To think school are way out of line with this.

Email (screenshot attached) received yesterday from primary school. Child confirms that this actually occurred on Friday (single use containers and all). AIBU to want an explanation from school because I’ve no idea how this is in any way beneficial to the children. Notwithstanding childhood obesity and plastic pollution issues.

I wouldn’t be too worked up about the menu - provide the menu is healthier the rest of the week - but the single use containers aren’t right, they’re very wasteful and not something I’d expect a school to routinely use.

Kitkatmonster · 12/05/2018 14:44

My biggest issue is the plastic and sheer waste. It’s genuine. State school in the UK.

Who last half term asked the kids to do this:

All the "vegetarians" I know (about 5/6) eat fish too.

Then you don’t know any vegetarians.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 12/05/2018 14:48

I think you should query this - I mean, why? Why all of it? What's the thinking here?

OreoMini · 12/05/2018 14:50

Wouldn’t bother me

Bunchofdaffodils · 12/05/2018 14:52

Sorry, I’m just Shockthat in 2018 people who eat fish are calling themselves vegetarian!
And I agree op, the disposable containers are totally unnecessary and irresponsible.

Juells · 12/05/2018 14:52

Popcorn chicken? :( Just the name gives me the heebie jeebies.

Fresta · 12/05/2018 15:00

Horrible- I'd write to the head and complain!

hudyerwheesht · 12/05/2018 15:04

I hope there's a healthy option as per PP said, jacket spud, etc but even still - encouraging the idea of "fast food" complete with single use use plastic containers - every single week??

OP if I were you I'd be posting on the school Twitter/Facebook page with both of the pics above and asking some genuine questions about the school's real policy on waste and nutrition.

Totally irresponsible.

PositivelyPERF · 12/05/2018 15:08

All the "vegetarians" I know (about 5/6) eat fish too.

They’re bullshiters who don’t want to commit to being vegetarians, but want to use the term to make themselves feel special. Either that or they’re really really thick.

gallicgirl · 12/05/2018 15:10

I thought school meals had to be nutritionally balanced? unless it's an academy and then healthy food requirements don't need to be met.

My DDs school has something like this but once a year. I strongly suspect that's census day when they get figures for lunch funding. Wink

I wouldn't be happy with this every week and that's before we start on the waste.

Linzeyhun · 12/05/2018 15:13

Our school have done this once. I don't see the problem.

gallicgirl · 12/05/2018 15:15

Once isn't a problem. Every single week is problem.

CremeBrulee · 12/05/2018 15:15

Meh I wouldn't get too worked up over this as a one off special event.

Agree that polystyrene containers are not great but again I assume it's a one off?

TwigTheWonderKid · 12/05/2018 15:17

I have less of an issue with the food than with the totally uneessary plastic packaging. Shameful.

SimonBridges · 12/05/2018 15:17

It says every week so it’s not a one off.

Chattymummyhere · 12/05/2018 15:17

We have fast food Fridays it I think it’s still served on the normal plates. We had a fish day once but so many children went pack lunch on that day they got rid of it and just added fish as an extra option on their days.

GnotherGnu · 12/05/2018 15:17

I’m guessing the dinner staff finish early on a Friday and it significantly cuts clean up times

They could achieve that by using recyclable cardboard plates.

MaisyPops · 12/05/2018 15:18

Often on 'deal days' the other options are available (in my experience) e.g. jacket potato, sandwiches, salad. I wouldn't be bothered by fast food being available one day a week. It's common in secondary for one day a week to be fish and chips (all prepped on site). It teaches a balanced diet and a little bit of fast food is perfectly normal.

The single use containers would annoy me and I can't believe school are saying that's ok (even from a financial point of view that's extra rubbish they'll have to pay to be collected).

Juells · 12/05/2018 15:18

With extra exclamation marks to emphasise how exciting fast food is.

AnnieAnoniMouser · 12/05/2018 15:18

SneakyGremlins All the "vegetarians" I know (about 5/6) eat fish too

They’re not vegetarians. Get them told.

MeMyShelfandIkea · 12/05/2018 15:19

So what are you going to do about it kitkat?

fairgame84 · 12/05/2018 15:25

We do this twice per year. It's to encourage uptake of school dinners and it works. The kids love it.
Cook dresses in a baseball cap, they put music on and serve up the food in polystyrene containers.

SoupDragon · 12/05/2018 15:25

That is totally ridiculous. As everyone has said, no veggie option, no vegetables and single use containers. Disgraceful.

arethereanyleftatall · 12/05/2018 15:36

Bonkers, but you can presumably opt out?
