Why would young people never have heard any one particular song? Confused

gwincath · 03/05/2018 00:43

@lavendargreen it's probably just my kids that have no interest in my era of music Hmm

I know where you're coming from OP. Enjoy the nostalgia

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2018 08:04

Simple minds were good , back in the day.

unless you listen to an 80s type radio station i doubt you would hear it , but its probably on spotify.

my two like all kinds of music, but never heard this track even though ds2 loves 70s music and Disco, he isnt keen on 80s!

Aprilmightbemynewname · 03/05/2018 08:07

I heard Alison Moyet's 'Invisible' on the radio yesterday. Mustn't have heard it for 30 odd years and still knew the words!!

WhatdoImean · 03/05/2018 08:09

"Vienna" by Ultravox, especially when see with the video.

A classic! (Well... I think so :-) )

WhatdoImean · 03/05/2018 08:09

Seen!!

speakout · 03/05/2018 08:10

I don't feel sorry for them.

There is some amazing music around right now.
I had so little access to music as a teenager.

I love all the female vocalists around- ans Sia is just amazing.

I feel sorry for my younger self.

Music was very male dominated when I was growing up, even the Prog Rock bands - which I loved- were menz music created by men.
There were a few shining lights like Kate Bush and Chrissie Hynd, but that was limited.

liquidrevolution · 03/05/2018 08:33

We all stand together by Paul McCartney and the frog chorus.

Understated classic imo.

gwincath · 03/05/2018 08:35

Bom Bom Bom!! Ah great video!!

Biffsboys · 03/05/2018 09:25

I was driving with my ds(15) when he said- why do you listen to all that country music ? It was Simple Minds Shock

Aprilmightbemynewname · 03/05/2018 09:29

Ds 9 complains about my old music on but his favourite is Dr Hook!!

SmellsLikeMiddleAgeSpirit · 03/05/2018 09:32

Oh my! Someone Somewhere in the Summertime does something strange to me, something so haunting about it!

I'm off to listen to an 80's compilation!

gwincath · 03/05/2018 09:32

Ghost Town by The Specials
I don't even like that kind of music, but that song was seminal.

(My children know it, we've played them lots of essential listening. DS is a huge 80s music fan... oops)

StealthPolarBear · 03/05/2018 09:39

I love Belfast child

MrsDilber · 03/05/2018 09:45

They don't have the charts like we did, a simple chart. Back in the 80's, you'd watch Top of the Pops in a Thursday and be chatting about who was on at school. Smash Hits might give you the lyrics to a few songs and some posters. A physical single would cost £1.25 and an album £4.99.

The music all sounds the same today.

Right, I'm gonna slope back to the granny cave...

Corneliusmurphy · 03/05/2018 09:48

I used to love smash hits!! But I had very different taste to my friends so not much discussion.

I have absolute radio on all the time and dp has magic or heart so my kids have probably heard most of these (not the frog song tbf...)

MycatsaPirate · 03/05/2018 09:51

My 12 yo DD has nicked my Adam and the Ants CD. I should be proud of her love of 80's music but I need that CD in my car!

She also knows all the words to Little Birdhouse in your Soul. One of my absolute favourites.

Our local radio station does a throwback on a Sunday evening and we are always driving back from lifeguard training when it's on. This week Bananarama came on and it was Nah Nah Hey Hey Goodbye and she kept shouting fucking Bingo from that bloody advert. Ruined it!!

The 80's produced some incredible music. Horrendous hair styles but iconic none the less.

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2018 09:59

I was chatting to some year 5 children in the playground yesterday at work and they were talking about music, so i asked them 'what is number 1 at the moment?' blank faces all round. it was funny.

its all collaborations these days i am told, although i did know who Avicii was when i heard about him dying the other day, so some of the latest music seems to filter through a bit to my old brain. My eldest goes to see some strange bands - Skindread the other day the XX last year. Nothing you would hear on radio 2!

Hey don't forget about listening to the top 40 on Sundays and taping your favourites songs from there as well MrsDilber!
I agree that pop music used to be a far more communal thing, a much more shared experience.

I'm 49 now and would love to find some new music that I'd like. I have no idea where to look.

Gromance02 · 03/05/2018 10:19

Young uns today have far easier access to old music than we did back in the day so there's really no excuse. There's loads of music I love that was out before I was born and I'm in my 40's. Most of today's music is shit and it's not just because of my age that I say that....It is true!

BringOnTheScience · 03/05/2018 10:25

DC1 is currently writing an essay about punk & politics in the 1970s for their IB History. Excellent excuse for some very loud homework! Grin

I'm really enjoying having teens and their music tastes. It's fab having an excuse to go to festivals and gigs.

The80sweregreat · 03/05/2018 14:50

I think that Punk was a huge con, most of them were privately educated or from middle class homes and the hangers on , such as Vivienne westwood for example, were also rich who thought it would be a bit of a laugh to pretend to be anarchists and anti establishment. The great rock n roll swindle indeed! Sid Vicious was just down right nasty. luckily the whole movement didnt last that long, even if some musicians call ' never mind the bollocks' a masterpiece, their one and only album!
I had to go out to buy albums and could happily spend my saturday afternoons browsing Down town records or HMV if i went up london.
They have it all at their fingertips these days.
