To wish other motorists would stop trying to hit my sodding car?!?

I have had four near crashes in two bloody days. None of these were even remotely my fault and were caused either by drivers pulling out at junctions without enough time or cutting up lanes on roundabouts because they haven't got a clue which lane they should be in!!

I'm so wound up by it! I'm a decent driver and try to be really careful but am finding it difficult to continually have to pre-empt others bad driving.

So... AIBU to think that drivers should be required to retest every, say, 10 years (or less?) to ensure they are up to date on changes to road laws and remain competent drivers?

The other day I was deaccelerating for a red traffic light, three lanes of road , one filters to the left, two go straight on. I was in the middle lane to go straight on. There was no one behind me, or in front of me . BUT a person in the right hand lane suddenly decided they wanted to take the left filter so accelerated and cut sharply in front of me, luckily I was slowing anyway and my brakes are good. I reckoned we missed each other by about a foot.

TittyGolightly · 09/05/2018 15:46

Tiredness is supposed to be in Britain the most common cause of accidents. So retests would not help. Because someone can pass a retest and still drive terribly at other times.

Don’t tell the speed lobby that. 🙄

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 09/05/2018 19:38

A colleague of mine had some arse hit her car while in works car park and they drove off. The car has plenty of space to reverse out the spot.

There's a little car park in front of the village shop and the things I've seen. My main annoyance is people parking their massive cars in there. It is a tiny car park and it doesnt need a fecking tank in it. There's 2 bigger carparks around the back.

BobbleHat102 · 10/05/2018 03:14

People who can't use slip roads. Twice in a week I've had near misses, one clown slowing sharply to 30mph on the motorway in preparation to exit, and another joining a motorway at 40mph despite having a nearly new mercedes and plenty of space to accelerate!

Jamboree05 · 10/05/2018 08:17

@crunchymint - agreed that tiredness must be a massive factor in a lot of crashes but there are still plenty of people on the roads who just haven't a clue!!!

The chap yesterday who nearly hit me simply couldn't decide which lane at the roundabout he needed to be in, and decided to move into my lane (and into me by proxy) without so much as a glance in his mirrors. At 2 in the afternoon, with his (I assume) wife in the car, I suspect that was just piss poor driving.

At least a retest every however many years would ensure that people at least new the basics!

That's happened to me loads.

Some people just can't drive on motorways. At the beginning of school holidays I see more accidents on them than normal.

Added to that are the people who can't merge in turn when A roads go down to one or two lanes. Yet when it isn't school holidays drivers can do it with no problems. I've been told some people think you are cheating if you use the right hand lane as they obviously think a tailback to the next junction is fine. Hmm

Oh YES this - drives me mad - no need to drop down to 30 and brake to enter a big long slip road designed to slow you down ONCE you have left the motorway

and lane discipline on roundabouts - why do people have no concept of this?

Jamboree05 · 10/05/2018 09:04

It's the ones in the left hand lane at roundabouts who then cut straight across rather than following the curve of the lane, inevitably cutting up the poor sod in the right hand lane.

They drive me potty....

I have a dashcam now too. Used to like driving but avoid it as much as I can now. Some people just oblivious to what’s happening around them. Been watching crash detectives series that just finished, can’t believe the risks people take to save a few seconds.

Parentingissotough · 10/05/2018 09:16

Motorways are horrendous - I was on the M25 recently (which I hate) and there was a minibus for a Cristian church in the third lane (2nd fastest) doing 50. They were causing chaos.

My car got written off a few years ago - I followed a chap onto a round about; left hand lane, both turning left, nothing coming. A car then came round the round about a bit fast but in the inside lane signaling right. The car in front of me did a dead stop because it ‘freaked him out’. My micra got written off. His Toyota tank had a tiny dent in the boot. I was furious.

There’s no “2nd fastest” lane. They all have the same limits.

POPholditdown · 10/05/2018 10:56

Some people are just knobs.

Someone drove into me on a small roundabout. It was my right of way, I’d just moved off, and it’s really difficult to see to the left side because the roads are a bit slanted, so there was no chance of me even stopping until its too late.

