The word is actually laurel

Plantpotpot · 17/05/2018 15:02

OMG I think it might be a scam (even from the BBC website!). Just listened again and it definitely changed to being ‘laurel’. Although I’m not sure how they would do that unless the link is ‘live’ and can be changed? Clearly I’m the only one interested though!!! Ought to get on with the housework i suppose..

Well yes - it is now laurel! But i swear it was a different recording 5 mins ago

I hear Yammy

It depends on which frequencies you hear, it's all the same recording but if you can't hear the higher frequencies it sounds like Laurel.
If you had some interfering noise at one point or another it would sound different.

liminality · 17/05/2018 15:07

it's to do with the frequency, yanny is at a higher frequency, laurel lower. People with more damaged hearing will hear the lower one (like me!). Different speakers and bass will change it too
Sorry to be a killjoy!

Acrasia · 17/05/2018 15:11

I listened to it yesterday and heard Laurel, then a few hours later I played it for DP without telling him anything about it and he heard Laurel, but I heard Yanny. I heard Laurel again this morning. So weird how our brains work. Fascinating.

Plantpotpot · 17/05/2018 15:15

It’s so weird that I heard ‘early’ (at a push yanny) but then now I hear laurel without question! Are you sure they can’t be changing it? To create a conflict and therefore loads of posts. Even the twitter replies on the article are people changing their minds! Maybe I’m over-thinking thisHmm

I heard early too or maybe ya-early.

Walkerbean16 · 17/05/2018 16:11

there was a big thread on chat about it here:

MakeTheManSomeFuckingEggs · 17/05/2018 16:13

I only hear "moral"

toffee1000 · 17/05/2018 16:41

I heard laurel. Then when the word was being repeated over and over I swear I heard “yorrel” at one point...

themagicamulet · 17/05/2018 16:56

Dd(12) nd I both hear 'yammy' so we must be super weird...

Hedwig86 · 17/05/2018 17:01

Are we witnessing the birth of the most inane conspiracy theory ever?

CornishMaid1 · 17/05/2018 17:03

I listened on my laptop through the speakers and could only hear 'Laurel' to the point that I thought everyone was making 'Yanny' up (what is that anyway?!).

I went to see another colleague to tell her about it and she listened to it through her headphones. She could only hear 'Laurel' but as she was playing it through the headphones I could hear 'Yanny' which freaked me out.

It is to do with how you hear the frequency/pitch but I am not sure whether how you listen affects it too, i.e. bassy speakers sound 'Laurel' but higher pitch headphones sound 'Yanny'.

x2boys · 17/05/2018 17:04

I'm sure they keep changing it I first heard laurel very clearly , than yarry/yanny than laurel again its now gone back to yarry/yanny on my phone at all times Hmm

CornishMaid1 · 17/05/2018 17:04

There is one online where they have a sliding scale of frequency (I think NY Times had it if you google) and you can slide along to hear the change. It is actually weird to do.

Plantpotpot · 17/05/2018 18:09

They’ve changed it again!!! I’m sure they have! Or is my hearing changing? Still sounds like yearly/early though but was definitely Laurel last time I listened. Before the first time Hmm

Plantpotpot · 17/05/2018 18:24

And now it’s laurel again Confused. Think I need to step away from the internet

RoomOfRequirement · 17/05/2018 18:25

It changes for me based on how close my phone is to me. It's so odd.

PandaG · 17/05/2018 18:26

I hear something more like yah-me. 7 or 8 of us listened to it at the same time this morning at work - so same sound from the same speaker, and 3 of us heard yanny/ yah me and the rest laurel.

DustyMaiden · 17/05/2018 18:27

I heard yearly with right ear and laurel with left.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 17/05/2018 19:32

I hear yanny without my hearing aids in and laurel with them in.

I have sensorineural hearing loss (upper register) so I hear bass sounds clearly enough without my aids but I only get upper register when I am wearing my hearing aids.

cablewable · 17/05/2018 19:36

Yanny.
