To hate The Sunday Times Rich List

It's the only time the magazine goes straight into the recycling.
Apart from those on it or who aspire to be on it, who is it for? I find it pretty distasteful.

What's wrong with aspiring to be in it?

Whenwillwe3meetagain · 13/05/2018 14:37

In a time of food banks I think an aspiration to be wealthy enough to appear on the list is an aspiration all too far. Nothing wrong with aspiring to be wealthy per se.

OP posts:
LifeBeginsAtGin · 13/05/2018 14:39

What's wrong with someone who is successful?

The80sweregreat · 13/05/2018 14:40

LBC had a phone in about this, it was food for thought.
A lot of people on that list have come from nothing - it would be good if they could share their tips and ' how they did it' with all of us, but not everyone has a business brain. i know i havent!
as long as they pay their taxes like everyone else.. thats what matters the most and treat their workers correctly and fairly, thats a list i wouldnt mind seeing from the employees point of view.

MrsJayy · 13/05/2018 14:40

To be totally fair people who need food banks are not reading The Times are they ? I agree it is vulgar though but you can'thide money and rich people love showing how rich they are.

AgentHannahWells · 13/05/2018 14:42

It seems like a celebration of greed... highlights what a shitty materialist society we are.

MrsFezziwig · 13/05/2018 14:42

I don’t think necessarily people do aspire to be on the list. A good proportion of rich people don’t want attention drawn to their wealth, and I wouldn’t have thought that the list is compiled by people on the list providing their details to journalists (happy to be proved wrong though).

AsAProfessionalFekko · 13/05/2018 14:42

I remember a while back a home invasion that ended up in the murder of an ex colleague - one of the men convicted had a copy of the list with potential targets marked. I'm not sure if the victim was on the list.

It makes me wonder of the people listed worry about kidnapping, burglaries, mugging...

Backingvocals · 13/05/2018 14:45

Most people who are on it definitely don’t want to be on it. The data is all put together without their involvement.

I agree it’s a bit funny but for instance I had never heard of Ineos before reading about it today so it’s also occasionally informative.

Creambun2 · 13/05/2018 14:46

The people on it need taxing vigorously. That would cool there arrogance.

MrsJayy · 13/05/2018 14:47

Oh that murder story is sinister

The80sweregreat · 13/05/2018 14:47

They clearly dont worry about it or have very good security i guess! they must agree to go on the list? i dont buy the Times so i dont know.

I used to envy the very rich, but as you age you tend not to, as long as there is enough to get by i am happy with a cup of tea and something good on TV to watch, they can keep their big homes and cars and wealth. I am sure a few on that list are not totally happy with life either.

GaryBarlowsTaxReturn · 13/05/2018 14:50

The list is a guesstimate. Plus not every wealthy person aspires to be on it. A close relative was on it one year and he was furious. He didn't want the attention; found it vulgar and tasteless.

Dropdeadfredra · 13/05/2018 14:59

I know someone on the list. They are a lovely family, totally private and are probably horrified to be on the list. They do a shedload of stuff for charity without advertising it at all. The family company is one of the most moral companies I know. They pay their staff well and act with integrity in their business transactions.

My friend has a normal car, dresses like she has just been walking the dogs and is just a generally nice, down to earth person.

I live in a rundown ex council house. I'm skint. She doesn't consider herself any better than me. The only time her wealth is mentioned is when I take the piss out of her for it Grin

Alienspaceship · 13/05/2018 15:03

It’s crass journalism. As for the world on it, jobs am wealth has to come from somewhere you know. It’s all part of a society.

Alienspaceship · 13/05/2018 15:03

People not world Confused

SuperSuperSuper · 13/05/2018 15:05

It's vulgar. I wouldn't have bought The Times today had I realised. Let's hope HMRC have a good browse of it tomorrow.

Trilllllian · 13/05/2018 15:08

Once met one of the people who compiles this list. A lot of it is research and guesswork - seona fo then will tell and some won’t

The80sweregreat · 13/05/2018 15:09

Super, the HMRC wont be bothered about them, too busy chasing the normal man in the street i would imagine., a lot are protected by very good accountants or have off shore affairs, which are legal but still loopholes to gain more money.

Alienspaceship · 13/05/2018 15:12

Why the hatred? What would you prefer, communism? I don’t aspire to excessive wealth myself so I’m glad that other people do because along the way they provide jobs and contribute to the economy. Confused

Westfacing · 13/05/2018 15:14

I'd take some of the figures with a pinch of salt.

About 15 years ago a customer of my now ex-H was on the list - at the same time his cheques were forever bouncing and years later I read in a different section of The Sunday Times how he had debts of some 10s of millions of pounds.

All smoke and mirrors.

The80sweregreat · 13/05/2018 15:15

alien , i do agree , we need the mix of people like this to keep the economy moving, its when they dont pay their way it gets sticky.
a lot do i am sure, they are honest and hard working and employ people and do all the right things and their employees love them etc etc, but a lot don't i bet.

user1494050295 · 13/05/2018 15:16

I work with a lot of philanthropists. I get quite inspired by their humanity and generosity to both uk charities and abroad. To note: the billionaires tend to be more lovely and the nouveau rich are def more gauche.

Creambun2 · 13/05/2018 15:22

Wealthy individuals who shit on about philanthropy and charity are usually giving money for tax reasons.

The80sweregreat · 13/05/2018 15:32

Cream - probably. It’s hard to say for sure but usually ( some) people don’t do anything unless there’s something in it for them. Rich or poor.
