Does everyone do this as part of general cleaning? I had no idea and have been bellowing at kids for sticky fingers for months!!

A lot of modern paint is wipeable for this reason!

Shaboohshoobah1 · 03/05/2018 08:56

I didn’t need to til I had kids and a dog and they started to get dirty. I don’t do them in our bedroom, as that’s fine, but the living room, hallways, dining room etc definitely need doing these days Angry

KirstenRaymonde · 03/05/2018 08:57

No I’ve never done it, but I don’t have kids yet.

e1y1 · 03/05/2018 09:09

Yes, I wipe down walls as part of general cleaning, not everyday cleaning of course, but usually within a week.

e1y1 · 03/05/2018 09:11

the week

MrsMollyMooMoo · 03/05/2018 09:11

I do it now, never used to. DS seems to use the walls to help him up the stairs. They get quite filthy. I only clean the marks though, not the full wall

Aprilmightbemynewname · 03/05/2018 09:16

Huggies wipes do a fab job on walls /doors!!

fruityb · 03/05/2018 09:19

I do it if there are marks around light switches but it’s not a general thing for me.

Zoflorabore · 03/05/2018 09:20

I do this and it makes such a difference.

I have used the magic sponges but get just as good a result with washing up liquid and water.

I do it somewhere in the house at least daily but most of the house is painted white. Scrub that, all of the house is painted white.

SoyDora · 03/05/2018 09:22

I do in the kitchen as food gets splashed up walls. The DC are only allowed to eat in the kitchen or dining room so don’t tend to get sticky fingers anywhere else. I wipe mud splashes from the utility room and hall walls.

QueenofSerene · 03/05/2018 09:24

I only do it if there’s a mark from my daughter smearing her dinner or once when a new lounge of mine left a greyish line across the wall, never as a routine cleaning tactic though.

Nikephorus · 03/05/2018 09:24

I wipe grubby marks off and I'm actually a really thorough cleaner but I'd draw the line at wiping down the walls weekly (or at all). That's what decorating is for, so you can cover over any random speck of dust. Besides, dust won't settle because it's not horizontal and if the marks aren't noticeable enough to annoy me enough to wipe them off then quite frankly they can stay there.

ProzacAndWine · 03/05/2018 09:28

I do, but not exactly often. Mostly just bash them with a duster occasionally, but wipe them if needed. Especially in the bathroom. I think the walls get a bit damp from steam and dust etc sticks to it.

PlumsGalore · 03/05/2018 09:31

I wipe them down where there are finger prints in all rooms, and a couple of times a year I wash all the kitchen walls down and cupboards and top of cupboards from the ceiling to the floor.

morningconstitutional2017 · 03/05/2018 09:36

I don't do much wiping down of walls unless I've had a specific accident and can see a strange stain - but then I'm a lazy bugger. If I see a cobweb I go after it with a feather duster. Life's too short.

None of life's misfortunes which have happened to me have been caused by dirty walls.

AskAuntLydia · 03/05/2018 09:37

I have realised that this why other people's houses look clean and bright and less unkempt than mine.

I'm not sure I can make the commitment.

Mookatron · 03/05/2018 09:38

People do all sorts of things OP. Doesn't mean you have to.

Elendon · 03/05/2018 09:38

I wipe down my kitchen once a week,,clean surfaces twice a day, and I'm not the tidiest person in the world either. I do it on the basis that I wouldn't eat in a restaurant or cafe where hygiene in food prep wasn't a priority.

PositivelyPERF · 03/05/2018 09:40

But if I wipe off the marks, then that part of the wall will be clean, which will show up the thin layer of dust on the rest of the walls! proud slattern

PretABoire · 03/05/2018 09:41

But what do you do when the paint ISN'T wipeable? I rent, and have tried wiping the walls, but the (white) paint just rubs off onto the sponge/wipe and there seems to be a nasty yellowy-cream paint underneath, so the areas I wipe just end up looking patchy and even worse than when I started.

Any tips?!

Petalflowers · 03/05/2018 09:44

Another splattern here.

If I see a dirty handprint or mark, then I may wipe it off, but not wash them on a regular basis.

Shmithecat · 03/05/2018 09:46

I do it every few days but I have a toddler and 5 cats. I use either dettol wipes or good old sugar soap.

Carboholic · 03/05/2018 09:48

Hahahaha, wiping down walls every week???? How much time do you think I have??

We did get wipable paint, but only did 2 things woth it so far: removed the tomato stains in the kitchen (DH) and the crayon stains in the living room (DS).

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 03/05/2018 09:50

Kitchen and bathroom walls get washed at least a couple of time a years, quick wipe more or less daily in between.

Cleaning and/or repainting every 2 or 3 years max everywhere else. If wiping down the wall was leaving mark, I would just sugar soap them and repaint them with cleanable paint.
