Fun post but get a lot of traffic here, AIBU to ask - when you got married, where you honeymooned, what you/bridesmaids wore, flowers, what mothers wore?, approx how many guests. Any nice stories out there 😀

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 09/05/2018 14:59

(disclaimer: I would not fit in it, I 've never been that slim) If i was getting married nowadays, I would quite like a dress like the one worn by Pippa Middleton. Not a fan of the girl, but I found her dress amazing.

Katedotness1963 · 09/05/2018 14:59

1985
We had a tiny wedding. My husband's family live overseas and it would have been too expensive for them to come over.
My wedding dress was the only one in the shop in my size (tiny boutique, north of Scotland, they had one rail of dresses)
Flowers were a gift from an old lady who made silk bouquets as a hobby/pocket money job.
Registry office.
A couple we knew were our best maid and bestman.
We had a meal out with my immediate family then the couple threw us a party at their house.
No honeymoon, couldn't afford it.

Stephisaur · 09/05/2018 15:01

Got married April 2017

Honeymoon was 3 days in LA, 1 week in Maui and 3 days in San Francisco. Maui was amazing, highly recommend it!

I wore a Mori Lee wedding dress. It was a strapless lace ballgown and I still absolutely love it. I wore it with a cathedral length veil.

Bridesmaids were in grey. My Mum wore a Silver/white striped dress with a hat. MIL wore navy blue.

We had about 50 guests in the day time, 100 on the evening.

Flowers were white roses, tulips, gypsophelia and handmade paper flowers.

Loonoon · 09/05/2018 15:07
  1. 1 little bridesmaid in a dress my mum made, no flowers, long white pouffy dress for me. Mum wore a green dress and jacket she made herself than it sounds (nicer than it sounds, an eau de nil shift dress, with a matching longline edge to edge jacket, very nicely fitted). She found a pillbox hat in a charity shop and spreaypainted it to match. It looked lovely. My DH's boss paid for our honeymoon - a week in Rome and a week in Sorrento. We were the youngest at the Sorrento hotel by about 40 years and we were mesmerised by an elderly German couple who were expert ballroom dancers. They dressed up every night in full "Come `Dancing' gear including dresses with gazillions of sequins and net petticoats and would show off their skills on the tiny dance floor. She must have had two massive suitcases for those alone.

For reasons best known to himself DH packed the Oxford English dictionary and a full Ireland football kit which never got worn (never, ever, he doesn't even play football).

Justanothernameonthepage · 09/05/2018 15:08

No honeymoon or bridesmaids (it was a small wedding and if I'd gone down the bridesmaid route it would have been 8 of them). Fil boycotted it, told us a couple of days before meaning his DM and Dss couldn't attend. He also had my SILs step down from the wedding bits we included them in. Mil turned up mid ceremony and was most put out to discover we hadn't noticed. I bought the dress under pressure from my DM and should have changed it for the evening. My speech was left in the room where I was getting ready.
Was still a wonderful day and remembering it brings a smile to my face.

SurlyValentine · 09/05/2018 15:09

Got married last Spring. Had three days in Yorkshire straight after the wedding, then 10 days in Greece later in the summer.

I wore LouLou Bridal (Cecily), with a St.Patrick jacket-y thing for the evening instead of the Cecily over-thing, and the bridesmaids were in tea-length navy blue dresses from House of Fraser (can't remember what make they were).

The flowers were roses, peonies, and a load of other stuff I can't remember, but they were from Frog in Manchester and they were absolutely gorgeous!

Had 80 guests for all day and night - no extras for the evening, if you were invited, you were invited to the whole shooting match.

My mum wore a silvery pale blue dress and coat with shocking pink shoes and accessories. Not really her style but I'd told her to wear whatever she felt comfortable in, but she looked awkward all day. DH's mum didn't come, for reasons best known only to herself.

