Email (screenshot attached) received yesterday from primary school. Child confirms that this actually occurred on Friday (single use containers and all). AIBU to want an explanation from school because I’ve no idea how this is in any way beneficial to the children. Notwithstanding childhood obesity and plastic pollution issues.

That's a disgrace. You should complain. Promoting fast food like that is nuts.

greatbigwho · 12/05/2018 15:43

The food itself doesn't bother me, but I'd be complaining loudly about the polystyrene containers - as an aside, what fast food places use polystyrene now?

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/05/2018 15:43

Is there a salad bar? Surely Quorn nuggets needs to be an option and in cardboard would be better.

Eveforever · 12/05/2018 15:57

I also agree that the use of polystyrene containers is a really awful idea. The fact that the half term challenge was about plastic waste really makes you wonder what the school are thinking.

The food options are also really limited and unhealthy and, depending on how the chips are prepared, my vegan daughter couldn't eat anything from the menu. Some schools take biscuits from pack lunches, some promote fast food, where's the logic and balance?

lemonsunshinecake · 12/05/2018 15:59

Wouldn't bother me at all

Anasnake · 12/05/2018 16:03

This is bollocks

NoSquirrels · 12/05/2018 16:04

Couldn’t care less about the food but would be kicking off about the polystyrene containers- that’s crap.

Our school does it once a year in summer.

Fuckingeyeroll · 12/05/2018 16:10

This is definitely better off being a DM sad face article surely?

ineedaholidaynow · 12/05/2018 16:16

DS's secondary school has Junk Food Friday, every Friday, but serves in normal plates.

His primary school always had a version of fish and chips (veggie options always available) on Friday. Some days it would be fish fingers, others fish cakes. They also did a salmon thing, can't remember what it was called. Most children hated the salmon, all apart from DS. So he would have a plate piled high with salmon and no chips, as he wasn't too keen on the school chips Grin

I wouldn't be too impressed with the disposable containers.

SecretIsland · 12/05/2018 16:20

That's rubbish op. I'd raise it with the school.

It's not so much the food - one meal of the week being chicken/burger and chips is fine. But advertising that they'll be served in polystyrene like that's a great thing - wtf.

Willow2017 · 12/05/2018 16:22

Mip Erm, fish?

Fish is a vegetable? Who knew? Grin

MumofBoysx2 · 12/05/2018 16:22

If they're healthy and they don't put too much salt in, and offer them with veg it's OK as a treat but the polystyrene trays are a big no!

bellsbuss · 12/05/2018 16:25

Our primary school has fish finger Friday every week. It doesn't bother me as it's the only day that they serve chips and the rest of the week it's a balanced healthy diet

BikeRunSki · 12/05/2018 16:29

I would challenge the Head on the issue of the single-use containers, particularly with respect to the halt term challenge. If they really want to go ahead with Fast Food Friday, they need to at least source some paper based, recyclable containers.

mavismcruet · 12/05/2018 16:39

Some schools are so narrow minded/short sighted. Why promote the use of single use plastics as an exciting thing?

My dcs school have become a single use plastic free school. The kids are like mini-eco warriors and have become really passionate about stopping the use of single use plastics. That is the way to change things for the better. Not perpetuating and promoting it.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/05/2018 16:51

Sounds lovely, but would rather them serve on plates or cardboard containers, due to the environment.

NameChangeCuzImAHorriblePerson · 12/05/2018 16:52

This doesn't make any sense, it's almost as if they're touting it as something to be incredibly proud of. Aren't they going against all recommendations of a) no fast food b) no plastic waste? Are they on Crack? I read it and thought it was satirical!

PositivelyPERF · 12/05/2018 16:55

This is bollocks eww, I thought it was fish! 😬

MipMipMip · 12/05/2018 23:01

Cardboard isn't great either - if it gets grease on it can't be recycled, at least around here. Sad

4GreenApples · 13/05/2018 08:14

Grease stained cardboard can’t be recycled where I live either.

But it is at least more biodegradable than polystyrene.

Amanduh · 13/05/2018 08:17

They’ll have a veggie option.
And veg to go with it.
The containers are the only problem

LARLARLAND · 13/05/2018 08:19

My DC school do fish and chips on Friday as a treat. It's the only day that they serve chips. I think they serve them on ordinary plates though.

drspouse · 13/05/2018 08:21

My DS school also has fish in some form, chips and a veggie option on a Friday. Plates though.
Sadly a lot of the takeaways near me still do polystyrene.

SuburbanRhonda · 13/05/2018 08:24

They’ll have a veggie option.

They should - but it’s not listed, so how can anyone know what it is, to decide whether to choose it?

I thought the days of “vegetarian option available” were long gone.

And agree it should “Junk Food Friday”.

Dieu · 13/05/2018 08:36

I'm starving after reading this!
