To be annoyed that my washing will be ruined

Just opened all the windows in the house and realised that our next door neighbours are having a BBQ...At 9am.
It’s onviously the first time they’ve used it this year as it’s bellowing smelly smoke, that I initially thought was a bonfire.
I have two loads of washing on the line.
I actually quite like the smell of bonfires (although in this case it’s a BBQ) so wouldn’t normally be bothered but I’m a bit pissed off that the two loads I was up early to do will be ruined!

Wow AlleyG I'd say the only antisocial one around here is you!

'Pot' and 'black' spring to mind

Madbengalmum · 06/05/2018 10:19

AlleyG, with you all the way.

Melamin · 06/05/2018 10:24

Thankfully my barbequing neighbours have moved on. Can't stand the smell of barbeque lighting fluid [boak]

expatinscotland · 06/05/2018 10:26

'It's rude! They should've knocked and let you know to get it in.'

Then there'd a thread on here about how the neighbours woke her on a Sunday morning and a tirade of abuse.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 06/05/2018 10:26

I’m LOL at people thinking having a BBQ is antisocial Hmm my Turkish inlaws BBQ the vast majority of there food all year round, as do all there neighbours.

Eggzandbacon · 06/05/2018 10:27

I’m with @alleyg it’s bloody constant all summer.
I know someone who cooks all their meals outside in the summer, I bet their neighbours hate it.

DeadButDelicious · 06/05/2018 10:27

Our neighbours have had their wood burner going, resulting in a couple of loads of smokey washing. Very annoying.

I am low key loving the idea of a bbq Sunday morning fry up though...

TheFairyCaravan · 06/05/2018 10:30

I’m with AlleyG too.

We used to have neighbours who barbecued cheap, fatty sausage and burgers all Summer and it stank.

gummywitch · 06/05/2018 10:31

Absolutely with you, AlleyG. People who have bbqs or bonfires, oblivious to the effects on neighbouring households, give me the rage. They clearly don't give a toss about anyone but themselves. Have never had a child struggle to breathe with asthma from the smoke which permeates everything. And seem to do only when the wind is facing away from their homes, so they don't have a stinky house or stinky washing. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Go to the fecking woods!

Aragog · 06/05/2018 10:31

Rather have the odd smell of a BBQ than the constant sound of lawns being cut and edged that we have most of a sunny weekend.

To be fair our bbq didn't really smoke much and the new gas one we've got even less so. And ours is tucked away round the corner so no smoke goes over any of the neighbours at all. Had considered bbq for breakfast but forgot to get the meat out of the freezer yesterday.

Bettyfood · 06/05/2018 10:31

Barbecuing in the morning is highly anti-social. No BBQs or lawn-mowing before 12pm on a Sunday. I love the smell of collective barbecues on a warm day but not at 9am.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 06/05/2018 10:32

Christ, some strong reactions to a BBQ.

We let our neighbours know so they can close their windows if they like but I pay my mortgage and if I want to have a BBQ I damn well will. Hardly antisocial in my own back garden.

9am is hardly the norm but it will be fine surely, leave it out all day and the bbq smell will have long gone!

ToadOfSadness · 06/05/2018 10:34

I find the smell of burning flesh very unpleasant, to be faced with it when I had just got up would make me feel Envy (not envy, not one tiny bit).

Our neighbour fortunately moved his flesh burner away from the house a bit but it still gets in through the windows and any gaps in the house, grease and fuel is also horrible.

Springnowplease · 06/05/2018 10:42

Hardly antisocial in my own back garden.

Of course it is if the neighbours get the smoke and the smell. Maybe I should keep smelly pigs and tell the neighbours that's not antisocial either.

reddressblueshoes · 06/05/2018 10:53

I was really surprised in Australia to discover all their BBQs are gas- there is way less smell, and they also have much bigger gardens. I think the UK garden-to-charcoal-BBQ ratio must be the most antisocial in the world.

I think 9am is too early, but a sunny bank holiday afternoon is probably one of the most reasonable times to have one. However a bbq every weekend in summer is the kind of thing I think is only acceptable if
You have your own land and the smell is unlikely to reach your neighbours.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 06/05/2018 10:58

What else is antisocial as well? Letting your kids play? Hanging your washing? Mowing you lawn? Sitting outside? God forbid anyone makes a noise.

Anyone who gets so worked up about a BBQ is ridiculous, just hope no one gets so offended next time you want to have a drink in your garden, or let your pet out, or let your kids play out. It’s a two way street.

Let’s all come in and sit in silence with beans on toast and admire the weather from afar. God forbid we’re anti social and actually living life!

KitanaKay · 06/05/2018 10:59

I can understand that a BBQ at 9am is anti social, but an odd BBQ in your back garden during the summer is a perfectly reasonable thing to do. Genuinely surprised at some of what I’m reading on this thread.

TheFirstMrsOsmond · 06/05/2018 11:00

AlleyG I think we're soul mates

BBTHREE76 · 06/05/2018 11:07

YANBU op. For me it’s more about the timing of the BBQ. When the weathers nice (and as nice weather is so rare round here) I get all my washing in for about 4pm as I know the neighbours may well have teatime and night time BBQs, if I leave it later then it stinks of smoke it’s my fault. But 9am is a pi@@take time to have a BBQ IMO, and lots of neighbours will have washing on the line.

Rudgie47 · 06/05/2018 11:08

They are really horrible anyway, nothing for veggies/vegans bar warm salads and having to sit there smelling stinking meat.
Also the meat is never cooked through anyway, waste of time IMO.

Meadowflowers · 06/05/2018 11:10

This completely winds me up and pisses me right off. We have a family of travellers that live at the top of our hill and they're always burning rubbish. I love drying the washing outside and look forward to summer to do it but it gets spoilt by this! The council won't do anything as they just ignore them.

ourkidmolly · 06/05/2018 11:12

It's worse having neighbours that cook curry every day. That goes on all year and permeates everything. I like curry.

interrobangbang · 06/05/2018 11:13

I'm with @AlleyG and I also hope they get the runs off sausages that are pink in the middle w d burnt on the outside.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 06/05/2018 11:13

I think the UK garden-to-charcoal-BBQ ratio must be the most antisocial in the world.

Nah - when I lived in Canada, in the buildings with more permissive management committees, they'd BBQ on their balconies - no matter how small.

TBH I don't mind people BBQing, or kids yelling, or even a bit of lawnmowing or leaf-blowing other people exist, trying to make them be so quiet and non-intrusive seems pretty ridiculous.

Eolian · 06/05/2018 11:15

They are really horrible anyway, nothing for veggies/vegans bar warm salads and having to sit there smelling stinking meat.

Depends who is making the bbq. Ours had lovely veggie kebabs and whole roast beetroot on it yesterday, with new potatoes and homemade red cabbage coleslaw as a side, and there weren't even any vegetarians there.
