Fun post but get a lot of traffic here, AIBU to ask - when you got married, where you honeymooned, what you/bridesmaids wore, flowers, what mothers wore?, approx how many guests. Any nice stories out there 😀

OP posts:
GameOldBirdz · 09/05/2018 14:20
  • No "honeymoon"
  • No bridesmaids
  • I wore blue skinny jeans, brown ankle boots and a top with parrots on- all from Primark
  • No flowers
  • My mother wore a black and white tunic top, black trousers and grey and black funky patterned shoes.
  • My DP's mother wore a full-on pastel blue wedding suit.
  • Three guests.

We were signing a legal contract so no need for pomp and bullshit.

There were no flowers, cake, guests, stupid outfits when we signed our mortgage contract either, which felt like a much bigger commitment.

travelinterest · 09/05/2018 14:21

Sorry, I was just interested. Thought it's nice to reminisce for those who've done it all.

Getting married next year!

No idea where we will honeymoon but it will be in 2020

Wedding dress, no bridesmaids

Having a seasonal, natural bouquet

7 guests

GorgonLondon · 09/05/2018 14:28

No honeymoon.
No bridesmaids.
No flowers.
No idea what my mum or mil wore.
I wore a black dress that I could breastfeed in.
6 guests if you include our two very young children.

scurryfunge · 09/05/2018 14:29

We honeymooned a week before the wedding due to work commitments. Registry office with 20 guests. No bridesmaids and one posy of flowers. Big party at a hotel for 100 plus later on. Can't remember what my mum wore (nearly 30 years ago) and I bought a dress off the high street.

Happinessisabook · 09/05/2018 14:30

Getting married in 6m.
Traditional ivory dress for me, tails for oh. 1 bridesmaid in purple, 1 flower girl in white. Best man, no ushers / page boys etc.
Honeymoon will be a winter city break but not booked yet, we prefer trips where we get to see things rather than sitting on a beach. Proper holiday next summer, Greece we think.
Flowers is bouquet of roses and lavender and things (check out Pinterest for ideas, some lovely ones).
One mother wearing grey, other navy but they haven't chosen their dresses yet.
70 guests for the day, no extras for the evening. That is only because we both have large families who we want there, otherwise it would be a lot smaller.

Eliza9917 · 09/05/2018 14:39

No date set yet but I'm having a town hall (as nicer than the registry office) with a proper wedding dress, most likely in ivory, a bouquet made out of ribbon so I can keep it, not sure where the honeymoon will be, maybe Cuba. Only having nieces/nephews as flower girls/page boys. Girls in white with trim in whatever we decide on as the 'colour'. Boys in little suits. Obviously I don't know what MOB/MOG will wear. Probably about 70-100 guests, with a buffet and alcohol laid on. Will be local and only a few mins between the registry office and reception venue.

Very different to the Vegas wedding we originally planned!

wellBeehivedWoman · 09/05/2018 14:40

Someone make sure gameoldbirdz gets her certificate for being morally superior to everyone because she had a no bullshit wedding...

I actually think this is a nice thread OP (or would be if others could manage not to be judgmental Hmm)

I wore an ivory dress with lace overlay - quite simple but with a longish train. And I had a cathedral length veil embroidered with roses, because I knew I'd only get the opportunity once Grin

Bridesmaids wore grey. Flowers were pale pink and ivory roses and peonies mixed with grey toned foliage like lambs ears, eucalyptus and sage. We also had some little succulents on the tables, and trees with fairy lights in amongst the tables. MIL wore a long dress in a burnt orange colour with a gold jacket (much more gorgeous than it sounds!) and mum wore pale pink long dress with bright pink accessories. We had about 120 guests and then honeymooned in South Africa and Tanzania!

My favourite story from my wedding is that our first dance was to a song which my husand told me on our third date that we would dance to at our wedding ❤️

Tell us about yours OP!

FinallyARainbow · 09/05/2018 14:41

2012
Ronald Joyce (Victoria Jane) white wedding dress
full length bridesmaid dress
Mums had full on MOB/G outfits complete with big hats
70 guests plus another 40ish at night
Mauritius/Dubai honeymoon
Kilts for DH, BM, ushers and Dads (and most male guests chose kilts over suits too)

YesILikeItToo · 09/05/2018 14:42

Yes, I had a lovely wedding about twenty years ago. I wanted a dinner dance, it was a black tie affair with a great ceilidh band. All my effort went into arranging a venue where the tables did not have to be moved for the dancing and ensuring a band who would soundcheck in the afternoon rather than after dinner - other factors paled in comparison to this. I wore an evening dress. My witness had a trouser suit, as I remember it her jacket had a bit of a ringmaster type vibe to it, it was certainly a very cool thing whatever it was. There were about 80 guests I think. A friend made floral arrangements for the tables, with lots of spring bulbs, and I remember we had lamb for dinner, it was that sort of time of year. It all went off splendidly, and generated a loads of great stories and incidents for reminiscing. I do remember, though, that no-one really asked me to dance, I suppose they thought I'd be busy.

travelinterest · 09/05/2018 14:44

I agree wellbehivedwoman, each to their own on their own plans. No need to judge. Sadly I have nothing to contribute, just watched four weddings and a funeral the last day and thought I'd cheer up others days.

when you got married - 2012. In Spain because we live here. Had 23 friends there, all pretty much lived in different countries. We hired a villa for a week and everyone stayed there. We had great fun all messing about, going to beaches, hanging out in the evening. We got married at the end of that week.

where you honeymooned - We didn't. One of our favorite bands were in Europe for the first time in about 8 years a few days after we got married so we went to that instead.

what you/bridesmaids wore - One friends daughter kept hold of the rings for us. Her and our daughter (just a baby at the time) has brightly coloured tutu's we had made, thanks etsy.

flowers - Didn't bother with them.

what mothers wore - Only DH has one. I can't remember tbh. Something bright, everyone wore bright stuff.

