AIMBU to complain to the nursery for broken buggy

At our nursery we have a buggy cupboard.
It is havoc in there. People are careless and inconsiderate.
Today after digging my buggy out of there when I put my son in I discovered it was broken, unsafe to use as one side of the back of the chair has snapped of, if the other side where to break he'd go flying.
My son hasn't learnt to walk yet so there's no way I can walk either so I don't know what I'm going to do for the rest of the week as I'm not able to get a new one, let alone think of the costs of replacing it.

Yes, complain

LoudestRoar · 02/05/2018 18:21

You can try, but our old nursery was a 'leave it at your own risk' place.

bloomsburyer · 02/05/2018 18:23

I'd guess it's likely to be items are left at your own risk. That's the case at the nursery we're going to use. Best to check that before complaining.

thethoughtfox · 02/05/2018 18:24

I would imagine it's car park rules: leave at your own risk. The nursery didn't break it and they don't provide a supervised pram service.

Bombardier25966 · 02/05/2018 18:25

Is the nursery at fault, or is it another parent?

thethoughtfox · 02/05/2018 18:25

If you were able to successfully claim because they didn't have a sign up or whatever, they will just stop you and everyone else leaving their prams there.

Enidblyton1 · 02/05/2018 18:26

I think it's just one of the risks you take, leaving a buggy in a cupboard with other buggies. Mention it to the nursery, but I doubt they can/will do anything about it.

jedediah · 02/05/2018 18:27

Sounds like a leave at your own risk thing. It wasn't the nursery that broke it, it was other parents.

You're not going to get anywhere complaining to the nursery. It's not their fault.

Jamhandprints · 02/05/2018 18:28

That's awful but I doubt if the nursery will accept responsibility. Do you have a local facebook page for buying second hand pushchairs? I have bought second hand ones for £20 and they have been fine. I hope you sort something out.

Ginmakesitallok · 02/05/2018 18:31

I assume today wasn't the first time you had to dig your buggy out? In which case you knew when you left it that other folk were careless and inconsiderate, you knew the risk of it being broken and still chose to leave it. Yabu

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 02/05/2018 18:31

Under warranty?? Ooh this has snapped. Surely this shouldn't happen... I would.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 02/05/2018 18:33

If someone complained to me I’d just stop everyone leaving their buggies there. They don’t have to let you.

PotteringAlong · 02/05/2018 18:35

By all means complain and no one will ever be allowed to leave their buggy their again. Or maybe they could reduce the size of the children’s play areas to make a bigger and safer buggy store?

xcxcsophiexcxc · 02/05/2018 18:38

Very stressful as I'm a single mum, I've gone back to work but I'm not even making a profit after the costs of travel and childcare. So for it to cost me money to replace essential items like a buggy is pretty devastating.

You can very easily get a secondhand buggy on Gumtree or your local FB, if money for a new one is an issue.

I wouldn't expect any recompense from the nursery, but would ask them to include a polite notice in their next newsletter to parents, requesting that all parents be careful and respectful when using the buggy cupboard, as otherwise the facility will have to be stopped.

Dieu · 02/05/2018 18:40

I agree that is highly annoying and inconsiderate though!

Sirzy · 02/05/2018 18:40

Unfortunately it will be very much a case of “left at your own risk” I would imagine.
The trouble they cause is probably why so many won’t peovide any storage

TroubledLichen · 02/05/2018 18:45

I would complain in the hope that they sort out the storage/make people fold/generally be a bit more considerate. But there’s no way you’ll get any sort of compensation if that’s what you’re after. It will be a leave at your own risk thing, like Tesco wouldn’t be liable if someone hit your car whilst it was parked. Have a look on Facebook selling pages for a cheap umbrella stroller to tide you over and contact the manufacturer of yours to see if it can be repaired.

xcxcsophiexcxc · 02/05/2018 18:49

TBH I havnt seen a sign about leaving it at your own risk though I've read other posters about childcare etc outside the room but I'd need to check again to be sure.
but its an expensive nursery next to the station , the location is ideal for those walking and I feel like they should take more of a charge with it but need to look in to it more. I don't really feel it's too much to ask for staff to take order of the buggy room when paying high rates for nursery. I don't want to leave my buggy there but when my sons so young and I'm stretched thin as it is as I'm on my own and I'm trying to do my best by getting back in to work at a loss just to avoid being out of work and relying on state hand outs something like this is quite upsetting and frustrating. At the end of the day I'm paying a lot for this service.

TryingToForgeAnewLife · 02/05/2018 18:53

Maybe the nursery could compromise and loan you one of theirs in the meantime?

Sirzy · 02/05/2018 18:58

I think expecting the staff to take responsibility for it is expecting a lot! They are there to look after the children not the prams.

PotteringAlong · 02/05/2018 19:00

At the end of the day I'm paying a lot for this service.

But you’re paying them to look after your child, not your buggy.

Pengggwn · 02/05/2018 19:00

Sorry, OP, but I think unless they need your buggy during the day, you are leaving it for your convenience. I really don't see why they should take responsibility and I honestly don't believe they will. Sorry it is ruined, though.

MorningsEleven · 02/05/2018 19:04

I'd be livid but it's not the nursery's fault that some ratbag has broken your buggy.

Greggers2017 · 02/05/2018 19:07

OP, are you claiming the right benefits? Child tax credits pays up to 70% of your childcare.
Also does your work do childcare vouchers for an extra saving?

Pick up a very cheap second hand one for leaving at nursery. It's lucky you can leave them, no nursery I've ever worked at/visited have let you leave them.
