To think well done for the RNLI for sacking people with naked women mugs

Totally not acceptable to have naked women mugs at work! I applaud them. Nick Ferrari is raising my blood pressure minimising such behaviour.

I've never worked anywhere where naked women imagery is acceptable, even if they are covering their modesty

@Joanna57

Sounds like a female volunteer got a tad offended then.

Oh for God's sake, there was obviously terrible bullying going on. Is that really so difficult to work out from the RNLI statement?

Zebra31 · 04/05/2018 09:34

Total over reaction. People not drowning at sea vs people drowning at sea because of a couple of joke mugs. I know which I prefer

Singlenotsingle · 04/05/2018 09:38

Agree absolutely Yorkshire yummy mummy. Women can be every bit as crude and sexist as men. Really we ought to get rid of the Chippendales, as the behaviour of the women in the audience is disgraceful! And as for The Full Monty..... well!!!

WhiskeyStone · 04/05/2018 09:38

Ridiculous overreaction.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/05/2018 09:38

Pretty sure loads of artists were total misogynists. Loads of actors and musicians certainly are and still produce great work. But lots of art that we see in museums was produced at the time when it was fine to be a misogynist; women were lesser creatures after all.

Fortunately for us we live in more enlightened times where we can legally expect to go to work and not be objectified or intimidated.

And honestly, I don't care if these men were manning lifeboats, any more than I would care if they were police officers or firefighters or in the armed forces. Womens' equality is non negotiable, not just something that happens if those amazing brave men deign to agree to it.

Singlenotsingle · 04/05/2018 09:42

Can you see postilions of women stepping up to the mark and volunteering to train and work as a lifeguard on zero pay? No, me neither!

GnotherGnu · 04/05/2018 09:48

What's "the PC Brigade"? People always blame this nebulous entity for things they don't like, but never manage to explain what they're talking about.

Gilead · 04/05/2018 09:49

Yeah, far more important to be PC than to save lives... FFS
Alternatively one could be both.
Oh and it's about respect, and dismissing it as PC shows a lack of.

Birdsgottafly · 04/05/2018 09:51

@Juells, that is one of the strangest AC, I've ever had.

The attitude on here reflects why so many people are having to constantly campaign to get rape seen as a War Crime. Why Sportsmen think they can do what they want to any Woman that goes near them. It's only one step away from what happened at the Dinner were Women were sexually assaulted. Whatever you do as a job, doesn't allow you to abuse other people.

It the Mugs were Racist, there wouldn't be an issue over them being sacked, but, once again, Women should just take it, because "that's what Men do".

The insults directed towards Men from women don't compare, with what's used against Women. We are attacked for our Sexual behavior, how we look, whether we have children or not (both can be wrong) and then how we probably smell etc.

Any female Manager shouldn't be subjected to that, just because she has done her job. This is also about a Woman having to fight for her position to be taken seriously.

PotTheRed · 04/05/2018 09:55

This is one of those stories where you are daft if you think you know what happened and whether them being ‘sacked’ was reasonable or not.

It’s half a story.

Birdsgottafly · 04/05/2018 09:55

"Can you see postilions of women stepping up to the mark and volunteering to train and work as a lifeguard on zero pay? No, me neither!"

There are already two Female Lifeguards working in that Team. So sexual abuse is the price Women have to pay for Men to do the jobs that they are possibly more physically suited to?

The distribution of Volunteers across the Sexes is fair, now. But traditionally Women put a lot more unpaid labour into building Society.

RoseWhiteTips · 04/05/2018 09:57

jnfrrss

I suspect that was only the thin edge of the wedge of their behaviour.

Not acceptable as school children visit. Would you like teachers to have mugs like that?!

Teachers DO have mugs like that.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/05/2018 09:59

Well according to the reports, some of the crew are women. The women don't seem to be the ones who have resigned in support though. Read what you like into that.

Bluelady · 04/05/2018 10:02

What a bloody ridiculous humourless world we live in.

@PotTheRed

Exactly. It's easy to gasp "Sacked over a comedy mug!!!!!!!", but the reality will probably be very different.

theeyeofthestormchaser · 04/05/2018 10:06

I think some of you neeed to read the articles on this. it' snot just about the bloody mugs!!

"Following an investigation at Whitby lifeboat station, two volunteers have been stood down. They have the right to challenge this decision and we are waiting to hear if they wish to do so. Four other people have resigned.

This is about much more than ‘saucy mugs’ but for legal reasons and given the crew members have a right of appeal it is not appropriate to say more at this time however we can confirm the investigation focussed on the production of inappropriate material of a sexual nature and associated social media activity directed at an RNLI staff member.

We are aware of speculation about the issue on social media but we want to stress that this was not a trivial matter.

The lifeboat station should be an environment where people can expect to be treated with dignity and respect. We cannot allow bullying, harassment or discrimination in what should be a safe and inclusive environment and there will be serious consequences for anybody who demonstrates this behaviour within the RNLI.

By challenging this behaviour, we are standing up for the thousands of volunteers who are committed to doing the right thing as they operate our 238 lifeboat stations, saving lives at sea around the clock, 365 days of the year. Our dedicated volunteers represent the values and principles of our organisation and we will not allow any behaviour that brings the work of the RNLI and our people into disrepute.

We can confirm that the images of the mugs in many of the media articles is not a true representation of what was produced."

TinklyLittleLaugh · 04/05/2018 10:07

Bluelady. It seems pretty evident that these men were slagging their female manager on social media. Not sure where the humour is in that.

Unless you think it's laughable that women should ever be in positions of authority over men.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 04/05/2018 10:11

I can't imagine this is a decision that was taken lightly. I very much doubt that the mugs were the worst part of what happened.
Presumably the RNLI would have taken legal advice and made sure of it's legal position.

channingtatumspecs · 04/05/2018 10:39

@Rufustheyawningreindeer "I don't believe that anyone was sacked for having an inappropriate mug" really? I totally believe it !! Are u suggesting they were actually secret rapists / paedophiles and the mug story is simply a cover up?

Dyrne · 04/05/2018 10:53

Channing - have you actually read the rest of the thread?!? They were clearly disciplined for bullying an RNLI manager - the mugs really were just the tip of the iceberg!

I think the comments on this thread are exactly why women have found it so hard in the emergency services and armed forces. Bad behaviour should never be excused because “they save lives”. Yes, those sorts of roles tend to have a “robust” sense of humour, but in my experience, decent men are always happy to be told they’ve crossed a line, and adjust behaviour around you accordingly.

Juells · 04/05/2018 10:57

@Dyrne

I think the comments on this thread are exactly why women have found it so hard in the emergency services and armed forces.

Or anywhere, really. The expectation by some women that other women should just accept abusive behaviour, and if they don't they have no sense of humour.

Dyrne · 04/05/2018 11:04

@Juells very true, it happens everywhere. The amount of things that get excused as ‘just banter’ is appalling. If any person is made to feel uncomfortable by discussion in a professional environment, that is unacceptable in my view (and yes, that applies to women making men uncomfortable as well for the “whatabouters”).

The80sweregreat · 04/05/2018 11:06

Works has gone mad. We don’t know the full story admittedly but a mug doesn't hurt anyone!

QuestioningStuffBanana · 04/05/2018 11:35

It clearly wasn't just about the mugs so I don't understand why people are reacting as if it was.