The crash could have been so much worse as he flew into someones front garden (and blamed me for not stopping). There’s also a little playground on the other side.

Since then (we moved to the area) I haven’t seen one person stop from that side to give way properly. Vans, buses, cars they all treat it like a normal road, and continue at 30+, even though there are clear signs all over the place.

Jamboree05 · 10/05/2018 11:02

Last week at a roundabout I had someone pull out in front of me from the roundabout entrance to my left.

He had the gall to stop his car and shout "it's a roundabout love" at me.

Yes. It's a roundabout. At roundabouts you give way to the RIGHT.

🤦‍♀️

My apologies @tittygolightly please enlighten me as to how I should describe that lane? Noting of course that fastest is a relative term, the speed limit is absolute. I bow to your exceptional wisdom Hmm

pigsDOfly · 10/05/2018 11:16

I learned to drive over 45 years ago. My driving instructor told me then to drive as if everyone else on the road was an idiot.

Seems that even though the driving test has been made harder, nothing changes.

myfriendbob · 10/05/2018 11:18

4 in 2 days? Despite what you say, its likely to be you.

NotARegularPenguin · 10/05/2018 11:28

Someone's just hit me today. Tried to squeeze behind me while I'm in a traffic jam. Hit the back of my car. Stopped. Then went again. So scraped entire length of her car down my rear corner. Then drove off. I had to do a u turn and chase her for two miles before she stopped. Why she didn't stop immediately rather than do more damage I don't know.

RosieposiePuddingandPi · 10/05/2018 11:29

We live just off a major A-road and some of the driving round here is horrendous. I drive a dinky picanto which apparently makes me invisible even though I'm travelling at the same speed as everyone else.
The worst part here is that we have 2 very straight stretches of road either way; I drive one way and DH drives the other. I frequently get shoved to one side of 'my road' as speeding idiots shove past everyone else who's going at 60 and DH often gets stuck behind super slow cars who don't go over 40 on his route.
When I was massively pregnant we ended up in the ditch of the other road at night when a 4x4 decided to overtake an enormous queue of cars and continue driving directly at us with his beams on. Thank god DH is a decent driver. I hate having to worry about other drivers!

AmethystRaven · 10/05/2018 11:40

So many people round here park on bends and junctions it's awful. The other day I was passing parked cars near a t junction and a boy racer flew out of the junction (wasn't in sight when I started passing the cars) after only looking to the right not the left where I was on the wrong side of the road. I swerved to avoid him as I was just past the cars and it was fine but I was quite shaken.

Also, in the last 6 months, I have had no less than 3 cars pull round me to go through lights as I'm stopping on amber. One was a taxi Shock

mavismcruet · 10/05/2018 11:50

I sometimes think my car has a button I accidentally press that turns it invisible. Especially on the school run. I had a (very minor) prang a while back when someone pulled out of a road into my side. His apology was “sorry I didn’t see you there”. I was the massive bright red car driving straight across his field of vision. How can you miss me???

Racecardriver · 10/05/2018 11:56

YANBU. I nearly got into a head on collision on a national speed limit road when some idiot decided to overtake a long line of cars just before a bend. His plastic hatchback would have ended up in pieces if I hadn't slammed the breaks. Thank god the person behind me was very reasonable and left a good breaking distance. I won't even start on the people who try to join a busy dual carriageway without finding a gap.

TittyGolightly · 10/05/2018 11:57

My apologies @tittygolightly please enlighten me as to how I should describe that lane?

Lane 3 is fine.

Jamboree05 · 10/05/2018 12:00

Ha! @myfriendbob... do explain to me how two people (separate incidents) pulling out from side streets in front of me, a person chopping and changing their lanes at a roundabout and someone running a bloody red light are even remotely my fault?!

OP posts:
myfriendbob · 10/05/2018 12:02

4 in 2 days...you're the common denominator there....

Jamboree05 · 10/05/2018 12:07

Wonderful sarcastic comment @bob. No explanation of how what I've described is my fault.
