The red dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge

It was practically identical to the one worn by Mia Farrow in Rosemary's baby, right down to the lace collar, just a different shade of red. I mean huge royal photo shoots like the one where she stood on the steps holding her baby are never by chance. Intense planning goes into official shoots like that. I just found it rather strange. Aibu to think it a strange choice. Anyone else, or am i being silly.

I can't believe that they wouldn't have realised.

Why not? If the people involved are like me, and have never seen the film or seen any images from the film why on earth would they realise?

HangersOn · 11/05/2018 13:26

I thosight it was to do with Louis being born on St George’s day. It’s the colours of the English flag.

CheesyWeez · 11/05/2018 13:29

I’ve never seen the film and I’m in my fifties.

I’m sure there are millions of people who haven’t seen the film.
I'm not really getting what this is about tbh :/

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 11/05/2018 13:29

It's a stylist job to research everything they can about such a public garment. There's even more work for official visits, but they don't just chose random clothes because they like them.

Zaphodsotherhead · 11/05/2018 13:30

But the thing is, it's not in fashion

It will be...

And, tbh, does fashion really matter when it comes to coming out of hospital with a baby? Isn't it more about looking presentable and being comfortable and not highlighting the 'baby tummy'?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/05/2018 13:31

Either they didn't realise as most of their entourage is very young so would not have seen Rosemary's Baby, or perhaps Kate has more of a sense of humour than we realised!

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 11/05/2018 13:32

SPOILER ALERT* SPOILER

cheesyWeez if you haven't googled it yet, the movie is the story of a pregnant woman who suspects that an evil cult wants to take her baby for use in their rituals.(sic wikipedia)
You have to admit that it's a strange choice to wear the same dress when showing your new born to the world media Grin

It's funny, I don't think it's offensive to anyone, but it's an odd choice!

Banterlope · 11/05/2018 13:34

erm…

The red dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge
Teateaandmoretea · 11/05/2018 13:37

I just thought red was a sensible choice for a woman who has just given birth and is bleeding heavily......

CheesyWeez · 11/05/2018 13:38

Thanks ikee, Yes I googled it! It's a horror film from the sixties. I was thinking it was about Mia Farrow and her difficult life. I feel like Amazing though, it's not the conclusion many people would come to, that her life is like a horror movie. Interesting thread.

MrPan · 11/05/2018 13:43

practically identical

erm...is that bit like 'almost unique'?

gillybeanz · 11/05/2018 13:45

two totally different dresses.
Different style and colour with the older one having a bow at the neck, but apart from that identical Grin
I'm more surprised at the effort to tie them together tbh.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 11/05/2018 13:45

does fashion really matter when it comes to coming out of hospital with a baby?
It obviously matters a great deal for Kate. She could have chosen to dress like other royals have done in similar occasions, in flat shoes, smart trousers or whatever, she chose to wear a pretty dress and nude heels every time. It's her own choice, so it clearly matters to her.
If I had her legs after giving birth, I probably wear a short skirt too!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 11/05/2018 13:52

I've heard of the film but never seen it, so I googled it.

"The film chronicles the story of a pregnant woman who suspects that an evil cult wants to take her baby for use in their rituals."

Perhaps Kate DID choose the dress herself and it's a cry for help...

CoolCarrie · 11/05/2018 13:54

Mia Farrow’s dress was velvet and that style and material was popular in the 60s.

Curtainshopping · 11/05/2018 13:55

I’m about the same age as Kate and I’ve only vaguely heard of the film, never seen it and certainly couldn’t tell you what anyone wears in it. I don’t think it’s as widely known as you think it is.

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 11/05/2018 14:04

I honestly think that's the reason why her wedding dress was so safely "inspired" by Grace Kelly - no hidden history there!

baxterboi · 11/05/2018 14:09

Perhaps Kate's stylist hasn't seen Mia Farrow in Rosemary's Baby?

I'm thinking coincidence....

TeisanLap · 11/05/2018 14:11

I can't believe that they wouldn't have realised

Why would they realise something they probably knew nothing about?

Do you really think that everyone on the planet is aware of a movie called Rosemarys Baby?

Ive just had to google it.

I think youre just stirring.

Jonbb · 11/05/2018 14:11

FFS what are you people on?

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 11/05/2018 14:13

stylists are paid to know about these things, of course they will have researched every item suggested to her! When your client will be shown in every news item in the world, you do your homework.
People do it for much less famous clients than Kate.

baxterboi · 11/05/2018 14:14

Film was made in 1968, Kate's stylist is 30 and probably not googling "women wearing red dresses in the 60's" when trying to pick Kate's outfit!

apostropheuse · 11/05/2018 14:22

I've seen the film and never made any connection whatsoever - who actually remembers a particular dress from a film from so long ago? It reminded me of the type of clothing her MIL (and I Grin) would have worn in the eighties actually.

(Great film).

icedcoke · 11/05/2018 14:40

Oh well, perhaps i'm looking too much into it. I certainly accept not everyone will have been aware of the film. I'm sure the palace were aware though., and the dresser won't have any say so on outfits for photo shoots, only up to a point anyway. The dress seems to have been purposely chosen to be the same as in the film, it's too iconic to be otherwise, even if it was all those years ago. Not sure why though. Just wish we knew the significance.

TeisanLap what on earth do you think i'm stirring, Confused why would you say that. I was just slightly freaked out is all, and wanted other opinions.

I agree no one would remember a particular dress from a film years ago, it would only become significant in circumstances like this i suppose.