LadyRoughDiamond · 09/05/2018 15:10

Married in 2008 in church opposite parent's house
Honeymooned in Borneo & KL
Flowers were seasonal and left on my Dads's grave in the churchyard
No bridesmaids, no ushers
120 guests, village fete theme

Wore a gorgeous lace column dress and veil accessorised with... a plaster cast as I broke my arm the week before!*

*if that outs me, say hi!

MadisonAvenue · 09/05/2018 15:15

Got married in 1998
.
No honeymoon as we married in New York where we were already on holiday.

I wore black trousers and a black and grey striped long sleeved t shirt.

Only guests were our baby son, a stranger who I'd approached and asked to be a witness and his wife.

amusedbush · 09/05/2018 15:17

Married in New York in April 2016, stayed for a week so that was our honeymoon.

No guests, no flowers and I wore an ASOS Bridal dress that I bought three weeks before the ceremony (with a discount code! Grin)

Poopooweewee · 09/05/2018 15:19

GameOldBirdz

You have to win the prize for best MN poster trying to appear cool and down to earth while really just coming across as a miserable old bat Grin

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 09/05/2018 15:21

To be fair, I would be downright miserable too if I had to wear a top with parrots on it for any occasion, let alone my wedding day.

SpandexTutu · 09/05/2018 15:24

When - Xmas 22 years ago.
Honeymoon - Lakes and Scotland.
1 bridesmaid.
Average bunch of flowers, but hard to get as there aren't many deliveries over Xmas.
No idea what my mum or mil wore - just suity things with hats.
I wore a tailor made wedding dress as I was heavily pregnant.
60 guests.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 09/05/2018 15:24

Married in Singapore.
Honeymoon in the Maldives.
Registry Office wedding with dinner in the evening for 100 guests.
I wore a Thai silk dress in dramatic colours and a different silk one in the evening.

No bridesmaids.

Janaana · 09/05/2018 15:25

I got married in January 2014. When I asked the church about getting married there as and just moved nearby, they told me it should either be within the next two months or in eighteen months time as there was going to be construction work done between those two times, so we set a date six weeks away and got busy! It was a very homemade wedding.

We didn't have a honeymoon but had a week in Morocco already booked for a month after that, so maybe that was our honeymoon

I wore an off-white dress with a purple velvet underskirt in a 1910s era style (A bit Titanic-y, kind of straight empire line with a short train) and a really long chiffon veil, just a rectangle with semi-circular ends, with a finely crocheted and beaded lace edging and very high silver sandals. I also had a purple velvet short jacket to wear when travelling to the wedding and to the restaurant afterwards. I made the dress and DM made the veil.

I had five bridesmaids aged 3-15 who wore long tutu style dresses I'd made from satin, net and ribbon to match my underskirt. They had cream velvet stoles and wore their own shoes. DB and my dad made small ribbon bows that went on a piece of feathery stuff as ornaments on their dresses and hairslides.

I had a posy of of white roses with purple tulips and pussy willow buds all bought from M&S, so not really planned until the day before and the wedding party all had the same roses as buttonholes, with one of the little bows like the bridesmaids' outfits.

My mother wore a lilac mother of the bride outfit wth matching shoes and giant hat and DH's mum wore a navy swirly/floral chiffon dress with a furry navy bolero and navy shoes.

We had thirty guests and all went for a meal in a local Indian restaurant we'd hired as it was near the church and we were worried about bad weather and also any guests using public transport, who might find it hard to get to a meal anywhere else. We were lucky though as the owner of the restaurant was actually a wedding caterer too and only looking after the restaurant himself as it was between managers. They looked after us well and actually used photos of the restaurant set up for our wedding on their menu!

travelinterest · 09/05/2018 15:29

Another thing... in years gone by you always got photos of all couples/families taken on the church door as they arrived to the wedding. It's a nice memento. Has anyone else noticed the decline of this? Or request their photographer to do it. It's one way to remember everyone there

OP posts:
ikeepaforkinmypurse · 09/05/2018 15:31

I have seen photos of people leaving the church after the ceremony, but not arriving? They might have been replaced by the group shot taken from above, most recent weddings seem to have one.

