To break up with my personal trainer?

Handthatrocksthecradlerulesthe · 06/05/2018 18:14

I work flexible hours so I can start work quite long but still have to do a full day.

I keep asking for 6am slots (like I used to have!) and he says those slots are too busy now.

Aibu because technically I could do later, I just don’t want to?

Also he’s not updated my training program since January.

Your last point alone is reason enough to ditch him!!!

Pippylou · 06/05/2018 18:19

Yes, he's being a lazy so & so...

Are you meeting your goals? Is he interacting & assessing progress?

Bumply · 06/05/2018 18:24

There's no reason why you'd have to stay with a particular PT if they can't do the hours that suit you better. And certainly not if they don't change up your program inline with your progression or just to switch it up to prevent boredom.

FlirtyRomanticToast · 06/05/2018 18:26

Agree with PP, if you're still doing the same workout as five months ago then you're not getting anything out of your sessions whatsoever. What a waste of money! How can such a crap personal trainer be in such demand?

My DH is my personal trainer though so maybe take my advice with a pinch of salt! 😁

Handthatrocksthecradlerulesthe · 06/05/2018 18:28

I’ve askrd numerous times if we can measure my body fat and it’s always “next week”. 3 weeks has gone by.

It’s just going to be so awkward to “break up”

PatchworkElmer · 06/05/2018 18:31

I wouldn’t use him any more. Just say you’re going to try training on your own for a while if you want to minimise the awkwardness?

Moominfan · 06/05/2018 18:31

Oh my god yes! Pt sessions aren't cheap get rid

Handthatrocksthecradlerulesthe · 06/05/2018 18:32

I have lost quite a lot of weight with him and my body has changed due to weight training - never done it before.

But I still have a lot more to lose (2-2.5 stone) and my weight has stayed the same since probably December.

So I’m not being unreasonable about the times? It’s just nice to get into work and leave leave by 3/4. Everyone else does so it’s very lonely and quiet come 5

Is it just me or do so many trainers not want to train clients at 6am or 6.30am? I've had problems with a couple of trainers not wanting the early starts (I can understand - I don't want to get up that early either but it's the only time I can train and not be late for work) and they just come up with excuses. The only trainer I found who is happy to train at 6.30am is unfortunately not a very good trainer (enthusiam doesn't compensate for lack of experience unfortunately).

I think it's time to find a new trainer OP.

Handthatrocksthecradlerulesthe · 06/05/2018 18:49

He does train at 6 though. I noticed a woman who used to train at the same time as me at 6 and she had a pt. Her pt has now left the gym.

I saw her with my pt in my usual slot. So I got bumped to accommodate her basically.

He is not providing the service you are paying him for ie not updating your training plan and no longer having availability at the times you want to train.
Most PTs depending on what area you are in charge a minimum of £30 with most charging more , its alot of money to be paying for a service that does not suit you.

It doesnt have to be awkward, just talk to him at your next session or phone or message him and say that you its not working out for you as you need someone to available to train at a particular time and he is not available at that time and you want someone to push you further by keeping your training plan etc up to date. You can keep it friendly.

Re the lack of weight loss, regardless of what is happening with your PT, suggest looking at your calorie intake and your nutrition, if you are not losing, you are not in a deficit regardless of how much exercise you are doing and that is something only you can control, not your PT.
(unless you have medical issue hindering weight loss)

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/05/2018 19:29

So he's bumped you?? That's not nice. Do you think it's because she can only train at 6am whereas he knows you can do later (even though you'd prefer not to)?

Have you actually spoken to him about this? I'm usually pretty direct with my trainers. You're paying for a service. Tell him what you want and and if he can't do that, ask for your money back for your remaining sessions and find a new trainer.

Handthatrocksthecradlerulesthe · 06/05/2018 19:31

Just think his nutrition plan sucks. It’s just oatmeal and chicken. literally every day.

I could write up that exact same plan having zero qualifications in that field.

I’ve messaged him and he’s not responded. Definitely gonna be awkward

Most PTs (altho things are changing) have no/very minimal nutrition qualifications,
for the same price you are paying your PT for his unsatisfactory service you could pay to see a Dietician and get yourself a proper calorie controlled meal plan taking into account your likes/dislikes and abilities in the kitchen/time constraints etc

Im not saying stop going to PT, im just saying you could use the cost of a couple of sessions to get your nutrition under control and get an easy to manage personalised diet to follow and track in order to get yourself in a deficit for weight loss.

Re the message sent and awkwardness, you gave him fair warning, youve been asking for almost a month now for him to update your plan. You've done the right thing by putting yourself first in order to achieve your goals.

Pippylou · 06/05/2018 19:41

I have the qualifications and indeed you could! :-)

That's bodybuilding-type bro food stuff...

He's not providing you with the service you're paying for, don't feel bad.

SabineUndine · 07/05/2018 11:15

‘Break up with’ your personal trainer? WTF? He’s not a boyfriend, he’s your employee. If you aren’t happy with him find someone better.

Pippylou · 07/05/2018 13:23

I had a think about this and I think he may already have moved on!

I used to be in the PT FB groups but hated the mentality of some trainers, if he isn't getting results, he's blaming you, not changing your programmes, etc.

TonTonMacoute · 07/05/2018 13:32

You are feeling like you are getting value for your money, I wouldn’t definitely be looking around for someone better.

TonTonMacoute · 07/05/2018 13:32

*are not feeling

TonTonMacoute · 07/05/2018 13:33

*would be looking (gaaah)

SilverySurfer · 07/05/2018 14:15

I would be sacking him, not breeing up with him.

TERFragetteCity · 07/05/2018 14:18

I'd have gone after this.

LannieDuck · 07/05/2018 14:20

Its not awkward, you need a PT who can give you a 6m slot. He can't, so you need to find someone else. It's not personal.

magoria · 07/05/2018 16:17

He has decided a new client is more important so can have the slot she wants than you as an existing client.

He isn't making you feel like a valued client. Find someone who does and deserves your hard earned cash more.
