Cheeky or smart?

So my friend has just admitted to me that if she is approaching a roundabout and there is a lot of traffic in the left lane, and the right line is clear, she will go into the right lane, bypass the traffic going left, go ALL the way around the roundabout then simply come indicate and leave the roundabout on the original exit she wished to go down. Therefore skipping all the cars waiting patiently to go left!

She says that “technically she did all the way round which is what the right lane is for.”

We live in a town where most roundabouts have a very busy left lane during rush hour, whereas the right lane which leads into the more rural routes is normally empty.

So is this unreasonable and cheeky, or smart?

I’ve only been driving two years and quite frankly wouldn’t do this.

It has never occurred to me to do this but I guess it’s legal so no problem?

BlueJava · 16/05/2018 18:33

Sounds like a typical "White Van Man" tactic! It's cheeky imho.

Poodletip · 16/05/2018 18:41

I do it sometimes at one roundabout I use because sometimes the queue goes right back onto the dual carriageway and I don't feel safe stopping at the back of the queue on a 70mph road. If the queue is on the slip road I don't do it though because it does mean that queue has to wait longer because there's another car on the roundabout stopping them from joining it.

What does drive me mad though is people queueing in the left lane when roadworks are reducing two lanes to one. It's much better to queue in both lanes and then filter. I've seen people queue for 2 miles in one lane while the other lane was empty, despite signs quite clearly saying "use both lanes", which meant the queue then went round a major roundabout clogging it up for traffic going in all directions. Crazy! But driving down the empty lane past all the people in the queue got really angry reactions despite that being the instruction on the sign shrugs

Luisa27 · 16/05/2018 18:42

I do this too sometimes

KinkyAfro · 16/05/2018 18:45

She's doing nothing wrong and how is it cheeky?

ALiensAbductedMe · 16/05/2018 18:46

I do this 😳

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 16/05/2018 18:47

I do this too. Totally within the law / rules of the roundabout and helps stop the q getting worse! It's people all piling into one lane instead of using both that causes jams..

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 16/05/2018 18:48

Smart.
I do this at a particular roundabout when traffic is heavy.
As long as you signal clearly,, its perfectly ok

Mannix · 16/05/2018 18:49

Cheeky. It may be legal but she's skipped the queue and everyone has to wait longer because of her.

DragonMamma · 16/05/2018 18:52

I’ve done this plenty of times when I’m in a rush so I’m saying smart. If I have time I’ll queue nicely though.

TeeBee · 16/05/2018 18:52

I do it too. I don't see the problem. The whole point of a roundabout is to keep the traffic flowing, not slow everything down.

NeedForBlossom · 16/05/2018 18:56

Cheeky. DH does this and can't understand why I don't!

chipsandpeas · 16/05/2018 18:56

ive done this

LemonysSnicket · 16/05/2018 18:58

Genius!

That1950sMum · 16/05/2018 18:59

Genius!

User467 · 16/05/2018 19:04

Genius! I hate the whole driving to the front of the queue then nudging your way in but this is brilliant! I will be doing this tomorrow 😂

fourfuckssake4 · 16/05/2018 21:24

I do it tooSmile not often but saves me time

squiggleirl · 16/05/2018 21:32

In our house it's known as the 'Doc Hudson' manoeuvre - turn right to go left...

Cath2907 · 16/05/2018 21:33

I do this!

aintnothinbutagstring · 16/05/2018 21:42

Why not? She's used the roundabout in the correct way so why add to the queue? I do it sometimes.

emwithme · 16/05/2018 21:55

The only issue is when you're so used to doing this at rush hour you do it automatically at non-rush hour and get strange looks from your passengers

SurferRona · 16/05/2018 22:03

Yup. Also do this whenever I can - gives me a welcome little frisson of smugness when I do Grin

NewYearNewMe18 · 16/05/2018 22:04

I do this too !

HellenaHandbasket · 16/05/2018 22:06

Not in the slightest bit cheeky

EscapeFromHubby · 16/05/2018 22:09

I do this at one particular roundabout on my way to work. When bad the traffic can queue back to the previous roundabout at the motorway exit and take a good 15-20 mins to get through
