 03:36

My DS (10) plays it and he says its not violent

Seniorschoolmum · 30/12/2018 03:55

Don’t do it. It’s horribly addictive and makes my lovely ds angry and agressive. It should be 18 IMO.

karentookthekidz69 · 11/12/2019 22:03

OneForMeToo · 11/12/2019 22:14

Vulpine · 11/12/2019 22:28

Aye it was probably reignited by a zombified fortnite player

TemporaryUsernameAIBU · 11/12/2019 22:55

If you’re not a gamer yourself you’ll never be convinced it’s fine for your kid.

It’s like asking you how it feels to climb Mount Everest if you’ve only ever pootled up Primrose Hill.

Play the free version yourself first and you’ll get the best opinion; your’s.

It’s immersive, your child will ignore you whilst playing as it requires concentration, and the inevitable frustration if the child is asked to leave the game before his session is completed.

DreamMum32 · 29/12/2019 12:13
