To hate The Sunday Times Rich List

It's the only time the magazine goes straight into the recycling.
Apart from those on it or who aspire to be on it, who is it for? I find it pretty distasteful.

Would be interesting to see if the circulation drops or rises for this issue. I have a subscription so pay for it anyway. If I didn't I doubt I would have bought it today.

Asset rich money poor isn’t new - bankruptcy can be absorbed by a family with money already - not so for the little man who will end up with the bailiffs at the door. There will always be old money.

@milliemolliemou yes I did mean charities might be interested in targeting these individuals. I might be way off the mark as I’m just guessing but I’d think it would be a good way for the fundraising folks to identify good patrons or people to target for expensive tables at events etc!

Creambun2 always makes me think of this:

It's all guesswork. I used to work for someone on the richlist. His business had loans and there wasn't the wealth assumed on the list.

AlfredDaButtler · 13/05/2018 19:57

If I didn't I doubt I would have bought it today.

I wouldn't not buy it, I'd still want to read the rest of the paper, regardless of whether I was interested in the Rich List or not.

Pa1oma · 13/05/2018 20:13

I know about 8 people on it and they have no choice in the matter. None are attention-seekers at all. They may be super-wealthy but they have also created thousands of jobs and opportunities for others along the way. There are 3 on it that we have known for over 20 years and they are very modest and normal men.

FaFoutis · 13/05/2018 20:14

YANBU. What is it even for? It is vile.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/05/2018 20:17

I don't give a flying rat's arse about the Rich List. It goes staring into the recycling bin.

It's a bloody waste of paper and time. I honestly don't know why people read the bloody thing.

I do not buy into the whole ' was really poor and now really rich' thing to be honest as someone, somewhere , helped them with money or advice.

maybe i am an old cynic, but Lord sugar got that 100 and his van from someone ( he may have worked hard, but he still had to have some kind of backing to get his business going back in the day and i bet his extended family were not all poor either ) and Dolly Parton's uncle had a lot more money than her parents and saw her potential and helped out ( i watched a documentary on her and though ' ahh..thats how/ etc) you need to drill down to the bones, but real success stories are not always what they seem i bet, you often need a bit of a leg or heads up from somewhere.
Only one i can believe is J K Rowling as a pad and pen are pennies to buy , but she wasn't starting out in business which is a whole different ball game.

still not envious of extreme wealth though, it doesnt always bring happiness.

I don't really have an opinion on whether it's printed or not. The people listed are in a parallel universe to me anyway. How much even is a billion?! I can't even visualise it and the ones at the top have several! A mere few hundred million puts you down the bottom. I'm not sure what the point in it is to be honest. Jamie Oliver didn't make the grade this year! Wink
