Bugger, I'm guilty of the 'rainbow bridge'. Said it last week when my lovely cat died. I'm generally not sentimental and certainly not religious, but it was a nice image to think of at the time.

Luisa27 · 13/05/2018 10:48

ooops sorry - credit to @Alltheminx for the original Four Tops ref 😂

midsomermurderess · 13/05/2018 11:24

Tummy, from adults.

Skiiltan · 13/05/2018 11:40

Tummy, from adults.

This is quite a tricky one. I agree it sounds silly, but the only real alternatives are belly and abdomen, neither of which reaslly sounds right. "Stomach", used to describe the abdomen from the bottom of the ribcage downwards, is just wrong.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 13/05/2018 11:44

Belly makes me want to throttle the speaker!

KellyanneConway · 13/05/2018 11:45

I saw DH's friend referred to his occupation as a "bossman" on social media this morning. He owns a small business. I don't know him very well but based on the use of that word I'm now pretty sure he's an egotistical dick.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 13/05/2018 11:47

I'm sorry for your loss, Delta. I lost my first much loved cat fourteen years ago and I still regularly see him in my dreams and miss him.

I too have used rainbow bridge, I discovered it back when he died and I looked for support online and found a rainbow bridge chat room! It's a nice idea I think for me as I'm not religious and don't believe in an after life, it's very cutesy but the idea that all of our much loved animals had crossed the rainbow bridge was really sweet and comforting.

Though it was funny when i bought my hamster a literal rainbow bridge years later, I twigged when I gave it to her and had a good giggle telling her to make sure she didn't full cross it 😂

'Uncomfortable' - when someone really means they don't like something, or want to come across as virtuously disapproving of it without actually saying as much.

Devendra · 13/05/2018 12:28

Minge
Hun/Hon
Pussy
Panties
Bb as in text talk for baby

Peterrabbitscarrots · 13/05/2018 12:36

Sorry, I feel bad now for saying rainbow bridge Sad

Lucisky · 13/05/2018 12:39

Toilet.
Pones (for ponies)
Beamer (for bmw)
Tummy
Sweetie
Tot (for small child)

ThistleAmore · 13/05/2018 12:41

'Hun', obviously: any right-thinking person should be horrified by that word.

The modern disease of many people's chronic inability to use adverbs correctly, so you end up with horribly-mangled sentences such as 'he played brilliant' or 'he/she/it did real good'.

But my absolute bete noire is 'tasty': I LOATHE that word, and I have to sit on my hands to stop myself from punching anybody who uses it to refer to food while I'm eating. The worst thing is I have absolutely no idea why it annoys me so much.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 13/05/2018 13:25

Hubby - actually makes me vom a little bit in my mouth. Says a lot about the person who uses it.

TomRavenscroft · 13/05/2018 13:28

portion, batch, wallet and prepare. All make my toes curl with embarrassment.

'picky tea' makes me feel ill. Never hear it in RL; only on here, thank God.

Oh, also pump.

AddictedtoAIBU · 13/05/2018 13:29

#makingmemories (when you are doing a bog standard mum activity i.e. Colouring in with the kids)
Fag. I just never liked the word (even when I smoked)

newyearwhoohoo · 13/05/2018 13:41

Oh you'd hate me. DH is "Hubby", "Hubs" or "Hublet". Will have to cease immediately! Blush

I hate "so" at the beginning of sentences, eg when answering a question.

Papergirl1968 · 13/05/2018 13:53

Platypus and Insomniac she’s from the Black Country. I think it might be to do with lemonade, which I guess was the most common fizzy drink in our house, being a bit tangy as opposed to “cordial” ie squash.

CosyLulu · 13/05/2018 13:53

To be honest ...
If I'm being honest ...

  • so normally you lie???

Also hate sentences starting with 'So ...' So is a connective!!!

Papergirl1968 · 13/05/2018 13:56

Oh and I hate gutsy. Our local paper uses it all the time. Gutsy granny sees off robber, gutsy tot recovers from brain op, gutsy student runs the London Marathon etc.
Gives me the rage.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 13/05/2018 13:58

Oh you'd hate me. DH is "Hubby", "Hubs" or "Hublet". Will have to cease immediately!

On the contrary, Hublet is fantastic!

TomRavenscroft · 13/05/2018 14:01

Paper, I have Black Country family too and 'books' for 'magazines' has always driven me mad. I hadn't heard your mum's other ones though.

Sorry, I mean 'mom' don't I!

Papergirl1968 · 13/05/2018 14:06

Yes, definitely mom, Tom Grin

Carboholic · 13/05/2018 14:08

Any expressions infantilising grown women.

And someone here used a term "choccy biccy" a few weeks ago and I'm still thinking of it regularly whenever I want to annoy myself.

Grilledaubergines · 13/05/2018 14:50

Hubby - actually makes me vom a little bit in my mouth. Says a lot about the person who uses it.

Yes, I’m not keen either. But what exactly does it say about the person using it? Hmm
