to wonder if bank staff can access your accounts?

Of their own accord (not assisting you in any capacity)?

My ex now works at my main bank, as far as I know at a customer call centre and not in branch. He’s quite obsessive and knows I bank with this company. I’m concerned that he could search for my account and bring up my details, including my new contact information/address alongside my financial information (which would also show him where I now work and my salary.)

Please tell me I’m being silly and he cannot simply access my account without my authorisation?

I expect he could but it would be a scalable offence to.

gettingtherequickly · 14/05/2018 07:16

Sackable!

CryptoFascist · 14/05/2018 07:16

Sorry to tell you this but he could access your information without a reason. People aren't supposed to but having worked as a cashier myself I can't deny I've seen it happen.

ny20005 · 14/05/2018 07:16

They can but it's a sackable offence & audit would prove they'd accessed it

I'd just move banks but that won't stop your address showing on your records

rodstewartsmerkin · 14/05/2018 07:17

In theory yes they can but I doubt he would as he’d probably be sacked.

Angrybird345 · 14/05/2018 07:17

Of course he could.... might be worth flagging with the bank.

Whisky2014 · 14/05/2018 07:19

Yes they can as i know someone who did.

knockknockknock · 14/05/2018 07:19

Yes he can but as others said it would be sackable. Having worked in a bank for years the chances of it ever coming to light is very small.

Personally I'd be swapping banks very quickly!

I'd move banks. When I was younger I worked in a mortgage centre... people used to access celebrity accounts to see their info.

Soundsgood · 14/05/2018 07:19

I would change banks just to piss him off. You can get £150 from First Direct for minimal effort.

moominsmama · 14/05/2018 07:20

Just move banks...not worth you stressing over it

Violetroselily · 14/05/2018 07:20

He can do, but shouldn’t.

And whilst it’s a sackable offence if he got caught, it’s also quite likely that he could go under the radar. There’s probably only a small % if staff access that is audited each day, e.g. automatic detection of staff looking at their own accounts, but in reality it can and does happen.

Tuckingfypo · 14/05/2018 07:20

Yep he could, although as PP have said he could get sacked. If your banks systems are anything like mine, anytime account info is entered the colleague will leave a trail with their name and the exact date and time they entered the account.

Turnocks34 · 14/05/2018 07:20

Yes he could. He wouldn’t be allowed to without being asked but he technically would be able too. I used to work for a bank and would have been able to do this easily. Never did.

Longdistance · 14/05/2018 07:22

Move banks.

I worked for a building society and it was a sackable offence to access friend/relatives accounts.

It’s really easy to move banks, as all your dd move with the account.

DrAdmin · 14/05/2018 07:24

Yes he can. Change banks

SporadicSpartacus · 14/05/2018 07:31

If your bank is anything like the one I work for - if you’re authorised to view accounts for business purposes, you can view any account you like. Sometimes you have to tick that you have customer consent but in theory there’s nothing to stop someone saying they do when they don’t.

To do so without a legitimate business reason would be gross misconduct, though. Also I’m pretty sure GDPR beefs up the protections around when/why data can be processed, so bank will want to be all over their data security for at least the next few months, given the size of the GDPR fines.

Sorry you have a creepy ex.

ny20005 · 14/05/2018 07:32

On the plus side - if you've changed address, he may not be able to find your details

In my bank you need account details or surname & postcode

lhastingsmua · 14/05/2018 07:33

Oh annoying! I was hoping they would have to verify security information before accessing accounts

The bank in question is Barclays if anyone has any information? I just asked Barclays via live chat and the adviser was adamant that he couldn’t under any circumstances but I guess not. I will ring them soon and express my concerns

I have accounts with other banks so can transfer my salary and direct debits over, but it’s just that I have an ISA with Barclays and a credit card so annoying to move absolutely everything.

You're braver than me, using the live chat.
It could have been him that was talking to you!

Gilead · 14/05/2018 07:37

DS was a bank manager. He says the chap on the phone is talking nonsense. Your account can be accessed without any effort whatsoever.

Thehop · 14/05/2018 07:39

I worked in a bank call centre

Yes he can look. With no passwords needed, very easily.

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 14/05/2018 07:39

100% and Barclays specifically. I was a temp there as a student and everyone used to look up their friends / people they know bank information.

NewYearNewMe18 · 14/05/2018 07:40

Someone who worked for a bank (again not in a branch) told me he could access any bank account, not just ones with his bank.

That's not true.

But banks do exchange information - when you got to a NW ATM with your Lloyds card, it shows you the balance

OP a Barclaycard is a different holding company to Barclays Bank. Those two are not interchangeable.
