AIBU To despair at "DH's" utter stupidity sometimes.....

DH can be a bit "woo" and likes to give DS (22 months) his version of "sensory" experiences sometimes (normally involving digging in the ground with bare hands, oooooh let's throw leaves in the air, let's see how far we can splash the water etc) mainly harmless but sometimes ill though out.

He surpassed himself at 6 o'clock this evening though with a "lets do different smells" game. It started with the spice rack and progressed to giving DS a teaspoon of ground coffee to sniff (not Maxwell House, cafetiere strong French roast stuff). DS basically stuffed it in his mouth without so much as a shudder. He actually said - "More coffee?" afterwards.

Its now almost 2 hours post bedtime, there is basically toddler stream of consciousness coming from DS's upstairs in his cot. We are on repetition fuck knows of Old MacDonald and I don't know how many times I've heard "bouncy, bouncy, BOUNCY!!!!!" coming from upstairs.
I'm lucky in that he is not crying, on the contrary he is full of fucking happiness at the moment.

My husband has to work from home this evening so it's just me and a small child on his first experience of caffeine. AIBU think that my DH is a massive fucking TWAT?

The sensory experience is a lovely idea but yes, what on earth was he thinking letting your dd eat the coffee! I guess you’re getting a looong lie in tomorrow?

DaanSaaf · 12/05/2018 21:39

Sorry, I laughed Grin

NewYearNewMe18 · 12/05/2018 21:39

That wouldn't give a caffeine high.

Haggisfish · 12/05/2018 21:40

That’s hilarious. I’m with dh tbh!

Tiredmum100 · 12/05/2018 21:41

Sorry I just laughed too. YANBU.

chicken75 · 12/05/2018 21:43

Agree with New year 🙄

ForceItDown · 12/05/2018 21:44

That wouldn't give a caffeine high.

Oh Yes it would

kitkatsky · 12/05/2018 21:44

I'm so sorry but I'm doubled over laughing!

IHeartKingThistle · 12/05/2018 21:45

Oh I just LOLed. I'm sure you will too, in years to come. In the meantime, wine?

BlueTrousers · 12/05/2018 21:45

Sensory experiences are very beneficial for children
I also don’t think that’s what woo means

However- I laughed too Grin

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 12/05/2018 21:46

I gave my toddler coffee cake once by accident. Poor kid was still awake at 11pm when usually a strict 7pm bedtime and was simultaneously so tired and wired he just couldn't settle!! Good luck!

Trialsmum · 12/05/2018 21:47

Well it was certainly a sensory experience...

Bambamber · 12/05/2018 21:47

What's wrong with the sensory ideas he's coming up with? Sounds like they're having lots of fun together! Although I do agree he should have been more careful with the coffee

restingbemusedface · 12/05/2018 21:47

Why wouldn’t a spoonful of coffee give a caffeine high to a baby? Genuine question.

LittleMe03 · 12/05/2018 21:53

Well I think your DH is great with your DS in.... letting him experience sensory play etc. However I do understand your frustration.

But I am also laughing Grin

hidinginthenightgarden · 12/05/2018 21:55

Surely coffee consumed 15 hours ago would have left his system by now?

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/05/2018 21:56

Grin. Oops. Your dh broke the baby and sloped off to work.

YouDancin · 12/05/2018 21:58

Oh yes ... an utter utter large one Brew

MarthaArthur · 12/05/2018 21:58

"More coffee?" Grin

MarthaArthur · 12/05/2018 21:59

hidinginthegarden it was only consumed 3.5 hours ago

BlueTrousers · 12/05/2018 21:59

hiding 15 hours?? 4 hours

mooglycrunch · 12/05/2018 22:00

He is a brilliant dad - I just wonder sometimes if it's because he is still part child himself.

I love that they have fun together and he thinks creatively with him its just that sometimes it's not always thought through e.g digging in the ground in the park with no wet wipes to clean his hands after, jumping on the old sette in the spare room and not understanding why DS then wants to jump on the new sofa in the living room, teaching him to shout BOOBIES loudly in the bath, which he now shouts loudly EVERYWHERE.

I love him dearly but - fucking hell - sometimes I have to question what bloody planet he is on.

@chicken75 and @NewYearNewMe18
I'm 26, usually caffeine free so when I have a caffeinated tea any later than 6pm I am wired until gone midnight! (This isn't a placebo effect either I have accidently had caffeinated tea and only found out by investigating after disturbed sleep.)

Unless there is some specific reason for ground coffee not releasing caffeine when eaten then I am 100% sure it would give a caffeine high like this!

ohcecelia · 12/05/2018 22:01

Sorry, I laughed too! It sounds like his intentions are good, if sometimes slightly ill thought out 😂

RallyAnnie · 12/05/2018 22:01

When my daughter was about 18m old, she persuaded daddy to let her drink from his Frappuccino, because it looked like a milkshake. She went without a nap that afternoon and was positively strung out by bedtime. She had the wide-eyes look of someone who needs to sleep but can't
