Does everyone do this as part of general cleaning? I had no idea and have been bellowing at kids for sticky fingers for months!!

Wipe off marks, yes. Wipe down whole walls? Nope nope nope.

I don't understand this obsession with cleaning and washing - who are we trying to impress? Or are 'we' trying to create a sterile world? If someone comes to my house and spots the unbleached skirting boards, do I care? Do they care? If I wear a pair of jeans for more than 3 days, who cares?

I hoover when the floor needs it. I wipe the cooking surfaces, but only with washing up water - not bleach unless I've spilled chicken juices or summat like on it.

Why do it? I really don't understand. Walls are walls. Bedding is bedding - in the old days, mattresses used to be made out of horsehair; whole ecosystems would live in them. Sheets would be washed when dirty - actually dirty. In the 1600s, the blankets would be stored on a shelf in the latrine, where the smell would kill fleas!

We really don't need to be so clean. And we really don't need to do it to impress. Anyone who judges me will not be invited back.

@elisenbrunnen 🙌

You just said everything I wish I could have put together! Cleaning walls is a whole new one on me. It’s the same as me not actually caring about how the rim of my toilet looks. Unless you stick your hand up there it’s not a problem lol.

CottonSock · 03/05/2018 20:16

Tried once, it took the paint off.. which I still have not patched

BrazzleDazzleDay · 03/05/2018 20:22

I do my living room and stairs weekly, mainly because we don't have a bannister so the dc touch the walls while going up and down the stairs.

Use a microfiber window squeegee thingy Grin

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 04/05/2018 17:34

After two weeks of family member visiting outpaitents every day, a Bright Spark who is the most untidy person I have ever met said to me "I will help you with Spring Cleaning, there's dust everywhere." I'm furious.
I am always wiping up dust. No one else does it.EVER. I do this every week or so - not daily, life is TOO short. I use baby wipes to wipe the banisters, top of door frames and pictures and the stairs skirting boards. Magic sponges sparingly on walls, a microfibre cloth would do just as well I think. Often when I do this I regard it as a fruitless task as it just makes me think that everything needs a good repaint, but there's hardly any time for that and I can't afford to hire someone, so microfiber it is.
. Curiously we never had any insect incursions when we lived near central London, now we are further out and near fields the windows fill up with cobwebs, which gives me the creeps. I hate cleaning them. They block the hoover (my preferred option) so this weekend I am giving the Bright Spark a broom handle with old sock tied to it so all the spider stuff can fall into their hair!!!! and serve them right!!!

Coralcolouredchrome · 04/05/2018 17:55

I only wipe the walls if I see any dirty marks.

Gottagetmoving · 04/05/2018 18:07

I dust walls now with a fluffy duster. I didn't used to but I saw a difference when I did!
I only wipe the walls if there are marks on them.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 04/05/2018 18:07

I do it when it gets really filthy and noticeable. Usually realise when I'm sitting down at child's level and am suddenly aware of just how bad it's become! Never, ever needed to wash the walls before I had children. Grin

Loonoon · 04/05/2018 18:10

I hardly ever do this. I would only wipe a wall if I saw a mark which happens once in a blue moon, certainly not as frequently as once a year. . When we had cats it was a little more often as they might rub against the wall and leave a residue but still not a regular thing.

FASH84 · 04/05/2018 18:11

I don't other than in the kitchen near the bin, DH has a teabag dripping/flicking issue but we don't have kids

ALongHardWinter · 04/05/2018 18:19

I wish I had the energy and the strength to this! I had a Hmm moment a few months ago when my DD told me that her MIL cleaned her bathroom tile grouting with an old toothbrush dipped in bleach. Regularly,I tell you, regularly! I've never actually thought my grouting was grubby enough to require scrubbing with bleach.

CMOTDibbler · 04/05/2018 18:21

I wipe down a wall if it is properly dirty - so once a year in the hall and dining room (dogs go out through the dining room), never elsewhere. Skirting boards get cleaned just before they are painted

Roversandrhodes · 04/05/2018 18:23

I have never done it unless there’s an obvious dirty mark on the wall then of course I’ll clean it off.I first heard of it when renting and on the list of cleaning expectations on check out it listed ‘wash down walls’ .I didn’t do it .Its weird

Gwenhwyfar · 04/05/2018 18:29

"But what do you do when the paint ISN'T wipeable? I rent, and have tried wiping the walls, but the (white) paint just rubs off onto the sponge/wipe"

Same here. I think the landlord would let me paint over, but to be honest, I don't care that much. The worst wall was already dirty when I moved in.

People who wipe down the walls, the whole wall or just dirty spots?

8oOoOoOo8 · 04/05/2018 18:54

Re the immune system, we tend to choose when it suits...

There's also evidence that the rise of allergies is also due to us not being full of worms... we have evolved, not to have worms, but to survive while having them. Worms suppress the immune system. By removing them, the immune system is not suppressed and allows allergies to rise.

Anyone fancy being infested with worms?

Anonmcnon · 04/05/2018 19:07

Oh my goodness, no way, ever! As if there’s not already enough to do!!! Seriously who the fuck has time for this?

Anonmcnon · 04/05/2018 19:08

Also great about the worms, mine always have them at least once a year 🙄

TypingoftheDead · 04/05/2018 19:10

I don't have children but do wipe the walls down at work, since they get food and medicines etc accidentally splashed on them quite often. Sadly not all of it is wipe able paint! I think the handyman touches up the scrubbed patches though.

babyno5 · 04/05/2018 19:32

This is one of the reasons I don’t like being a grown up! I don’t EVER recall my mum doing it but with 6 kids, dog and cat it’s all I ever do when I’m not at work! They are all grubby creatures 😂😂

fascinated · 04/05/2018 19:39

We don't wipe walls.
We taught children to sit down when eating and wash hands afterwards.
Life is too short for this kind of activity.

^This

My mind boggles
I don’t know ANYBODY who wipes walls
That’s what hand washing is for

fascinated · 04/05/2018 19:43

Hoovering walls???!!! I cannot believe this stuff

Ansumpasty · 04/05/2018 19:46

I magic eraser the walls once a week. It’s actually pretty satisfying!

bluerunningshoes · 04/05/2018 19:46

only if there are marks.

cheval · 04/05/2018 20:23

As Joan Rivers once said: I hate housework. Cleaned the whole place, and six months later it needed doing again.

Spaghettihead1 · 04/05/2018 20:54

2-3 times a year I hoover my walls.
I’ve heard passers-by laughing and commenting when they’ve seen me at it in the dining room ha!
