What is your most irrational fear?

And could you deal with it if you absolutely had to? Mine is spiders and I have had full blown panic attacks over them before. There was a huge wolf spider in my living room earlier and I had to deal with it as my young niece was terrified and crying. Psyching myself up to put a bowl over it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. Haha reading that back sounds barmy but it’s amazing how much a true phobia can affect you. My OH’s is heights and he said if it was a life or death situation and he had to jump out of a plane or do a bungee jump he’d rather just die

Frosty - I am starting to think that fear of spiders is not irrational - really really all of them should be shot into space. But I can't function normally if I see a big one. Just can't. Or a photo of one. Stupid , I know , but real.

Idrink I think that is similar to my very great dislike . nay , fear , of big container ships , engines , insides of power stations , just don't like the machinery and the massiveness. I can cope with wind turbines , but then they are a bit sleeker and prettier

WilyMinx · 17/05/2018 06:57

Any spider of whatever sort should be destroyed or shot into space.

Absolutely agree! And I think it's high time scientists got their priorities straight and looked into genetically modifying spiders to look much cuter but more or less function in the same way.

PurpleRobe · 17/05/2018 07:07

@BasiliskStare I'm scared of big ships, power stations, boilers, hot water tanks, pipes etc.

Are you scared of pipes too?

Presently my most irrational fear is DS (abusive to me) father suddenly caring enough about him to begin and maintain regular contact

It's irrational as he's not given any evidence to prove that he would actually keep up with regular contact or particularly cares

Getting in my car at night and there being someone hiding in the back.

A shark (or other horrible scary creature) being in a swimming pool

Fire terrifies me as does electricity.

My car catching fire and blowing up when the car in front chucks out a cigarette butt when driving

Escalators (going down). It took me years to brave going on them. I do now, but I absolutely hate it. I'm worried about being pushed down. I also down like walking downstairs particularly.

@Purplerobe - depends how big the pipes are - I do not run shrieking from the ones which join up to the radiators Grin - also our boiler in our house - fine - - No its more massive massive bits of machinery or big metal things which are just too big & a bit rusty and also dark dank deep things. So e.g. I have to drive past those massive cooling tower things on the M6 with white knuckles. Clanky Poirot style lifts with the metal gates and the chains - they have no place in my world.

@Wilyminx - excellent idea about genetically modifying spiders to be cuter ( or perhaps have fewer & shorter legs) . I would google what job they do in the eco system ( well I guess eating flies) but I can't because there may be a picture of one. Whatever the problem would be from recolonising them to alpha centurai or similar - I reckon I could live with it. It could be win win. We could shoot a few transport sized spaceships of flies over with them to get things started. If someone applied for PhD funding to investigate this - I would support them. Crowdfunding ?

Corned beef tins

They’re going to sever arteries if left in the bin and if anyone goes within 3 feet of the bin and we’re all going to die from corned beef tin cuts.

Seriously.

Those spinny-roundy things at airports, no idea what they’re called or what their purpose is (radar/satellite?), but I have always been terrified of them since childhood and have to avoid “eye contact” with them now!

My Mum’s is that volcanoes can move/change location, and will one day wake up with one outside her house. She knows it’s not going to happen but that doesn’t stop it... a true irrational fear!
