King Charles and Queen Camilla

AIBU to wonder why so many people seem to think this will not happen?

I can understand why a lot of people abroad seem to think it’s likely that Prince Charles will just hand over the crown straight to William because he’s younger and more popular. Most countries don’t have royal families, and in some European monarchies routine abdication is something that actually happens.

But I was reading some of the completely mental royal wedding threads on here and was surprised by the number of similar comments. I particularly enjoyed one Daily Express reader’s person’s comment about how the public would never accept Camilla as queen.

I don’t think most people give a shiny shit whether Camilla is Queen or not, but those that do have an issue with it will have to get used to the idea. Prince Charles didn’t have to give up his place in the line of succession when he married her, therefore unless the Queen outlives Charles, he will be king and Camilla will be queen!

If by "reignite interest" you mean further campaigning for a republic then I agree with you!

Yes Charles and Camilla may be so pointless as king and queen that the monarchy will lose its shine and strengthen the republic cause.
Or will and kate will grow in popularity and people will rejoice to see them take over.

HoppingPavlova · 16/05/2018 13:38

Personally I think Liz is hanging on as long as possible hoping to outlive Charles. Fingers crossed.

Luisa27 · 16/05/2018 13:47

Isn’t it fascinating how we all have such differing opinions?
I like Charles and Camilla very much...Camilla is really ‘earthy’ and has a laid back, easy character. She’s incredibly funny too....lovely lady.

Sunnymeg · 16/05/2018 13:53

@diddl it was the case in the Royal Family until very recently. I was born in the 1960's and remember when Charles was seen as a bit of a playboy and saw a different girl almost every week. The palace advisors insisted that there wasn't any potential scandal attached to a prospective bride. It has been commonly reported in various histories of the 1970's that Charles was told to have his fun with Camilla but not to expect anything to come of it. The press regarded her as unsuitable and said so frequently at the time. One of the reasons there was such an age gap between Diana and Charles was because his wife had to be a virgin and older candidates weren't. Diana had to undergo a medical examination before the engagement to check her 'status ' and have tests to ensure she could have children. It was widely reported at the time.

I have a question for those in the know.

If Diana had lived, what would her title have been once Kate becomes Princess of Wales, as she will when the Queen does and everyone moves up a notch?

SenecaFalls · 16/05/2018 14:01

In the event that Diana had lived, absent any changes by William, Diana would be Diana, Princess of Wales. Catherine would be HRH The Princess of Wales. However, William as King could have restored Diana's HRH and made her a princess of the United Kingdom, in which case she would have been HRH The Princess Diana.

@BertrandRussell doesn't mean anything - I have to nieces with the same name, who are around the same age, and two other nieces with similar sounding names, again they are around the same age.

All were born when their grandparents were alive and they simply stayed out of it. The second lots of parents simply agreed not to give them exactly the same names.

BlueBug45 · 16/05/2018 14:18

@Queenoftheblitz Won't make a blind bit of difference to most people as Charles is an OAP and will be even older if he becomes King. He will do so rather than abdicate because it is his duty, plus he will realise by doing so he will protect his grandchildren as long as possible.

BertrandRussell · 16/05/2018 14:21

“I like Charles and Camilla very much...Camilla is really ‘earthy’ and has a laid back, easy character. She’s incredibly funny too....lovely lady.”

That’s interesting. Do you see them often? How did you first meet?

biscuitraider · 16/05/2018 14:29

Yeah you can have a right good laugh with Camilla, get a few halves of lager down her, she's a riot. Just keep her off the vodka, gets a bit volatile. Grin

Luisa27 · 16/05/2018 14:36

Thanks @BertrandRussel

Not often - maybe 3 or 4 times a year. First met them at a supper party

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 14:37

another thread says that the couple are having ' bowl food' for the reception, not even a nice sit down. the ones invited from the 'commoners' have to bring their own picnic. I'm glad i;m not going.

School12345 · 16/05/2018 14:44

Are the picnic people the ones invited to hang around in the garden outside the chapel? How patronising.

Butterymuffin · 16/05/2018 14:47

I'm just imagining how the 'I've been invited to a wedding but told to bring my own picnic food' thread would go down on here.

Bowl food, IMO, is not a great choice as you still need a fork to eat it with and that's awkward if you're all standing around.

Luisa27 · 16/05/2018 14:48

Yes @Bluebug45, I have cousins, couple of years age difference- both of whom are called Alexander - one’s known as Xander. I think it’s relatively common amongst....?

Luisa27 · 16/05/2018 14:48

.....oops pressed too quickly 😂

amongst families

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 14:49

Bowl food!
Outrage!
This is a farce event put together by Billy Bodgett.
I was having a Royal Wedding get together at my house but think I might slope off to the pub.
Bowl food? Poor Brenda and Stavros!

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 14:53

I just had another look at the DM website pages to see whats up over there - same old about her half sister and her dad having his Op today in Mexico.

however, what did make me smile was a list of people who the bookies have down who can ' give Meghan away' as it seems her dad wont be doing it -( but who knows?)
100/1 - Kate Middleton! its a long list. Makes me wonder who makes this stuff up at times.
My odds are two million to one but i didnt make the list strangely enough.

BeyondPink · 16/05/2018 14:57

To the person upthread who asked about princess being above duchess...

Born princess (of the blood) is above duchess, but created princess (married a prince) is below. Iirc from a previous royal mn thread.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/05/2018 14:59

However duchess eg Kate takes precedence over blood princess if her husband, Prince of the blood is present.
Basically who curtseys to who

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 15:02

They will all have to curtsey to each other with one hand on a drink and one holding a bowl of sausage rolls and some naice ham.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 16/05/2018 15:05

Well there are 3 realistic options; Meghan walks alone; her mum or Prince Charles.
Another option is her suits costar, Gabriel Macht

He is way too handsome though, and would show up the Windsors

The80sweregreat · 16/05/2018 15:06

Gabriel wasnt on the list sad to say - it was all the other Royals.

I love the bookies odds on these type of things - i bet some people will put a bet on it too. My guess is her mum to do it, makes sense to me.

Queenoftheblitz · 16/05/2018 15:08

It would boost Charles popularity to give her away but etiquette wise it's so wrong.
It should be her mum.

tinytemper66 · 16/05/2018 15:09

It won't affect our everyday lives so why worry about it?!
