Sick of my colleagues quoting Friends?

The tv show. I loved the show as much as the next person.

But honestly they quote something from it every day. It’s just not funny hearing it repeated and it’s so old!

It has, though. It's just shit. It's aged worse than I have since having a kid. But Frasier is still great.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 16:14

I never watched frasier when it first aired but I have watched it about 3 times over since they started showing it on ch4 in the mornings. On first watch I thought it was ok. Second watch I thought it funny and third watch all I keep thinking is how horrendous a character frasier is. He’s hateful!!

PoorYorick · 05/05/2018 16:35

He's very flawed, but that's one of the things I like about the show. He comes a cropper in almost every episode and it's usually deserved. I also liked the realism of the characters' relationships. They're all flawed, so they all have some proper gritty tension, but they still develop over time.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 16:42

Yes thats true. Marty Crane was definitely my favourite.

PoorYorick · 05/05/2018 16:47

Marty was SUCH a great character. And SO well disposed to play off his snobby sons. And not without his own faults too! They were real characters! The whole cast was so talented too.

And Roz and Daphne! What a pair of feminist icons. Roz, career woman in charge of her own sexuality who doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks and is a terrific single mother. Daphne, in a caring profession, absolutely essential to the family and keeps Marty in line when he needs it.

Love it.

WomanEqualsAdultHumanFemale · 05/05/2018 16:52

Yes R and D were fantastic too. Episode on yesterday where frasier hurt his back and doorbell rings. He yells that his housekeeper isn’t there to answer the door. Eventually opens the door and it’s Daphne. She says, unimpressed, “I’m a physical therapist!” Grin

@CadyHeron

shiny - makes you realise why all the comedies on telly now are utter shite, doesn't it? People take far too much offence at everything! Grin

Absolutely THIS Cady ^ Far too much leftie snowflakism, taking the fun and laughter out of EVERYthing, and get offended at every fucking last tiny innocuous thing!

Proper mood-hoovers some people are, getting offended at everything and anything!

What's the problem @pooryorick ??? Surely you don't need it explaining to you ???

It is someone as young as 15 seeing homophobia and racism and sexism where there IS none. I swear some people LOOK for things to be offended by. I feel desperately sorry for anyone who finds FRIENDS homophobic, sexist, and racist. Christ on a bike! What a sad sad, existence! Sad

Thank God we still have the happy memories of old comedies from before the 2010's. And all of the originals on DVD. And thank God we have netflix. Netflix isn't afraid to push the boundaries and gives zero fucks about political correctness.

pooryorick

Friends has become rancid vinegar.

No it has NOT. You could not be more wrong, you could try, but you would not be successful......... Hmm

What's more, nobody is forcing you to watch it, and there's no need to look down your nose at people who DO enjoy it! Hmm

And that IS what you are doing.

And saying Blackadder is fine but Friends isn't, just makes you look disingenuous, and frankly, a bit silly. Wink

Fortunately, this thread is living proof that lots of mumsnetters like a good giggle, and aren't offended by sod-all, seeing as there are only several sad little politically-correct, leftie, mood-hoovers on here!

PoorYorick · 05/05/2018 17:02

Haha, yes, that's Daphne...not taking his snobby crap. My favourite character was Niles though. Scene stealer every time.

I can most definitely see why some of the jokes would seem off-colour to a young person today, and I don't think they're entirely wrong.

What's more, nobody is forcing you to watch it, and there's no need to look down your nose at people who DO enjoy it! hmm

I'm not looking down on people who enjoy it. I'm saying I think it's shit.

And that IS what you are doing.

No it's not. I'm saying I think it's shit, and has aged badly, and I can see why a teenager today wouldn't find it funny. I called the show 'rancid vinegar'. I didn't call you anything.

If you're going to take it as a personal insult that I don't like your favourite TV programme, well, to quote your articulate and occasionally screaming self: "I swear some people LOOK for things to be offended by."

And saying Blackadder is fine but Friends isn't, just makes you look disingenuous, and frankly, a bit silly.

No, that's just me being right.

UserV · 05/05/2018 17:09

Can't remember which episode it was, but Ross with the leather pants was funny. Grin

So was the one with his tan, and the one with his teeth. Grin

I think Ross has had some very funny lines and scenes.

@PoorYorick

Lighten up and get a grip FFS. Hmm

I bet you're a fucking blast at parties aren't you?! Wink

And no you are NOT right. Don't be so fucking arrogant. You are sounding ridiculous now.

I literally cannot talk to you anymore. You're pathetic. I am ignoring you now.

See ya! Hmm

PoorYorick · 05/05/2018 17:12

shinycat, please don't use the 'mention' function to get my attention, it clogs up my email.

I like the post otherwise, though.

shinycat · 05/05/2018 17:13

@nawnee2

The thing is OP, there is a friends situation for everything in life. I was in a cafe in Mexico a few years ago with my American friend and I wanted to ask for the bill, so I called out to the waiter and said, excuse me, the bill, the check, la Cuenta? And my friend said immediately, paper, snow, a ghost. We laughed hard and still remind each other to this day.

For every situation in life , you can refer back to friends

DEFINITELY this. ^ Grin

So many amazing funny lines. Best American sitcom ever IMO.

UserV · 05/05/2018 17:20

@TheMattressKing

11 year old son has recently discovered Friends, he's watched it 3 times through on Netflix and watches repeats on television too, there's been a lot of Friends on in our house recently - he now quotes the lines before they are said on the program. True convert.

Funny you should say that, my 2 kids discovered 'Friends' a bit later too, and so did my 2 nephews and 1 niece (all 5 were born mid to late 1990's.)

All 5 caught all the episodes in the early 2010's, when they a wee bit older (mid teens,) several years after it finished, and have all watched every episode many times.

They absolutely love it, and still rate it as one of the funniest things they have ever seen. And like many on here, they regularly quote the lines Smile

CadyHeron · 05/05/2018 17:21

Totally just read that in Russ's voice Grin
