Influencer ethics on Instagram

Continuing the discussion on whether influencing on Instagram is an ethical business model, particularly around the disclosure of advertising and the over exposure of children.

AIBU to think it isn't a sustainable career unless the influencer is scrupulously ethical?

Reboot 😱

SurfingUSA · 10/05/2018 20:48

Back to talking of ethical. I saw Pink House was at a dinner for BHF. As someone who donates to them a lot because of family member with heart condition, I was a bit miffed they were feeding interiors instas. I couldn't think what purpose it would serve.

HolyMountain · 10/05/2018 20:49

I love those flat shoes, great for my TA class job but they’re not on sale in my M+S😒.

I love Erica Davies; she is upfront , has taste and is great fun with no sense of superiority and doesn’t get offended too often.

Love her.

MadameGrizzly · 10/05/2018 20:50

I'll begrudgingly say the peach dress looks better styled on the model, but where would you wear it? It wouldn't be appropriate for most offices, you'd feel daft wearing that out to grab a coffee or do the groceries. For an event like a christening you'd need the lose the boots and then it becomes too twee.

It's a dress designed for an Instagram fantasy lifestyle.

I think that's the pink one, FlyingBird? It should have been a good evening dress for summer but there was something odd about the fit and the dress wasn't quite Schiaparelli pink - it has a candy pink tinge to it.

Also saw G Fletcher got a slaying for her new partnership with Avon. I wasn't aware they test on animals for the China market or were a pyramid scheme.

SurfingUSA · 10/05/2018 20:52

Grizzly yes, but only an insta who didn't have to sit down on public transport in London.

Avon are an MLM now. I was pretty shocked that so many big names went out and supported them tbh.

MadameGrizzly · 10/05/2018 20:54

I saw those Pink House stories too. I think she is loving herself sick being back in London and would attend the opening of the proverbial envelope.

I suppose she gave the BHF exposure? Hmm

Reboot · 10/05/2018 20:55

I don’t think Avon is a pyramid scheme in the same sense as other MLMs.

SurfingUSA · 10/05/2018 20:58

Do BHF need 'exposure'. The furniture shops are for people who need cheap furniture, not for middle class upcyclers 🙄

nipersvest · 10/05/2018 20:59

@surfingusa am quite shocked if that's true about BHF, that makes me feel sad they would fund that. I am recovering from a rare type of heart attack that affects mainly women, it has had some funding for research from the BHF but thats come to an end.

@Reboot I love that one with silver and suade

MadameGrizzly · 10/05/2018 21:03

The Wardrobe Ivons and Aurora breakfast looked lovely this morning.

You know what would also have been lovely? Each attendee writing a personal message of support on a card, the card being placed in a bag, and the bags all donated to a charity that helps women out of poverty.

To be honest, some of these women have so much time on their hands and obviously plenty of connections, they could start the charity.

I think influencers getting involved with any charity is a difficult one. All charities need exposure and influencers could be good for that if they have a story to tell, but charging to promote is a definite no no in my eyes. If they want to charge to be involved, the charity should look elsewhere.

Reboot · 10/05/2018 21:11

No idea who pink house is btw. But have seen of other influencers who have attracted bad press because of charging a fee for a charity thing, and quite rightly so.

WipsGlitter · 10/05/2018 21:13

MOD was involved with water aid I'd love to know how they measured the success of the collaboration.

SurfingUSA · 10/05/2018 21:14

I'm sorry to hear that Nipersvest.

Perhaps I'm being too harsh. Maybe selling stuff to up-cyclers will raise more money?

Flying - maybe you're right.

Grizzly - yes feels like ladies who lunch/do charity events on those housewifes tv series. Wait until they all start on the Botox to keep their faces intact for stories on a few years 😆

nipersvest · 10/05/2018 21:16

I'm not a fan of the influencer group breakfast/lunches, they have just become far too nepotistic. The same people invited, all London centric, coming away with yet more freebies, it puts me off the brand completely.

MadameGrizzly · 10/05/2018 21:17

I think if Pink House raised a lot of money for a charity, she would be backwards in coming forwards to tell us all.

She attended the BHF event, but I don't think she was paid to attend as she seems above board with disclosing advertising. She might have been given a free ticket - but does that require an #AD hashtag?

It's inevitable that in some capacity BHF have compensated her for her time and instastories.

Advertising Botox is banned so luckily we won’t be subjected to any #ads when they do!