FluffyPersian · 09/05/2018 15:36

I'm getting married in July this year Smile We're getting married in North Yorkshire with ruins.

Wearing a black dress
With a black veil
Bouquet of white lilies and black baccara roses (very dark red) with ivy
4 bridesmaids who I've given £100 to each and told them to buy whatever red dress suits them as they're all different body shapes

Walking myself up the isle
Giving the only speech
Our wedding favours are biscuits with our cats face on them
We have personalised confetti on the tables that have our cats face on them
Our cake will be a surprise, made by a really good friend (who's amazing at making them and I don't care what she does as it will be delicious)
75 guests
Honeymooning in Yorkshire and doing a 'tour' of Michelin starred restaurants (as we're both foodies).

.... We're having a 'pie' theme as I proposed to my fiance with a ring in one hand, and a pie in the other... so it's a massive buffet of pies, pies and more pies Smile

I'm really hoping someone wears white / proposes / announces their pregnancy so I can play 'Wedding bingo', however sadly none of the people coming are like that, so I imagine the actual day will be a bit boring...... Hmm Grin

Doilooklikeatourist · 09/05/2018 15:38

Honeymooned in Barbados
Watched 4 weddings and a funeral before going out for dinner and drinks with 4 friends for my Hen Do

liz70 · 09/05/2018 15:39

Married in 1998.
Only guests were our parents plus 5 weeks gestation DD1 to be
No flowers ordered in, just what was in the room in the Registry Office.
My dress was a pale blue, satin, sleeveless, knee length shift dress, with all over small white leaf and stem embroidery. I think it cost £35 from Etam. Worn with white stockings and shoes.
My mum wore a royal blue jacket and skirt set with white top. I think MIL wore an orange/brown dress.
We all went for a Chinese over the road afterwards.

SprinkleSomeSparkles · 09/05/2018 15:39

Oh I love weddings! We got married 2016 in November, an evening evening wedding ceremony started at six. I wore a white sweetheart princess dress, bridesmaids had different style dresses but same colour. Two flower girls, very chilled but not missing the traditional speeches, first dance etc we had a BBQ and sparklers.
The best thing about weddings is how different each and every one is!

SprinkleSomeSparkles · 09/05/2018 15:39

Oh and we honeymooners just before Christmas in vegas, was amazing!

Crowd · 09/05/2018 15:42

Wow @gameoldbirdz what a miserable existence you must have. When we paid off our mortgage we were quite deflated at the lack of celebration from the bank!

Anyway weddings:
Married 2013
Wore an inspired by Kate Middleton dress with lace sleeves and it was a bit pouffy! Fab.
4 adult bridesmaids in purple
2 flower girls in a light purple
60 day guests, around 130 night
Whole thing done at a hotel.
Honeymoon in Benidorm 😂 In our defence we had booked that in the January and he asked me to get married in the February. We married in the June. We had a great time.
The men wore tails.
We also had a table magician and a Baileys Fountain.

Great day!

userabcname · 09/05/2018 15:43

Married in 2016.
Honeymooned in Iceland (in December).
I wore a dropped waist ivory wedding dress and a faux fur stole.
Bridesmaids wore a deep wine red full length dress.
Flowers were seasonal and included berries and feathers.
Mother wore a navy and cream outfit, MIL wore a pink dress, both had hats.
Had 50 day guests and 70 evening guests.
The best part of my wedding was announcing my pregnancy with our first child (no one knew). A lovely moment.

Fintress · 09/05/2018 15:43

Married a few years ago - cream knee length 50's style dress, bouquet of sweet peas and roses. No guests, just the two of us at city hall NYC. Honeymoon to the Maldives 6 months later when it was the right season for it.
