To think SIL is acting up

She's coming to stay for a night this weekend. She always makes a big deal over she's addicted to coffee. Every morning she'll act as if she can't function, think, drive or do anything without a coffee.

Aibu to think it's just an act?

She will refuse alright instant or French press stuff but yet a Costa machine from a garage 15 mins walk away is fine. She always makes me feel guilty about not having a coffee machine and says ridiculous things like "I'll need to get a taxi to the garage".

She's not an addict right? I've worked in a and e and acaholics used to eat the hand wash so I don't see a real dependency with her as she refuses any coffee I have in the house.

The champagne thing is really annoying too.

Goldmonday · 03/05/2018 13:13

I am obsessive about coffee, have about 4 cups of black coffee before mid day.

I will take it any way, instant, French press, IV...

She's being an attention seeker. Just like those people who order a double chocolate mocha Frappuccino or whatever and instagram it with "need my coffee lol can't function"

Goldmonday · 03/05/2018 13:14

Please offer to do the drive to costa for her and bring her back a decaf

UnicornRainbowColours · 03/05/2018 13:16

I doubt it’s an act. I need my Nespresso first thing in a Morning and instant really doesn’t cut it...

UnicornRainbowColours · 03/05/2018 13:17

Mind you actually if I was staying in someone’s house I wouldn’t be so rude and actually she sounds rude..I would suck it up and drink what I was offered.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2018 13:20

She’s just being an attention seeker, nobody really needs coffee to function. Now tea, on the other hand...Grin

midnightmisssuki · 03/05/2018 13:29

I know people like this. It’s SO irritating. I don’t know why but they think it’s so cool to say ‘OMG - can’t function without coffee #coffeeaddict’

I don’t know anyone with a true addiction to coffee - my husband has two cups a day and it’s strong stuff but he can be ‘normal’ if he doesn’t have them. Envy

Lizzie48 · 03/05/2018 13:40

I don't like coffee, but I can't wake up properly in the morning without a cup of tea, which my DH always brings me. It's obviously the caffeine, as decaf tea does nothing for me. So I guess I am addicted.

I wouldn't make a fuss, though, if I couldn't have one. I've been to places overseas where it's not possible to have a cup of tea (apart from Lipton or fruit teas) and I just kept my mouth shut.

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2018 13:46

So did you just not wake up properly that day

StrangeLookingParasite · 03/05/2018 13:57

If she's was an addict she would c be shaking like crazy and her head would be aching too much for her to think about coffee.

Errrr, I am addicted to caffeine in my own small way, and while the headaches are true, I don't think it extends to the shakes? Are you thinking of class A drugs?
I'm addicted only to the point that a cup of instant is just fine if I have one of those headaches; I really don't care. My favourite thing is a stove top percolater mcdoover, which I prefer over the nifty but very wasteful super-popular capsule machines.

MiddleMoffat · 03/05/2018 14:01

Well if she manages a 15 minute walk to get the coffee then she's functioning without coffee. Confused

Roussette · 03/05/2018 14:10

Since when has a cafetiere been known as a french press?! misses the point entirely

What sort of machine does she expect you to have? I'm v puzzled by all of this because what goes into a cafetiere is 'proper' coffee so what is it she wants?
Nespresso? Aeropress coffee? Filter? or coffee from those bean to cup fancy pants Francis machines.
Plus, does she drink espresso or is she just a milky mundane costa drinker...

Hissy · 03/05/2018 14:27

erm... why are you even having her stay there?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 03/05/2018 14:32

I was wondering that about cafetière vs french press about six months ago Roussette. I think there was a memo that you and I both missed.

ArtBrut · 03/05/2018 15:18

Since when has a cafetiere been known as a french press?!

I think it's just the American name for a cafetiére...?

Roussette · 03/05/2018 15:41

I have never ever heard of the words 'french press'. I imagined it was some sort of french toasted sandwhich Grin

Now, aeropress yes... an aeropress does great coffee and it costs little to buy.

ArtBrut · 03/05/2018 15:57

Wiki:
The French press goes by various names around the world. In Italy the press is known as a caffettiera a stantuffo. In New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa the apparatus is known as a coffee plunger, and coffee brewed in it as plunger coffee. Its French name is cafetière à piston, though French speakers also use genericized trademarks, notably Melior or Bodum. In the UK and the Netherlands the device is known as a cafetière, the French word for coffee maker or pot. In the United States and Canada, it is known as a French press or coffee press.

TomRavenscroft · 03/05/2018 16:01

I've always called it a cafetière but have heard the phrase French press quite a lot recently.

I think it sounds vaguely dirty (as does pretty much anything starting with 'French' Grin)

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/05/2018 16:05

She’s not very bright if she doesn’t understand that anything called champagne has to be the real McCoy. Admittedly there are champagnes I like more then others. But it is in very rude to turn your nose up at your hosts perfectly acceptable drinks.

Okaynowimconfused · 03/05/2018 16:11

If she really couldn't start the day without it then she would accept what you have instead of walking to the nearest coffee shop.

I always start my day with a coffee. It's the first thing I do and I do feel strange without one. Although sometines I wonder if it's psychological.

Or perhaps an addiction if not having one affects you badly.

jnfrrss · 03/05/2018 16:48

Oh she knows it's champagne, but unless it's one from a big champagne house she will turn her nose up at it. Regards of the taste she will convince herself that a big brand that's more expensive tastes better than a Lidl version.

Lol why not just get dressed and go have some nice coffee somewhere. Nero's is much better.
