To run the tap while I brush my teeth

even though I live in Scotland where it rains a lot and I don't get charged for water anyway?

It's ridiculous to swallow so much toothpaste. It's full of nasties like fluoride (toxic, much like chlorine).

EleanorHooverbelt · 06/05/2018 17:41

My shower is electric (a Mira) when I turn it off and on again, it is red-hot, scalding, then goes icy, then seems to adjust to the temp on the dial. It takes a couple of minutes of being unable to use it.

Why on earth would you leave toothpaste on your teeth. Too much fluoride is extremely harmful, not to mention the taste!

JassyRadlett · 06/05/2018 17:44

You don’t swallow it. You spit it out, but you don’t rinse it off.

GlitterGlue · 06/05/2018 17:48

Because actual dentists recommend it? Once you’ve spat out the toothpaste there is only a small amount left.

EleanorHooverbelt · 06/05/2018 17:51

I thought mouthwashes were to help the teeth after brushing? And the breath, of course.

It's like washing your body and not rinsing.

My husband gets, crazy annoyed about me doing this. I wet brush, turn tap off, brush all over, spit, turn tap on to rinse brush, then brush again with water - so tap is on while im doing my second water brush because I'm dipping the brush in every few seconds. I dont like the feeling of toothpaste or food residue on my teeth either.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/05/2018 18:07

Does no one actually listen to the advice their dentist gives them?
You spit you DO NOT rinse with water. Rinsing is as stupid as putting sun cream on your skin then immediately washing it off with water.

You also DO NOT brush your teeth and then use mouth wash straight after.

My dentist has never told me this. Never. Will mention it next visit though!

I didn't know toothpaste was there to leave a protective film. I thought it was used for cleansing, in the way that soap is. Obviously, I've been ignorant of all this new information.

Isn't it enough that we have fluoride in the water?

Whisky2014 · 06/05/2018 18:22

Ive always rinsed toothpaste. Youre not supposed to swallow it which you would if you leave it in your mouth

Aria2015 · 06/05/2018 18:30

I do this but I try so hard not to. Somehow I just do it on autopilot but it is wasteful and as soon as I realise I've done it, I turn it off. I think I'm going to write myself a reminder note on the bathroom mirror to remind myself!

picklemepopcorn · 06/05/2018 18:32

NHS advice....

EleanorHooverbelt · 06/05/2018 19:01

Thanks, pickle.

Is flossing in or out now? I thought I heard recently that they were backtracking on the need for flossing now? I need to keep up with this stuff or I'll have no teeth left Smile

I brush my teeth in the shower Blush find I get it all over myself if I try and do it at a sink!

counterpoint · 06/05/2018 20:00

Because actual dentists recommend it.

Dentists do/say what the big pharma companies tell them to.

counterpoint · 06/05/2018 20:04

Turning showers off and on is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. What an enormous waste of coal/gas-produced energy.

The more water you dilute the soap with the better for the environment that the waste enters into later.

Stop thinking of the profiteering water companies and think of the rivers getting polluted and the fact we need more clean water entering them.

BrutusMcDogface · 06/05/2018 20:09

I genuinely thought everybody left the water running when brushing teeth... I’ve never even thought about it! I obviously feel sufficiently shamed about it now though blush

I genuinely thought NOBODY still did this! Grin you live and learn, hey.

DairyisClosed · 06/05/2018 20:11

This is why people should be charged for water (and everything). When people aren't recurve to pay for the things they use they end up taking the piss.

MyNewAlias · 06/05/2018 20:16

My DH dies this and it really annoys me. I normally turn off the tap while he is brushing. His no brained logic is that he pays for the water so he can waste it if he wants. I normally reply that he has paid for the groceries as well, does he want me to flush them down the toilet?

helacells · 06/05/2018 20:16

You don't get charged for water?!
