To think well done for the RNLI for sacking people with naked women mugs

Totally not acceptable to have naked women mugs at work! I applaud them. Nick Ferrari is raising my blood pressure minimising such behaviour.

I've never worked anywhere where naked women imagery is acceptable, even if they are covering their modesty

Right decision by RNLI. The reason given is that it’s a safeguarding risk when school children visit. Which is absolutely correct.

I’ll also add in that the objectification of women would have been another valid reason.

Juells · 04/05/2018 09:15

@Postiest

I wonder if all the female staff were sacked for this... "As a I turned the corner, the first assistant director had all the female crew members assembled waving five-dollar notes.”

Why should they be? Do you think any of the female staff were in a position to refuse 'the first assistant director's' directions?

Idontdowindows · 04/05/2018 09:15

I'm very surprised at the "so what's a bit of misogyny and objectification of women if these people save lives?".

It's not a trade-off. We don't actually have to allow misogyny in order to get people to do other good stuff.

It's time this culture of sexism ended. There will be others who will be happy to save lives without being sexist mugs.

AnnPerkins · 04/05/2018 09:18

This is from the RNLI statement:

We are aware of speculation about the issue on social media but we want to stress that this was not a trivial matter.

and

We can confirm that the images of the mugs in many of the media articles are not a true representation of what was produced.

So it's impossible to comment, not knowing all the facts.

pigmcpigface · 04/05/2018 09:20

They weren't really naked women mugs- they were certainly not in the spirit of the old-fashioned oily garage where you pulled up your car for an MOT to be greeted with a picture of Pam Fox with her jugs out! (Which I would be the first to condemn as completely unacceptable). They had put their (male) heads onto the bodies of the women - it looked comical and silly, not at all titillating or laddish. If anything, it was more gender-bending than anything.

A naked woman on a cup is not misogyny. HTH

Postiest · 04/05/2018 09:21

Do you think any of the female staff were in a position to refuse 'the first assistant director's' directions?

Sexual harrasment is fine as long as your boss tells you to do it? Ok.

pigmcpigface · 04/05/2018 09:21

I should have RTFT before posting. If the images I've seen in papers aren't a real reflection of the problem, then I can understand this decision. I couldn't on the basis of what has been printed, but I wouldn't trust the media to give a fair and accurate representation on this type of story.

Finderscrispy · 04/05/2018 09:22

Total over reaction and unnecessary. It’s just a naked women’s body with mans head superimposed, hardly pornographic, found in a cupboard.

I doubt they’d have the mugs out when kids where on board because they’d be working and not drinking tea and I’m sure if that kids have 1. Seen a naked image of a women’s body before ( tv, advertising and in much more sexualised ways) 2. Would find it funny - silly mans head on women’s body.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 04/05/2018 09:22

So it's impossible to comment, not knowing all the facts

Unfortunately true

I don't believe that anyone was sacked for having an inappropriate mug

How the hell would

I arrived at work with the mug and was sacked immediately

Go down in an employment tribunal

There must be something more to it

Idontdowindows · 04/05/2018 09:23

A naked woman on a cup is not misogyny. HTH

Now I've heard everything.

Birdsgottafly · 04/05/2018 09:23

They wasn't sacked because of the Mugs, there was more to it. From one article;
"“The investigation focused on the production of inappropriate material of a sexual nature and social media activity directed at an RNLI staff member. This was not a trivial matter.”"

Some of the comments on here show how Men in powerful and 'worthy' postilions have got away with creating a Sexist Culture. Because what they do is seen much more important than having Banter without the silly little Women, making a fuss.

The fact that they didn't accept that they were inappropriate, in a place that Children visit and tried to bully and Intimidate the Female Manager that asked them to get rid of them, using sexist insults that you'd expect on the Daily mail site, tells a different story.

gameNight · 04/05/2018 09:25

@Idontdowindows

Not everything. I don't think you've heard a definition of misogyny.

systemlakeland · 04/05/2018 09:25

All those famous paintings and sculptures of naked women. Their creators were all misogynists of course, every last one of them Hmm

Juells · 04/05/2018 09:26

This is about much more than ‘saucy mugs’ but for legal reasons and given the crew members have a right of appeal it is not appropriate to say more at this time however we can confirm the investigation focussed on the production of inappropriate material of a sexual nature and associated social media activity directed at an RNLI staff member.

Directed at an RNLI staff member. So it's not just saucy mugs. If it was sexual harrassment the RNLI wouldn't have a choice, surely, to protect a member of its staff from bullying? Otherwise they'd lay themselves open to being sued.

Joanna57 · 04/05/2018 09:28

pigface

Sam Fox. Not Pam Fox.

Misses whole point of thread. Misogyny? Seriously?

I must hate men then......love my mug with a penis for a handle.

yorkshireyummymummy · 04/05/2018 09:28

Yes, I’m sure that when somebody is drowning because there were not enough volunteer men to cover shifts they will think to themselves it was worth it so as to not offend the PC brigade/frighten children with a picture of a naked woman on a mug/made some innapropriate comments on social media.
Christ! PC insanity cannot take away who we are no matter how hard it tries. When you get a group of men together ( especially l imagine in potentially life threatening situations) they will often make crude comments about women. Just as when you get a bunch of women together they will make equally crude, sexist, stereotypical type comments about men. Stereotypes exsist for a reason.

I think it’s awful these brave men have been sacked. Spoken to and reprimanded -yes. Get rid of the mugs and not repeat whatever other things they have done - yes, But sacked,.......hell no.

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 04/05/2018 09:29

Would you like teachers to have mugs like that?!

They can have what they like in their staff room....

Joanna57 · 04/05/2018 09:29

Juells

Sounds like a female volunteer got a tad offended then.

Yawn.

Juells · 04/05/2018 09:30

@Birdsgottafly
Men in powerful and 'worthy' postilions
Autocorrect is so bizarre! In what universe is 'postilions' likely to be what you want to type, rather than 'positions'? 😂

Missingstreetlife · 04/05/2018 09:30

Maybe not every last one, but plenty were, you can read some artists biogrophies, or just extrapolate from the general population

Joanna57 · 04/05/2018 09:31

Well said yorkshiremum

Everanewbie · 04/05/2018 09:31

Thanks for updating. Based on RNLI's statement there is obviously more to it. If purely about the mugs then it is plainly ridiculous. But bullying etc. is a different matter.

IIIustriousIyIllogical · 04/05/2018 09:31

It's a good opportunity for women to step up to the mark, volunteer & show them how it's done!

Be a shame to waste the opportunity now they've got rid of the misogynists.
