To be furious at my family for being so careless after such a tragedy

This has been brought to my attention with the hotter weather coming in. We recently lost an extended family member to cancer. She became paralysed from the chest down and died in a very uncomfortable way. My entire family saw the way this effected her immediate family, children, grandchildren etc.
I would have thought that this would have made them more aware about all forms of cancer but they all refuse to wear suncream! My Mum in particular will absolutely cook herself then act disgusted or shocked when someone tells her or suggests suncream. My brother and his partner are the same, they constantly put tanning oil on and preach that suncream causes cancer not the sun.
Aibu to think that considering recent events this level of carelessness is just ridiculous? My mum has kids and grandkids that rely on her and love her so much and she continues to take these risks.
Everyone I've brought it up with has said it's none of my business and that as long as I've mentioned it to them I should stay out so Aibu? Any tips on what I can do to change their mind?

The guy I knew who died was 44 left 2 young children.

Sorry nannybeach. I didn't understand your first sentence.
I didn't say there was no risk. Just fairly low in uk. 2285 deaths from melanoma last yr out of a population of 66 million...

When you compare wirh Australia. Figures not exact but approx 1800 deaths last year from a population of 24 million.

I am still v careful when in either country for myself and my dc but the risks are lower in UK, the sun is nowhere near as strong.

Cancer is indiscriminate

Non smokers get lung cancer
Healthy eaters and non drinkers get liver cancer

As the weather is so shit here I don’t think people see the sun as a risk in quite the same way either

pigmcpigface · 10/05/2018 17:00

Sigh. This is simple, why do people make it seem hard?

Cancer is indiscriminate BUT there are risk factors that predispose you to getting certain types. It's not a switch, where you turn on the smoking and you automatically get cancer. It's a balance of probabilities.

Stay out in the heat of the sun for a long time without sunscreen and you're more predisposed to skin cancer than someone who protects themselves. Smoke, and you're more predisposed to lung cancer than someone who doesn't smoke. This doesn't mean that nonsmokers can't get these cancers. They can and do. The protection isn't absolute. It's probablistic.

They are obviously idiotic fools but you can't force them to wear sun cream.

Why anyone would rather burn to a crisp, with all the pain that comes with it than just put suncream on I don't know. Some people are just weird and hate being told what to do.

MrsJayy · 10/05/2018 17:07

My mum bought sun cream one yearwe all went away factor 6 Hmm she comes back from holiday like a mahogany side board there is no telling her, yanbu to want them to protect themselves but you really need to save your energy.

JamPasty · 10/05/2018 17:28

All you can realistically do is show them the NHS information on how to recognise moles and skin lesions that need to be checked by a doctor, and then remind them to keep checking their skin for anything that looks dodgy

winterisstillcoming · 10/05/2018 17:31

You might be better telling them that sun exposure causes wrinkles. It ages people big time. You just have to go to Benidorm to see it x

Sorry misread mrsplum, there are lots of different types of skin cancer, its not only melenoma that will kill you, others will if left. We get plenty of sun where I live, my DH has never sunbahed doesnt like the heat, but accumalative effects, the sun is after all radiation! he has black hair dark brown eyes as I said, but even a walk in winter give you a dose of radiation, it passes through glass when you are driving. Yes, you are more likely to die in a RTC, but you wear a seatbelt, and have airbags these days, of course, a lot of people will be lucky, get away with it. Also found out another relatives of my late DM had lots of growths removed, no-one ever thought to inform me, of this family risk.
