AIBU to think in the UK women generally dress in quite a frumpy way and to wish we wore period clothing.

Just that really. People don’t seem to make an effort and if you do you end up looking ‘overdressed’.

The reason I say UK is because that’s where I’m based and other places I’m seeing as a tourist or on tv, so maybe not a realistic impression. Not that they are worse than anyone else.

I love clothes.
I have loads and loads.
I love a bit of 40s & 50s. But I wouldn't go the whole hog. Too bloody uncomfortable.
Despite loving clothes and being obsessed I still don't care what other people wear.
I think its sensible to be dressed for the occasion so you don't get too hot/cold/uncomfortable/are unsafe.
But people should wear what makes them feel comfortable and happy.
My clothes make me happy. Even when I was a shy teen I wouldn't allow anyone to tell me what to wear. Its one of the few things I have always been assertive about.
I am not going to dictate what anyone else wears.

Or wear black tie yourself...

It amazes me the things some people get riled about on MN. And I'm not talking about the OP who just posted an idle thought about the way people dress today compared to times past.
The amount of posters jumping down her throat, taking huge umbrage and making spiteful petty comments is crazy. As for the poster who said the OP needs to see a therapist........ Shock

JamesBlonde1 · 07/05/2018 20:37

I know what you mean OP.

I’m no stylista, in fact I’m too plump to look cool/funky. I find it particularly difficult to look “good” in the summer.

I think plumps like me show too much flesh, where I try to cover up - arms and legs. I don’t like showing the bits I don’t like the look of.

One example is shorts. I hate my thighs and knees. My MIL said well wear long shorts or the 3 quarter type. To me, that just enhances my fat cankles and makes my legs look shorter. I have yet to see anyone look “good” in them. I’m not saying they’re not comfortable or someone wearing them doesn’t care what I think, that’s fair enough. Not for me though.

But, I wouldn’t say that to anyone, I just keep my opinion to myself. Other than on MN of course!

Which period?!
I never know what to wear when I go out. I pine for 1995. I totally knew what I was doing then.

user1485342611 · 07/05/2018 21:02

I think 50s fashion was lovely. All those beautiful dresses with swishy skirts. Women always seem to look beautiful in 1950s photographs.

Olddear · 07/05/2018 21:06

Nothing wrong in looking smart. I don't think being 'pulled together' is over rated at all.

paxillin · 07/05/2018 21:26

Well, I take from your lack of username that you are a relative noob, @user1485342611. People take umbrage because many mnetters are feminist and the moan about frumpy women is inherently sexist.

OP is a very special petal, too, because she believes people should dress to please her: I mean people look so rumpled and scruffy. It affects me in that I have to look at it. This does get the deserved "get lost" response.

And she makes sweeping assumptions about a whole country, plenty of stuff there, and all of it designed to insult. Deliberate goadiness isn't badly wanted on MN.

Olddear · 07/05/2018 21:29

In the interests of equality, there are a lot of badly dressed men around too.

user1485342611 · 07/05/2018 21:32

Nope not new at all Paxillin. Had to re-register after some glitch and got stuck with the user number combo.

Lots of people pine for the days when people dressed more smartly and wish times were still like that. The OP didn't say anything particularly nasty or specify a particular person or group of people. It was a general comment on the more casual and less smart way that people dress nowadays.
It's something that becomes more obvious on hot days, because we're not really geared for hot weather dressing.
