I like it, but then in movie format I do prefer a more singing/talking style than a west end musical style and vice versa if going to a musical. Most people who sing have admirers and those who dislike.

Peterrabbitscarrots · 06/05/2018 09:51

YABU! Obviously even if he couldn’t sing I’d be sticking up for him anyway Grin

SideOrderofSprouts · 06/05/2018 09:52

Blasphemy

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 06/05/2018 09:53

Well the evidence says otherwise, his voice is OK, not magnificent but in no way unbearable.

Unsure123123 · 06/05/2018 09:53

I don't really care! He'll do very nicely.

He can dance, act, he looks fine and he seems to be one hell of a lovely bloke.

ittakes2 · 06/05/2018 09:54

I think he can

KnittedBobbleHat · 06/05/2018 09:54

He was good in Oklahoma. Not in les mis though

TheStoic · 06/05/2018 09:56

He is perfect, so I guess that means YABU.

Slartybartfast · 06/05/2018 09:57

He is enthusiastic I grant you

YANBU.

He means well, and he works hard- but he just doesn't have a strong, natural voice.

I always skip the first couple of minutes of From Now On. Great song, ruined (again) by letting Hugh sing most of it.

Boulshired · 06/05/2018 10:04

The two green lit showman videos on YouTube always guarantee me a smile, I adore him just for them.

milkjetmum · 06/05/2018 10:05

Have you dared to hear his Elvis impersonating Elvis in happy feet? Yet still, yabu what he lacks in vocals he makes up for in charisma...

Ilovewheelychairs · 06/05/2018 10:06

I actually think that it’s the songs he’s singing aren’t right for his voice. There are a couple of moments in the later part of From Now On where his voice suddenly sounds fantastic for a few seconds and I think ‘wow he actually can sing’.

Personally for me it’s ‘Never Enough’ that grates. Boring song and the terrible swooping ALL THE TIME makes me wince. Always have to skip that one. She’s supposed to be an opera singer and yet I won’t even let my school choir sing as badly as that!!

AnnDerry · 06/05/2018 10:08

I think it's the material.

He was amazing in Oklahoma.

WilyMinx · 06/05/2018 10:13

I love HJ but did think his singing was terrible in The Greatest Showman. In his duet with Zac Efron, Zac's voice is miles better. Even the kids' singing outshines his.

romany4 · 06/05/2018 10:24

You are clearly insane.
I LOVE Greatest Showman. Hugh could sit there and sing to me all day. I'd be in heaven

AuntJobiska · 06/05/2018 10:30

And there it is - the problem with musicals. Generally speaking, it seems that singers aren't the greatest actors, and actors aren't the greatest singers (and great sopranos, tenors etc. aren't usually the correct age for the fictional character they're playing). In the case of Grease, you had the whole lot: a leading man who couldn't sing, a leading woman who could neither dance nor act, and nearly all the cast were at least ten years past their teenage years. I think you've got to be a bit forgiving if you engage with a musical!

BalloonSlayer · 06/05/2018 10:37

I think his voice is a bit bleaty, but it sounds "real" if you know what I mean.

He spent years in musical theatre before making it in Hollywood, and his voice is an adequate, reliable, tuneful pleasant one rather than one that would win him the X-factor.

To be in musicals you need to be able to act, sing and dance to a certain standard, which he can, without being absolutely fantastic at any one of them - a "good all-rounder," one would say.

To be a headliner in a Hollywood musical you usually have to be outstanding at all those things, which he isn't, but he is good enough and I find that a breath of fresh air TBH.

FamilyOhNo · 06/05/2018 10:38

Love Greatest Showman and HJ

however it's not because it's great singing.... It's just a great whole package of enjoyment all round.

TheStoic · 06/05/2018 10:39

I think you've got to be a bit forgiving if you engage with a musical!

Very true. I think all musicals require a suspension of disbelief on pretty much every level.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/05/2018 10:39

His singing was awful in Les Miserables Grin Really grating.

CoraPirbright · 06/05/2018 10:42

I think he def can sing but some songs suit him better than others. Also I am sure that there must be an element of personal taste involved too? For example, Sporty Spice & Katie Perry - generally accepted to be good singers but I simply can't abide their voices! One has a horrid tone , the other sounds constantly shouty & strained to my ears at least.

WheelyCote · 06/05/2018 10:46

Lurve Hugh Jackman and even singing!
He's an actor that gives it all ago and never stuck to an action or musical genre.
He's fab!!

MinesaPinot · 06/05/2018 10:50

Despite loving both Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe as actors, I have to say that I was very underwhelmed with their singing in Les Mis.

Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne on the other hand I though were excellent.

IceBearRocks · 06/05/2018 10:51

Do you know what I hated about The Greatest Showman ...... At no point does Hugh take off his shirt.... Travesty !!!!
