To think HGVs and slow moving vehicles should be banned during rush hour

I'm talking about busy single carriageway A and B roads.

There's nothing more frustrating than being stuck behind a huge lorry going at 30mph on a 60mph single carriageway road (so now way to safely overtake). I think they should be restricted to travelling outside busy times , though it would obviously be hard to enforce. They end up with about 20 cars behind them and it's also dangerous as they don't fit in the lane, so go over the line and give less room to oncoming traffic, especially on a narrowish rural road.

My heart sinks when I know I'm going to be stuck behind one for 10 miles on my way to work.

YANBU. There has been a lot of talk about banning HGVs from London due to cyclist deaths, actually. They also ban HGVs from driving at certain times in France, I think.

adaline · 11/05/2018 19:45

I agree it's frustrating, but how are you going to enforce a ban?

Barbaro · 11/05/2018 19:48

Tractors on roads at rush hour. Why?! Could they not wait? They need banned.

Thehogfather · 11/05/2018 19:49

Tbh I find it far more common, and far more frustrating to be stuck behind shit car drivers who would be failed for lack of progress/ inability to use roundabouts/ lanes/ general shit driving if they were to drive in a test that way.

Sirzy · 11/05/2018 19:50

So you want to restrict the movement for the vehicles which keep shops supplied? Do you realise what an issue that would be logicistically?

And where would you like all these vehicles to disappear to during these hours?

megletthesecond · 11/05/2018 19:50

I for one quite like food grown in this country so the farmers can use the roads whenever they jolly well like.

categed · 11/05/2018 19:50

Enjoy the price of all goods going up as they have to pay more unsociable hours to drivers or shorter routes as driver night hours can be shorter. Hgvs have a plce moving the vast majority of goods, essential or ptherwise around the country. Yes it can be a pain but so can running out of fuel only to find you can't get any until the tankers are allowed on the roads.
People complain about tractors on roads as well, yes it can be frustrating but tgey are the key infastructure on which this country runs. Maybe some roads could be closed at certain hours but would you be happy to absorb the cost increase that this may lead to?

YANBU

It’s when they over take each other on a dual carriage way to go 3mph faster than the other, but it’s takes ages for them to get passed - drives me mad!

France have a ban, but it’s a weekend one about-france.com/hgv.htm

We could utilise our railway lines more but we don’t.

categed · 11/05/2018 19:56

Our railways are running near capacity and who moves the good to and from the railways for distribution?

Sirzy · 11/05/2018 19:57

I live in a town with major distribution centres and factories.

I also live in a town with no railway stations within a 20 minute drive.

The rail network is nowhere near good enough to have a massive impact in current times

CocoaGin · 11/05/2018 20:02

My personal bugbear is caravans. I think they should only be allowed on the roads 7pm to 7am. They're nearly always towed by men driving a Ford Mondeo without a spec of dirt on it and in pristine creased M & S trousers with a perfect haircut and moustache. FFS. Give your wife a break you tight bastards and book a hotel and put your tin can back on the drive!!

We live rurally and tractors are frustrating at times but part of life. And most are very courteous and pull over when they are able.

balsamicbarbara · 11/05/2018 20:06

^^ 100% agreed, CocoaGin. In the area I live there's actually a byelaw that prohibits us from having a caravan on our driveways. Unfortunately work vans are allowed but one can't have everything.

How can they do that? Businesses need deliveries, and building sites etc. Surely no-one drives an HGV through central London traffic for fun.

YABU, too many impatient drivers around. Too many drivers I see speeding to beat a light to just join a queue of traffic, or not know how to use their indicators.

YABU and this would be impossible to enforce. Some HGV drivers are on the road for days on end. Are they just meant to pull over and sit around between 7:30-9am and 4-6pm? Who's going to pay for these lost hours?

I think we need to focus on how important HGVs and tractors are to our everyday lives and wellbeing. I get stuck behind these types of vehicles occasionally. It's annoying but doesn't have a profound effect on my life to be honest.

Pebblespony · 11/05/2018 20:11

Other people have to live too. YABU.

JontyDoggle37 · 11/05/2018 20:13

Or..just be slightly more patient and enjoy the scenery/listening to he radio...🙄

adaline · 11/05/2018 20:14

Well, livestock doesn't go into labour on demand, and crops need maintaining regardless of what time of day it is. My route to work is often disrupted by tractors moving cattle between fields, or (at this time of year), farmers going to help their sheep and cows give birth.

4GreenApples · 11/05/2018 20:19

I agree it’s frustrating to get stuck behind a HGV, but I don’t think banning them at rush hour is practical.

It’s not like they’re out there for fun, they’re delivering all sorts of stuff that’s vital to keep the economy running smoothly.

The slow moving thing that really annoys me is the horse and traps, especially when they’re on busy single carriageways at rush hour. They move so, so slooooooowly (obviously), a typical HGV is like a Formula 1 car in comparison, and I find it difficult to imagine that anyone is using them as their main method of transportation in this day and age.

DrCorday · 11/05/2018 20:19

The current rail network this applies t
There are old tracks all over the UK not in use. It annoys me that we’re spending millions on HS2 and not on the remaining network. So frustrating for industry and the public.

MachineBee · 11/05/2018 20:20

If you take of HGVs the companies delivering the goods would simply replace with several other smaller vehicles and the roads would then completely grind to a stand still.

wictional · 11/05/2018 20:23

Tell me about it. On the way to work today i was stuck behind a driver in the right-hand lane at traffic lights who just idled there to let the 3/4 lorries on the left go ahead of them, so we ended up stuck at 30mph on a 50😭 Angry ended up getting to work 20 minutes late!!

Racecardriver · 11/05/2018 20:24

There is no reason for slow moving vehicles to be on single carriageway roads at rush hour. The majority of goods supply movement occurs on motorways and dual carriageways so it wouldn't be unworkable to ban ale moving vehicles on A road for two to three hours a day. However, a better solution would be to build roads that are actually for for purpose, the money could be raised by operating tolls with an increased charge to asks moving vehicles setting as they have necessitated building extra lanes.

Racecardriver · 11/05/2018 20:26

@adenine why would a farmer need to bring a while tractor to help animals give birth?
