So I've begun a course and I want to not end up on crime watch and I'm not sure what's legal or just cheeky fuckery

OP posts:
Crispbutty · 13/05/2018 21:45

I just googled what a crematorium does and it says they dispose the day after the funeral usually so that could well be worth asking them.

Talia99 · 13/05/2018 21:47

How about posting on freecycle for your area?

betterbemoreorganised · 13/05/2018 21:48

Freecycle or freeagle with an explanation about why you need the flowers

TaighNamGastaOrt · 13/05/2018 21:48

In our local graveyard, there's a compost bin next to the fence-you can often find thrown out flowers there-some are dead but some are still blooming? what about wildflowers too?

Mrscog · 13/05/2018 21:49

I wouldn’t think it was cheeky to ask me - I have some nice foliage in my garden - and some I’d be pleased to have gone (ivy!).

I would be hacked off if someone just took them!

ineedamoreadultieradult · 13/05/2018 21:49

Ask on your local Facebook pages, selling pages, community pages etc. I know if I did that in my area I would get lots of helpful responses.

MoreCheerfulMonica · 13/05/2018 21:54

Get in touch with your local horticultural society and ask whether any keen gardeners there could let you have flowers and foliage.

halesie · 13/05/2018 21:56

Could you volunteer to help with flower arrangements at a local church? There are some pretty impressive arrangers around and they might just help teach you and poss let you take any unused flowers with you at the end too.

deste · 13/05/2018 21:57

I second the supermarkets. I used to buy bunches for 60p sometimes for the out of date flowers.

CaptainBrickbeard · 13/05/2018 21:58

I’ve spent a lot of money and time on my garden and couldn’t afford to just replace it if someone helped themselves to my flowers. I don’t think it’s ok at all.

acsec · 13/05/2018 22:00

I know someone who has a criminal damage charge for picking daffodils from a grass verge. It obviously doesn't say what it's for when they have a DNS check so they had some trouble getting jobs!

Id happily give you foliage from my garden, obviously depending where you are!

I reckon you could ask supermarkets at the end of the day if they could reduce the already reduced flowers - I've bought some lovely bouquets for 10p for my class to do still life drawing before.

Scentofwater · 13/05/2018 22:01

If someone knocked at my door and nicely offered to weed my garden in exchange for flowers and foliage for a floristry course I’d probably just give you some.

You’d probably need a few houses worth, I’d not let you take all my flowers, they take a lot of effort to grow. Later in the season you’ll be able to get loads of sweet peas, but right now it’s a bit lean.

If I caught you sneaking around the garden I’d be out there seeing you out the gate with my fork, or my axe if you’d been daft enough to pick my peonies. Tbh most gardening equipment looks scary in a medieval way now I think about it.

Do you not have any countryside within reach? Right now there’s loads of wild flowers in the hedgerows. If you only take a few little bits from each plant, and only from a few plants in each patch it won’t affect their ability to grow and reproduce. But only take a little of what is plentiful, never take anything that looks rare/ unusual.

mrsFruitLoops · 13/05/2018 22:01

Find a local facebook page, explain you are doing a course, ask if anyone has any flowers they could let you have.... people have asked for a lot more on our fb page.

there's some lovely wildflowers around.....we have LOADS of forget me nots on our dirt track road!!! and some little white flowers too. we get some big foxgloves too later in the year.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 13/05/2018 22:01

Please don’t take from parks, they’ve been put there for EVERYONE’S enjoyment, not the convenience of a trainee florist who didn’t realise they’d have to provide their own flowers. Ditto the countryside if you’re near it, it’s an ecosystem not a pick’n’mix.

Do I...snip and run?

Holy actual fuck. Anyone stealing from gardens deserves everything they get.

OurMiracle1106 · 13/05/2018 22:03

Tesco’s and Asda etc do their bunches for pence when they are due to be thrown is that an option?

toriatoriatoria · 13/05/2018 22:03

I also think supermarkets at the end of the day would be a good bet.

Taking from a park isn't really on, the flowers are for everyone to enjoy.

letsdolunch321 · 13/05/2018 22:06

Hmmmm Confused

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 13/05/2018 22:06

You could post on freegle/freecycle/local facebay free sites asking if anyone would mind donating some to you for your course.

FASH84 · 13/05/2018 22:08

Make a leaflet and post through letterboxes offering weeding/light gardening services in return for flowers and foliage, a lot of older people might like that

SpikyCoconut · 13/05/2018 22:09

I think wildflowers would be your best bet along with asking on fb. Could you grow some in a mini greenhouse insidefor future? Seeds can be very cheap.

Em308 · 13/05/2018 22:14

I'm presuming it's a floristry / flower arranging course you're doing? Maybe offer the completed arrangement to anyone willing to offer flowers /foliage from their garden? I would be happy with that swap.

WishTheGroundWouldSwallowMeUp · 13/05/2018 22:14

arrghhh some wild flowers are protected and endangered.

ChasedByBees · 13/05/2018 22:20

There’s a guide here:

www.theguardian.com/law/2011/mar/16/rules-picking-wild-flowers

I’m surprised by the four Fs part as I thought picking wildflowers was against the countryside code. Some flowers are protected and you absolutely could be arrested if you collect them. Would you know how to tell?

bunbunny · 13/05/2018 22:21

Have you spoken to the tutor and asked if s/he has any suggestions?

Is there a local gardening college that you could ring up and ask if they have any?

Ask on a local mum to mum facebook group or similar type of group locally?

Any local old age homes that have nice gardens that you could ask if you could take a few if you could return them all in an arrangement or two?

See if there's a local gardener's group that you could put in a request to?

TheAntiBoop · 13/05/2018 22:21

Local offices/banks often get rid of their flower displays at the end of the week - you could also ask around if they want help disposing of them!
