AIMBU to complain to the nursery for broken buggy

At our nursery we have a buggy cupboard.
It is havoc in there. People are careless and inconsiderate.
Today after digging my buggy out of there when I put my son in I discovered it was broken, unsafe to use as one side of the back of the chair has snapped of, if the other side where to break he'd go flying.
My son hasn't learnt to walk yet so there's no way I can walk either so I don't know what I'm going to do for the rest of the week as I'm not able to get a new one, let alone think of the costs of replacing it.

Most nurseries are leave at your own risk, therefore I doubt they'll do much.
That's why I always bring our pram home as we live 15 minutes walk away. Though I understand this isn't doable for most

You can often get buggies repaired, ask at a large baby store especially if you can find an independent which sells buggies.

Other than that yes try warranty. I think unfortunately it's not the nursery's responsibility.

Where I used to work it had very clear signage that items were left at owners risk and nursery would take no responsibility for theft or damages.
We used to have parents leave their bikes, scooters, prams, all kinds.
We did have a theft happen, but footage was passed onto police and dealt with, no recourse could be taken against the nursery.

Op I’m a lone parent. I get it- I really do. It’s hard, and you feel like you’re doing it all for nothing, but you’re not I promise you.
I have found that some people will decide to generously give away their kids prams etc when they’re no longer using them, maybe have a look on gumtree and freecycle? I don’t think you’ll get far with asking the nursery to pay- they’ll ask for proof that it was damaged as a result of their negligence- which you’ll be unable to give, and they’ll likely stop anyone using the space for prams as a result; it won’t be worth the hassle for them to generously allow space on their property to be used when it could come back against them negatively

You could ask the nursery to write an email/letter to all the parents saying that a parent's buggy has got snapped in the buggy cupboard and ask whether any parents have a buggy that is surplus to requirements that they would donate to you.

Willow2017 · 02/05/2018 19:15

Staff atent there to look after your buggy. You knew what the cupboatd was like and you still used it. At our old nursery buggies, scooters etc were left in the foyer.

Its an 'at your own risk' situation.

Are you getting help with child care through WTC or similar? Are you claiming all you are entitled to?
Try charity shops, local paper adds as well as gumtree, freecycle etc for a cheap buggy.

xcxcsophiexcxc · 02/05/2018 19:17

I have emailed them , I havnt asked for compensation and I do understand it's not their fault. I have requested that they raise awareness to be more considerate when lobbing there prams in cos honestly it just plan dangerous sometimes !

Good plan OP, hope they make some changes and you manage to get yours fixed or find a cheap replacement.

Pengggwn · 02/05/2018 19:22

I really think there will be one on Freecycle or similar. Maybe the nursery will be kind and replace it, who knows?

Callamia · 02/05/2018 19:24

Is there any possibility that the buggy is claimable on your contents insurance?

I’d definitely ask for it to be looked at by the manufacturers though. I know what buggy sheds are like, but breaking one that’s under a year old suggests a fault with the buggy.

whywontteenswearcoats · 03/05/2018 07:21

The nursery might have a buggy they could lend you until you can get a replacement or put up a sign asking if any parents could loan you one

HumpHumpWhale · 03/05/2018 07:24

I got a totally serviceable maclaren for £30 on gumtree recently. Maybe try there?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 03/05/2018 07:28

Freecycle/freegle always has pushchairs. Maybe not snazzy and posh, but usually perfectly serviceable.

bananasplits50 · 03/05/2018 07:33

Unfortunately I think you will find your wasting your time. I would be very surprised if it is not stipulated 'leave at your own risk' either within your contract, news letter or a sign at the nursery. The buggy cupboard we use is a nightmare, *parents" don't care and happily throw there buggy and scooters on top of everyone else's. Our responsibility not the nursery.....

xcxcsophiexcxc · 03/05/2018 17:05

A further update from the nursery is that they forwarded in my complaint to head office.
It seems that they've been trying to get a refurbishment for it because of the troubles they've had. The head office have no agreed to the refurbishment and have offered 50% compensation towards the cost of a new buggy that I'm extremely happy and greatful for.

Asda have strollers for £20 at the minute.

Cockmagic · 03/05/2018 17:13

You describe it as "havoc" . Why on earth would you leave your only buggy there? 🙄

You should of took it home or used a cheap spare one for in there.

AntiHop · 03/05/2018 17:20

That's great op.

bananasplits50 · 03/05/2018 20:26

That's brilliant news.....

Eryri1981 · 03/05/2018 20:35

Haven't RTFT, so don't know if this has already been suggested.

OP are you on any local parent/kid facebook page, can you put a post explaining your situation (also one to all your FB friends) round where I live someone would probably give you a spare/ no longer required pushchair for free. My mum had been gifted 2 strollers for my DD before she was even born...I'm sure someone will have something suitable, even if it isn't quite what you would choose yourself.
