Aibu about emptying the dishwasher

This really frustrates me and I don’t need think iabu but maybe I am.

If you are emptying the dishwasher shouldn’t you also put anything that’s accumulated whilst it’s been on in to it?

My family seem to think otherwise and leave anything in the sink rather than load it.

Two separate tasks. I can see your point, but it's not an essential.

Fairylea · 13/05/2018 08:25

For our house it’s the same task- you empty and then fill it. No one (including my 14 year old dd) would do any different!

ThereIsAlwaysDrama · 13/05/2018 08:26

YANBU!!!

8FencingWire · 13/05/2018 08:26

Having spent many years without a dishwasher, loading and unloading is now very therapeutic for me, I’d go as far as to say I love it.

I made mine wash by hand and dry what’s left on the side. Now they’re fighting with me to load/unload and worship the dishwasher.
Try that, they’ll appreciate the 2 minutes loading more, afger they’ve spent 15 minutes at the sink 😂

Kim82 · 13/05/2018 08:27

I agree with you. Once it’s been emptied you put any dishes waiting to be cleaned into it. Saves dirty dishes sitting around the kitchen making it look messy.

Skiiltan · 13/05/2018 08:31

The trouble is... if you share a dishwasher with a Mumsnetter you can never win in this situation. Either you'll get blasted for not putting stuff in the dishwasher or you'll get ridiculed for not putting it exactly where the MNer would have put it.

kmc1111 · 13/05/2018 08:33

I wait til I have enough to put it on again. If I put things in in dribs and drabs I just end up having to rearrange everything. I guess it depends what you’re putting in there though. I always end up with some awkward sized things that everything else has to work around.

NeeChee · 13/05/2018 08:40

DP never even empties the dishwasher, or puts anything in it either. DSS is as bad, I've tried to hint by leaving it open with a clear gap for his plate, but he'll still walk past it and dump it on the corner of the sink. I have to actually say something.
I find it really irksome how everyone leaves dirty dishes either in the sink or on the edge of the draining board. To me, that's a place for clean stuff, and it looks so messy (not that our kitchen is tidy by any means), but it really annoys me!
People do it at work too, just pile their dirty dishes in the sink so no-one else can use it. And I refuse to wash their stuff for them.

CocoaGin · 13/05/2018 08:45

We've got a very unique dishwasher. Apparently it's magic coded so that only my hands can open it Hmm

Most mornings I come down and there is a mountain of stuff on the side even though the dishwasher is empty because I've done it last thing before going to bed to AVOID coming down to a mountain of shit on the side.

Dieu · 13/05/2018 08:46

YANBU ... but try telling my teenager that! Hmm

LoveBeingAMum555 · 13/05/2018 08:50

Yes, DW loaded as you go. What really really annoys me is people making a cup of tea and throwing the tea spoon in the sink rather than putting them in the dishwasher (which is next to the sink). So I go to use the sink and there are 12 teaspoons to fish out which creates work.

TheRoadLessRocky · 13/05/2018 08:50

I try to tell them the objective is not 'loading or unloading' it is 'tidying the kitchen'. Therefore, whatever needs to ve done to make the sink, drainer and benches clean and tidy. I find this approach better otherwise they (all older teens/young adults) do only the very specific chore they've been given e.g. only just unload.

So yes, yanbu, the few things should be added otherwise they will just sit there making the sink full & dirty until the next loading the next evening.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 13/05/2018 08:52

I read a genius tip on MN: have 2 dishwashers! It wouldn't even had occurred to me until I read the thread about it.

birdonawire1 · 13/05/2018 09:01

I empty it in the morning and load all the plates etc which are neatly stacked on the side, and wipe the surfaces. As other cups and plates appear they get loaded in and it’s started when it’s full.

MumW · 13/05/2018 09:06

No, not unique. Mine seems to have the same feature.Wink

BPG20 · 13/05/2018 09:08

YANBU. It is one task, entitled "doing the dishwasher". This encompasses everything that can possibly need doing - emptying if clean, loading dirty dishes into it, and cleaning out any bits of food that people hadn't scraped off of their plates...

TheFlannelsAreBreeding · 13/05/2018 09:10

Definitely! Our dishwasher takes ages to run (very eco, but means there's always some dirties on the side before it finishes). So emptying the dishwasher involves dealing with those, and also making sure the things that come out are clean and hand washing them if not (rather than leaving them in there to magically get clean the second / third / fourth time around).

TERFragetteCity · 13/05/2018 09:11

My family seem to think otherwise and leave anything in the sink rather than load it.

Stop doing it for them.

Dinnerisburnt · 13/05/2018 09:13

Same in my house, I also have an ant problem that are currently having a party over the dishes stacked up on the counter.

t3rr3gl35 · 13/05/2018 09:27

I came up with a solution this week to the dishes on the side waiting on the dishwasher being emptied problem - 2 dishwashers! One in use, another being filled. I thought it was genius, my DH thought it slightly batty.

We already have 2 washing machines (one for "dirty" and another for normal wash), so I might push the case for the second dishwasher. Grin

t3rr3gl35 · 13/05/2018 09:30

Crossposted with ikeepaforkinmypurse. Will search for that thread. Glad I'm not a lone voice who thinks it's a great idea!

RemainOptimistic · 13/05/2018 09:38

Re washing stuff because the eco wash failed to clean them is not very eco.

Just use a proper wash and get it over with Grin

Loading and unloading are two separate tasks here. I like the idea of a single task entitled clear down the kitchen though!

Oldraver · 13/05/2018 09:44

Isn't this why you unload a dishwasher, to put the next lot in ?

Maelstrop · 13/05/2018 09:47

I empty and put anything in that’s hanging about. I agree, that is the point.

vdbfamily · 13/05/2018 09:48

My dishwasher bugbear is when whoever emptied it has just stacked the clean things in piles beside it rather than put them away! Drives me nuts.
