Aibu about emptying the dishwasher

This really frustrates me and I don’t need think iabu but maybe I am.

If you are emptying the dishwasher shouldn’t you also put anything that’s accumulated whilst it’s been on in to it?

My family seem to think otherwise and leave anything in the sink rather than load it.

I handwash things while the dishwasher is on because a pile of dirty crocks annoys me. But for those less irritable than me, yes you should put dirty stuff in when you've emptied the clean stuff, it's called 'doing the dishwasher.'

My friend had the most enormous fight with her MIL over a dishwasher. The repercussions went on for years and it got dredged up at every drunken family occasion to the point where bets were taken over whether it would be mentioned before or after the Queen's speech on Christmas day.

@RemainOptimistic It doesn't have a non eco setting! When it breaks, I'm going for one that does, but for now I'm stuck with the long cycle and slight crapness.

CocoaGin · 13/05/2018 10:04

When we redo our kitchen, I'm getting one of those split level dishwashers. So you can have one bit on, and still load into the other. Genius.

DH is fussy about the way it is loaded, so if I put anything in it, he will tut and do it his way (so I just let him crack on)

I'm happy to unload and put away. There's very few dishes that accumulate during the hour the dishwasher is on, easy to hand wash them.

SluttyButty · 13/05/2018 10:27

@CocoaGin I have the same brand as dishwasher that will only open with my hands. They should really stop selling them.

That dishwasher link looks genius, I needs me one of those but don't really have a spare £1000 lying around Wink

The dishwasher is only allowed to be run after a meal in our house. No-one is allowed to create any more dirty dishes until it has finished and been emptied.

YABU for leaving dirty dishes to be fished out the sink - stacked up on the side with the dirt getting dried in is preferable to slimy unwashed detritus cluttering up the sink. (marginally)

SecretIsland · 13/05/2018 10:43

I can't bear filling the dishwasher in dribs and drabs...it always turns out more of a pita because you end up rearranging everything anyway.

The rule here is you take your plate/cup/whatever out, empty any food into the food bin, rinse under the tap and then leave it on the side. Then the dishwasher gets filled when there's enough for a load.

This is the system we have as well. If I put anything on the dishwasher, DP tuts and moves it. Even if it's a plate in the plate rack section Hmm. So I leave him a nice empty dishwasher and a pile of stuff to put in it.

Our dishwasher goes on every night before we go to bed. Whoever has time empties it in the morning and we load it as we go through the day and put it on again at night. Absolutely hate having dishes lying around all day. Also when I'm cooking tea at night I put things in as I've finished with them so there's not as much to clean up after!

Moominfan · 13/05/2018 11:03

Adult me would want to get it all done and out the way. Child/teenage me wants to get the job over with as quickly as possible with as little effort as possible

PrimalLass · 13/05/2018 11:12

I pile it all in the sink then load it at once.

NeeChee · 14/05/2018 06:48

@PrimalLass that would really irritate me lol. I have to stack things neatly on the worktop at the side of the sink (it's too small to be useful for anything else).
Before we had the dishwasher, I got mad at DP for piling the sink completely full WHILE I was running the water to wash it all. How is that helping?!

MissMooMoo · 14/05/2018 09:19

Same problem at my house.
Just me DH and baby DS so for now its my DH who doesn't reload.
Whomever said that the solution is to stop doing it for them doesn't seem to realise that won't solve the problem.
If I don't load it the nobody will and we will have counter tops and sink full of dirty dishes which I will equally be annoyed about.
Its a losing battle as my DH doesn't mind the above

Ticketsfrom · 14/05/2018 09:20

YANBU! It’s one job in our house. I can’t imagine leaving a sink full of dishes when there’s room in the dishwasher...

PrimalLass · 16/05/2018 13:55

I have one of those big Ikea double sinks. If it is stacked in the sink then no one can see it from the window Grin

And It means I know what is there and can load the dishwasher all at once.

pigmcpigface · 16/05/2018 13:58

YANBU Sorting the dishwasher clearly involves restacking it once empty. It takes, like, 2 minutes.

I would be tempted to make a recalcitrant child wash everything up by hand and see how they like it! That's what we had to do growing up!!

TroubledLichen · 16/05/2018 13:58

You need a second dishwasher so you can stack that whilst the first one is running. But in the absence of that YANBU, that would annoy the hell out of me!
