To think Neil Young is rubbish?

Just that really. I hate his nasal whining, he's not even attractive, and I just don't get all the fuss.

Southern Cross isn't a NY song

Agreed, and admittedly an aside.

(Originally composed in a rather different form called Seven League Boots by the Curtis Brothers, CSN took the tune, rewrote the lyrics and added a new chorus, so I thing we can say they largely developed Southern Cross into the form they recorded.)

Huffinpuff · 10/05/2018 13:45

Southern Cross? Did you mean Southern Man?

he's not even attractive
Seriously?

tradervictoria · 10/05/2018 14:05

No, Huff, it was just an aside.

Southern Man was NY's response to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama.

Semster · 10/05/2018 14:41

After The Gold Rush is one of the most beautiful songs. I always assumed he was off his face on something when he wrote it.

wijjy · 10/05/2018 15:04

Southern Man was NY's response to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama.

Other way around. Sweet home Alabama was a response to Southern Man. Young is namechecked in the lyrics.

Huffinpuff · 10/05/2018 15:44

"Piece of Crap" (from his later work) is one of my personal NY favourites, and oft-quoted, especially when yet another small or large appliance breaks down.

But all of Harvest is brilliant.

Semster · 10/05/2018 15:45

How many other people are listening to Neil Young now?

Thank you OP.

Kintan · 10/05/2018 15:47

I like his songs sung by other people, but agree he has a very nasally voice. I can only listen to him in short bursts. I really like his unplugged versions of Pocahontas, and Like a Hurricane though.

Step · 10/05/2018 15:47

YAB VERY U
"I saw cotton and I saw black,
tall white mansions and little shacks.
Southern Man, when will you pay them back?"

Fab songwriter....

ShackUp · 10/05/2018 16:35

senua I love Toast! Paul Young's finest hour 3 minutes

The80sweregreat · 10/05/2018 17:03

shackUp, Paul young!! he is aging well i think, was on pointless the other week, ' wherever he lays his hat, thats his home'

Ifailed · 10/05/2018 17:12

Come back OP when you've written and performed songs like he has, otherwise you just look jealous. Oh and you better look good as well, because that's so important, isn't it?

FlyMaybe · 10/05/2018 22:25

Jealous of what?! Don't be ridiculous.

I've had another go today. Listened to Harvest as suggested. Nope. I'm still not getting it. Have decided to give up trying to like NY. I just don't.

So I put John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen and Eagles on instead. Other great artists. Who I prefer. Their lyrics are better too. (IMO of course). It's ok to disagree isn't it?

I do think he's rubbish, ShellShock. I know lots of other people disagree and I'm fine with that.

Wash your mouth out!

I agree he probably isn't a very nice person, but he has been around for 50 years and still making music/touring. My whole family including 10 yo DS are huge fans.
So many brilliant albums 'Harvest' 'Everybody knows this nowwhere' and songs . . . 'Like a Hurricane' 'Cortez the killer' 'Country Girl' . . . too many to list. So what if he's good looking? will Justin Bieber and a lot of other crap bands of today be around in 50 years?
Even though Lynard Skynard wrote 'Sweet Home Alabama' in response to Southern Man they respected him . . . When they were in the plane crash that killed several of them, one of their members was wearing a Neil Young t shirt.
Sorry OP I'm not normally an opinionated ranter ! Just gotta defend great music!

counterpoint · 10/05/2018 23:17

Listened to Harvest endlessly, way back. Have never been sure about this:

^I was thinking that maybe I'd get a maid
Find a place nearby for her to stay.
Just someone to keep my house clean,
Fix my meals and go away.

A maid.
A man needs a maid.
A maid^

JessieMcJessie · 10/05/2018 23:22

The CSNY set in the Woodstock documentary movie is outstanding. However I agree with you OP, NY on his own is too whiny a singer for my taste.

SwedishEdith · 10/05/2018 23:24

Found his Unplugged cd recently.

Helpless is so evocative. Gorgeous.

SwedishEdith · 10/05/2018 23:26

And the Unplugged version of Like a Hurricane is ace.

Mrsmadevans · 10/05/2018 23:33

I love Harvest moon but it it literally the only one. So judging him even on that one song , it is such a gorgeous song , he isn't rubbish.

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 10/05/2018 23:40

It's funny how this thread was started to complain about a 72 year old man not being attractive but it's turned into a total Neil Young fan fest! Personally, I love him - he was my Mum's favourite artist and I have many childhood memories with his music playing in the background. Cheers OP!

MrsCatE · 10/05/2018 23:49

YABU and bonkers!!! FFS, mighty NEIL YOUNG!! Next you'll be saying don't understand Bruce Springsteen. If you do so, I will find you...

Battleax · 11/05/2018 02:17

TBF Spiteful, OP said “rubbish”, “nasal whining” and “not even attractive” which isn’t quite the same is it?
