Or was the police officer rude

There is a local 10k race in my nearest town, I forgot about this and popped to the shops. It appeared that most people had finished the race and instead of road closures the police were stopping traffic so the runners could pass to get to the end of race - all fine.

On my way home, the police stopped the traffic so one runner could cross. Once she had crossed the road the police officers were talking together and dropped their hands so I assumed I could start to go. I moved my car an inch - literally an inch- before one of the police stood in the middle of the road mouthing 'can you actually not see me, I'm stood here etc' rolling her eyes and waving her arms about. No one else crossed and then she stepped to the side and waved me through.

AIBU to think that she was really rude and there was no need for this?

For all you know, the chat was a colleague letting her know something serous had happened, or to hold the road a bit longer because more runners were coming through, or asking her where she got her nail varnish from.

The reality is that you were required to wait until the officer permitted you through, and you failed to abide by the rules of the road.

Believe you me, if every officer got £1 for dealing with someone who thought they knew better, paid their wages, just needed to nip down a closed road, demanded an explanation of what has happened in their neighbours house or tried to make drunken small talk with them, they'd all be millionaires.

Charolais · 13/05/2018 12:58

I think it is awful the police officer said she was ‘stood’ there. How ignorant. I heard a female cop shouting "get down on the floor” when they were clearly outside and standing on the ground.

boywiththebrokensmile2 · 13/05/2018 12:58

nope, not bitter- I did not really want it anyway, I just could not think of what else to do and my heart wasn't really in it, I had applied for nursing too and got called for 2nd stage interviews but I got into the course I had really wanted on the same day[all this many years ago] and working in that field since. Even now I know nursing for me would have being a terrible mistake.

And no, I have 0 bitterness as I said, you sound like you are trying to deflect from my points and go down the psychological analysis route that so often happens on mn. I simply made an observation that law enforcement's behaviour towards the public can sometimes be ott and rude. That has nothing to do with me not becoming one.

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 13/05/2018 13:00

Hardly creating drama. You are human and when the public do stupid things you react. I will have said similar.

Notice the Wink it was a tongue in cheek comment. I very much doubt the police officer decided to spice up her shift via eye rolling at random drivers Grin

Nicknacky · 13/05/2018 13:03

Whoops zibbidi I missed your tone! Sorry x

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 13/05/2018 13:06

Nor worries nicky!

agedknees · 13/05/2018 13:17

You where the rude one driving at a police officer.

unfortunateevents · 13/05/2018 13:20

So they were a "long way away" but noticed you move "literally and inch"? Bit of a contradiction there?

Misericord · 13/05/2018 13:21

YABVU

Sirzy · 13/05/2018 13:22

As a runner I have seen police and Marshall’s get some awful abuse and treatment from impatient drivers. The best was the one who continued driving even when the policeman was literally hitting her window to tell her to stop. Sadly I couldn’t stop long enough to see what happened to her!

MissDuke · 13/05/2018 13:28

It is pretty obvious that this didn't happen exactly as described. If you were as far away from them as you claim, then one inch of driving forward would not have been noticed, you wouldn't have saw the eye rolling and definitely couldn't accurately lip read an entire sentence. Of course you don't move forward until indicated to do so. Must be very frustrating for the police when drivers are so impatient.

Police Officers are human.
Some PO’s are fabulous, have amazing people skills, excellent judgement, are empathic and able to employ common sense. Others are complete arses who love the idea of having a little bit of power. It’s a sliding scale.
The PO you encountered today seems ( to me) to have been a bit of a cock 😂
From what you’ve described, inching forward tentatively would have been my response too in that situation. I’m assuming you didn’t ‘drive at the PO’ as some are claiming...from what you’ve said she sounds very unprofessional

That1950sMum · 13/05/2018 13:47

You made a mistake and she called you out on it. She wasn't rude, she was doing her job which you were making more difficult.

Luisa27 · 13/05/2018 13:48

Maybe the Officer should have kept her eyes on the traffic - ensuring drivers were fully aware of her instructions with hand movements - and devoting 100% of her concentration on the task she was being paid to do - not yakking away to colleagues, after all she was on duty.

scurryfunge · 13/05/2018 13:52

Were you there Luisa?

Luisa27 · 13/05/2018 13:54

No - were you @Funge?

BumpowderSneezeonAndSnot · 13/05/2018 13:54

You're in the wrong. As others have pointed out you wait to be told it's clear before advancing

Luisa27 · 13/05/2018 13:55

If you were - apologies Flowers
If not - what’s your point?

scurryfunge · 13/05/2018 13:55

Just wondering how you know what the officer was doing, what they were talking about and what they could see?

higgyyellow · 13/05/2018 13:57

They were a long way away.

How the fuck were you able to lip read from a long way away Hmm

Luisa27 · 13/05/2018 14:01

I’ve given My OPINION - which is what we’re all doing.
No one can categorically say who is right and who is wrong - unless we were there of course (Fungy maybe?) - and possess detailed knowledge of traffic laws and acceptable behaviour of on-duty police officers - it’s all subjective.

scurryfunge · 13/05/2018 14:04

So why make the assumption then that she wasn't concentrating, etc as per your previous post?

Mississippilessly · 13/05/2018 14:04

That's quite some lip-reading talent you have there OP.