We were pretty chilled about the whole thing, it was about us and our friends enjoying ourselves and having fun.

Pompom42 · 09/05/2018 14:45

Traditional White Wedding and church. Off the shoulder satin bodice and puffy dress.
2 bridesmaids both wore Gold satin.
MIL wore Grey and Pink trouser suit.
My Mum wore Fuschia Dress from Oasis more for someone in their late 20s.
Bought "Grand Prix Roses" in Red.
Left my bouquet at home in all the commotion so had to use bridesmaids one which was exactly the same just a smaller version.
Best man was supposed to be looking after the wedding rings but found out they'd been left at hotel about 2 min before ceremony was due to start. Mad dash back to hotel for Grooms Mum.
Oh and it rained on my wedding day.
Honeymoon in Mexico 4 days after wedding for 2 weeks.
Lovely holiday I'd def go back there.

LagunaBubbles · 09/05/2018 14:45

This is MN OP, it can be like a competition who can do it the cheapest and the plainest at times between some people.

LagunaBubbles · 09/05/2018 14:49

Anyway got married in 1999 where I lived in Scotland and still do. Wore a lovely long and full white dress and groom wore a kilt. And a veil that was set to the back of my head. My best friend was my only bridesmaid and had a blackwatch tartan dress. Had fresh flowers that florist had made me but I decorated the church with bunches of flowers I had bought day before in Aldi. Cake was a traditional royal iced fruit cake, I make cakes now so always wonder what I would do now!

Had a meal and then a disco at night with a buffet. Honeymooned in Tuinisia. Loved all my memories of the day and still do.

Defender90 · 09/05/2018 14:49

Married last September, private ceremony in our suite on the top floor of Bellagio in Las Vegas, just us, his brother, sister in law and the celebrant. Then lunch at Guy Fieri's and a spin on the High Roller bar car (just the girls - boys don't like heights!) fabulous day, we spent 4 days in Vegas then drove Route 66 with side trips to Monument Valley, Sioux Falls and Dallas - was the most perfect three weeks.

I wore linen trousers and a vest top, he wore shorts and a tshirt.

After 18 years together, and both hate being centre of attention is was just what we wanted.

ajandjjmum · 09/05/2018 14:49

wellBehived - well said, although I fail to see why having a 'no bullshit' wedding makes you superior to everyone else.

In the spirit in which the OP asked - I married in 1985, I still think my dress was beautiful, and wish I'd appreciated then how pretty I looked when I was so young! Grin Bridesmaids wore peach (hmmm....). The service was in a beautiful country church on the top of a hill, and we had a lovely reception at a local country hotel for around 100 guests.

Lindy2 · 09/05/2018 14:50

We got married in May 2004.
I wore a cream silk dress from Monsoon. Simple but very lovely.
My 3 bridesmaids wore dark purple long dresses.
My flowers were cream and purple tulips and roses.
We had a few days at home and then went to Lake Garda for a week in a 5* hotel where we put back on all the weight we had lost in preparation for our wedding 😂
We had about 80 day guests and another 20 or so for the evening.
We've just had our 14th wedding anniversay but I remember my wedding day very clearly and fondly.

McTufty · 09/05/2018 14:50

We got married last May with 130 guests! In Warwickshire.

Bridesmaids wore dark blue and had white flowers. I wore a traditional lace dress with a massive train, and also a veil.

My mum wore a grey/silver mother of the bride outfit from LK Bennett (I think), plus a massive hat! Mother in law was in turquoise but went for a fascinator.

I have no regrets at all about having a traditional white wedding - each to their own on their wedding day, but I don’t think any of what we did was “pomp and bullshit” as it was an important commitment for us and we wanted to celebrate the occasion.

user1494409994 · 09/05/2018 14:51

Big off white dress and cathedral length veil (borrowed). 2 bridesmaids (cornflower blue dresses), 2 flower girls (off white). Hand tied tulip bouquets. In church, reception at local hotel with a ceilidh band. 60 people. A lot of laughs on the day because it was actually very relaxed. No honeymoon because we'd only moved in together 2 weeks before the wedding and had lots to do to organise the house.

Trinity66 · 09/05/2018 14:52

We were signing a legal contract so no need for pomp and bullshit

Who ever said romance was dead? Smile

tomhardy · 09/05/2018 14:53

why bother commenting on a thread about weddings if you think making an effort is pointless Confused

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 09/05/2018 14:54

What's morally superior in being such a grump and looking down at such a beautiful and happy day? I feel sorry for people like that!

I got married in Italy (cheaper than the UK), spent 2 weeks there so waited a few months before our honeymoon in the Caribbean. Incredibly luxurious and beautiful 3 weeks in the most amazing resort, I still miss it!

I had a strapless white gown, you couldn't really find anything with sleeve when I got married. I had 3 bridesmaids, in dusty pink floatty midi dresses.

Approx 150 guests - I would have loved a child-free wedding to be honest, but guests wouldn't have traveled to Italy without their kids, so we organised a separate room, entertainment and so on for them.

The wedding wasn't the cheapest, we had an amazing day, I loved my wedding dress and we are still happily married quite a few years later, 4 kids, 2 dogs and a ridiculous mortgage to pay

For the record, when our mortgage actually went through the day we completed on our house, we cracked open a bottle of bubbly when the removal guys left. It was a happy day too!

ILikeMyChickenFried · 09/05/2018 14:55

We were married in 2013

We honeymooned in the Seychelles at the Four Seasons resort.

My flowers were mostly roses and freesias

My one bridesmaid wore a long, dusty pink dress which she chose herself.

We had 17 guests in total.
