my dp has believed this for 30 years. i honestly thought he was winding me up, but no. he really thought female lions are tigers Shock

to make matters worse, i told my db about this and he was really confused. he thought that was right too!

wtf! aibu to be in shock that they believed this or is it a common misconception?!

Oh and another friend refused to believe that birds have ears, and was very shocked when she saw my budgie drinking "with his beak", I'm not sure what she thought he drank with.

Pebblespony · 15/05/2018 17:54

I'm going to use the blind drivers one on my kids. Genius!!

Angie169 · 15/05/2018 17:56

My Dh always though male and female starlings were to different types of birds, and male and female mallards were two different types of ducks .

MsVestibule · 15/05/2018 17:56

She also never realised until I told her that the egg shells are soft until the egg is out the hens body.

I didn't know that either!!

babybythesea · 15/05/2018 17:59

I worked in a zoo for years and Dh still does. Some of the remarks used to leave me speechless. The people who would look at our black macaques and say "Oh, look at the baby gorillas. Oh look. That one's got a baby." Yes, because we separate all the baby gorillas from the parents (apart from the two living in with the adult gorillas obviously) and put them in here. And the three females gorillas have been really prolific and produced 30 babies. Several of which have got babies of their own... You might not know what a macaque is but a) read the sign and b) use some logic and think about what you are saying.
And some of the ignorance on here is astounding. But then, I love animals. I've read about them and watched programmes and worked with them and studied them at university. So some of what people don't know always strikes me as so incredibly basic. But I suspect if I was tested on some basic knowledge in another area (how a car works) I'd be considered just as stupid by someone who does actually know!

jugglingsatsumas · 15/05/2018 18:02

We went to a farm with the kids and they let everyone have a go at milking the (obviously) female cows. One woman asked how they stopped the cows getting pregnant - she thought that some of the cows were male cows which happened to give milk. Even the kids were puzzled at that one!

Justfivemoreminutesplease · 15/05/2018 18:04

Oh god - I have to confess I get really confused re lions and tigers and have to really think about it before I open my mouth Blush
I took DD to London Zoo and we admired the tigers and then walked over to the lions and then it dawned on me that the lions were lions and the males had the big manes.
I won’t confess to what I do for a living but I’m in my mid 40’s and have two degrees (but clearly not in zoology)

ProzacAndWine · 15/05/2018 18:04

Hmm. When learning English (as a foreign language, not in the UK), we were decidedly taught that in English all cats must be referred as females and all dogs as males, regardless of their sex. I never took believed the teacher as it sounded stupid and haven't really found that to be true! Maybe she had got this idea from someone who thought all cats were actually female...

ProzacAndWine · 15/05/2018 18:05

Hmm apparently she didn't do a great job actually teaching me English, either... /wonders off mumbling

Snowysky20009 · 15/05/2018 18:06

I have a degree and post grad, but didn't know until I was about 30 that when a hen laid an 'unfertilised egg' it was basically their 'period' (comparing it to a human). Obvious once I was told Blush

Angie169 · 15/05/2018 18:07

Yes egg shells are soft , if you are very quick and gentle as soon as a egg is laid you can make it almost cube shaped.
I did this with the ducks eggs at a farm that I worked on as a kid . it baffled the buggery out of my Dm & DD Grin

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/05/2018 18:07

Well as lions live in Africa and tigers don't (in the wild) how does he think they mate
As PP said, the Asiatic Lion territory overlaps with Tiger territory in India but that’s not well known so I can’t imagine his confusion stems from that. Did he learn about Ligers and Tigons somewhere along the line when he was young and just got mixed up?

NoodlesLivesHere · 15/05/2018 18:09

Aviator I want to berate that teacher on behalf your DC. I'd have thought that was a really clever play on words for a child.

Vinorosso74 · 15/05/2018 18:09

A friend of mine didn't think poodles were a breed of dog. She thought there were cats, dogs and poodles until she was about 18.....

AviatorShades · 15/05/2018 18:11

Food. The skin on a proper rice pudding, golden brown and flavoured with nutmeg?

My dad told me that children weren't allowed to eat it cos our stomachs weren't developed enough and it would make us very, very sick.So he'd tell me when I was grown up enough.

Still waiting Dad Shock[Grin

InsomniacAnonymous · 15/05/2018 18:14

JustAWestcountryGirl how could you be in your 20s before discovering there are no blind drivers? I don't understand. How could there be? Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2018 18:14

My Dh always though male and female starlings were to different types of birds

Eh? I thought adult starlings all looked the same?

AviatorShades · 15/05/2018 18:14

Noodles that was a direct quote from the book and yes, I've remembered it all these years later.Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2018 18:16

Well, maybe if their guide dog helped....

Cataline · 15/05/2018 18:21

Bearhunter09 · 15/05/2018 18:22

I just told my 5 year old what your DH said he laughed and said that’s the silliest thing he’s ever heard

madeyemoodysmum · 15/05/2018 18:25

tomhardy · 15/05/2018 18:26

Swanlings sounds like something my mum would have told us.

The blind drivers/roundabouts one is inspired. Might get her to try that one on my nephews. See how long it takes them to twig.

Notreallyhappy · 15/05/2018 18:30
